GOI initiatives, programs, schemes for achieving SDGs
• Agricultural development has the potential to contribute significantly to achieving the SDGs and this can be realized
with policy support and strengthening of appropriate institutions.
• An innovative study on government schemes for climate-smart agriculture finds that all the schemes taken together
can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3%, save irrigation water by 2%, lower fossil fuel and fertilizer consumption by
3% and 6% respectively and improve farm income by 8.4%.
• The government included provision of supplying nutri-cereals through Public Distribution System (PDS). The system
guarantees food security to 800 million Indians , daily-mid-day-meal offers food to 100 million school children in India.
• Several state governments also have formulated new schemes to achieve the goal of doubling farmers’ income.
• A study was conducted and all the existing schemes available in a village in Telangana were considered. It was found
that majority of the households benefit from PDS, MGNREGA, seed and fertilizer subsidy, and mid-day meal scheme.
• Bhoochetana (reviving soils) is a novel mission mode project to improve productivity of rainfed agriculture by bridging
yield gaps in Karnataka.
2. • Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar told the United Nations that the agriculture sector is key in achieving the
Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 saying 12 out of 17 SDGs are directly dependent on agriculture.
• Addressing a virtual UN Food Systems Summit, Tomar Listed out various steps taken by India towards making farming
profitable, Tomar said the government has created an Agriculture Infrastructure Fund with a corpus of Rs 1 lakh crore
and targeting formation of 10,000 farmer producer organizations besides the PM-KISAN Scheme through which an
amount of 1.37 lakh crore has been credited to the bank accounts of 11 crore farmers.
• He also said that India is conscious of its commitments towards climate change and has taken several steps to make
agriculture sustainable. The Per Drop More Crop scheme for irrigation; Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana' for organic
farming as well as the 'Soil Health Card' plan to conserve water and soil resources are some of the schemes being
implemented in this direction, he added. India has also launched the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) to
provide insurance protection for covering the risk of farmers.
• According to the UN body, sustainable food systems don't just help to end hunger but can help the world achieve critical
progress on all 17 SDGs.
