2. OPENING SEQUENCE- (01:00)
The movie begins with an establishing shot of a place. It is a shot of
a river surrounded by trees and beautiful mountains. It seems like a
tranquil place, however the music which accompanies it is very
haunting connoting that the movie belongs to the genre
horror/thriller. As the scene progresses there is a pan of the river
and then fades into a birds eye shot of a car driving close to the
river, there is tracking involved as the camera follows the direction
of the car. The area which the protagonist seems to be in seems to
be very secluded and surrounded only by trees, this could add to
the narrative of the story as it shows somebody driving towards a
place in the middle of nowhere. An enigma code which could be
used here is where is the person going?
3. OPENING SEQUENCE- (02:00)
As the shot progresses from the first minute, the camera
continues to track the car moving, however this is done from
a different angle and is a long shot. As the camera begins to
zoom into the moving vehicle, the credits of the movie start
coming down in an quick orderly manor, the font of the
writing is bright blue and all in capitals. The scene then
continues to zoom away from the car and show another shot
of the surroundings.
4. OPENING SEQUENCE- (03:00)
As the opening progresses into the 3rd minute, the credits
continue to come down rapidly and the camera is still
tracking the car’s movement, however it slowly begins to
zoom into the vehicle. Furthermore, the scene then goes into
an establishing shot of the Overlook Hotel. It goes from a
birds eye view, into a mid shot view, and a close up. The third
minute sequence ends with a title appearing with the words
The Interview, which adds on to the narrative of the story.
The creepy music continues throughout the whole three
minutes.
5. OPENING SEQUENCE- (04:00)
The opening of the next scene shows the protagonist (Jack
Torrance) played by Jack Nicholson entering the Overlook
Hotel. There is a panning long shot of him walking through
the lobby to the reception. A two-shot/slight over the
shoulder shot is then used to show Jack approaching the
receptionist and asking where he could find Mr.Ullman, the
manager of the hotel. There is digetic sound during the
course of the scene of people in the lobby chatting,
telephones ringing and people moving their luggage around.
After that there is an over the shoulder shot of the Mr.Ullman
speaking to his secretary.
6. OPENING SEQUENCE- (05:00)
As the dialogue between Jack, Mr.Ullman and the secretary
comes to an end, the scene then fades into an establishing
shot of the building where Jack and his family live. The shot
then rapidly descends to a two shot of Jack’s wife Wendy
and their son Danny having breakfast and watching
television. There is digetic sound of the show which they are
viewing. The scene then progresses as there is dialogue
between Danny and his mother speaking about moving to the
Overlook Hotel. As the opening of the movie is about to come
to an end, there is a shot-reverse-shot of Danny and his
mother speaking.
