2. What is Wildlife ?
 Wildlife include any animals bees,tiger,butterfly,fish;and aquatic or land
vegetation, which form a part of any habitat – Under Wildlife Conservation
Act of 1972
 Therefore, Wildlife refers to living organisms (Flora and Fauna) in their
natural habitat
 Example : Lion,Deer,Crocodiles,whales, trees and shrubs in dense forests

 It is been since traditional days animals are been hunted
 Major cause of animal species extinction
 Poaching and illegal trade in animals are US$2 billion to $3 billion
 Endangered species around the world
 To maintain Ecological Balance

4. Role of Big Data in Wildlife Conservation
 Before the current era of data, animal conservation was conducted using
small sample sizes, leading to predictions on the whole population
 Big Data analytics now have the capacity to examine unbelievably large data
sets, with the aim of identifying patterns and correlations
 This techniques are infinitely faster and more efficient than traditional
manual methods with a similar degree of accuracy

 Big Data analytics optimizes the power of social media data, emails, survey
responses, mobile data, cameras, sensors attached to animals etc.
 For example, sensors work to identify when an animal is killed through illegal
poaching.
 In addition to this, the criminals are identified through cameras. Not only
does this help to capture those responsible, but also it dissuades further
poaching as hunters have greater fear

where Big Data has come up as “Gift Of GOD” in saving
the wildlife..

10. 1. The Great Elephant Census
 In Africa, there are almost more than 12000 elephants killed since 2006
 This has led to depletion of Elephant Population across the globe
 To solve this, in 2014 survey named “The Great Elephant Census” was launched by Microsoft Co-
founder Paul Allen
 It achieved greater understanding of number of elephants in Africa
 Further resulted in one of the largest raw data sets of its kind
 Big Data is providing a great help in this Project by maintaining the ecosystem.

11. 2. eBird
 eBird project was launched in 2002 , it is an application which records birds sighting and input
the same data in app
 This app was created mainly to have the Big data sets that can be of value to professionals and
recreational bird watchers
 Further it was used by professionals to create a “Bird cast”
 It also uses machine learning to some extent
 Benefits - more intelligence and management in land planning also allows required preparation
for areas of roosting birds gathering

 Aiming to living 3D replica of Earth to serve scientists of different disciplines
 This project has been built upon interconnected projects that use computer
science, big data and geo science among various other branches of learning
 Earthcube funds a variety of Projects helping protect our Planet.
