2. Bârsana is a commune in Maramureș County, Romania. It is composed of two
villages, Bârsana and Nănești. It also included Oncești village until 2004, when it was split
off to form a separate commune. As of 2002, Bârsana had 6352 inhabitants, all but ten of
whom were ethnic Romanians.
3. Bârsana's Church of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple is one of eight
Wooden Churches of Maramureș listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After the
Romanian Revolution of 1989, another wooden monastery was built in Bârsana.
The church was built in 1720 and it features some of the most representative baroque
indoor murals in Maramureş. It has a collection of icons painted on glass and old religious
books.
It´s name refers to the Presentation of Mary.
4. The Bârsana Monastery is one of
the reference objectives in Maramures. The
beautiful church inside the ensemble of
monasteries and the rest of the wooden
buildings made by the popular craftsmen
from Maramures. Probably one of the most
beautiful monasteries you can reach, the
Barsana monarchal complex is truly a special
place, very nicely decorated that deserves all
the praise.
Is one of the highest wooden churches
in Romania, with a height of 57m.
