2. Collective Investment Schemes in Securities (Unit Trusts) are generally medium- to long-term investments and there are risks associated with investments in Unit Trusts. The value of participatory interests (units) may go down as well as up and past performance is not
necessarily a guide to the future performance. Forward pricing is used. Unit Trusts are traded at ruling prices. AFM may borrow up to 10% (ten percent) of the market value of a fund to accommodate insufficient liquidity, securities in a fund may be lent to borrowers,
income from the funds is distributed monthly, quarterly and half-yearly and may only be paid out into an account as nominated by the investor. Performance figures are from Absa Fund Managers Limited for the period ended 31 December 2014 using NAV-NAV prices
and are for lump sum investments with income distributions reinvested. Unit Trusts are financial products and not investments in insurance policies with an insurer and therefore cooling-off periods do not apply, AFM does not provide any guarantee either with respect
to the capital or the return of a fund, the directors and personnel of AFM may be invested in any of the funds, AFM holds professional indemnity cover, AFM utilizes Absa Bank Limited’s electronic and telephone banking platform. The investor understands that the legal
and tax environment is continually changing, and that AFM cannot be held responsible for any changes to the law which might have an effect on their investment, and which did not exist at the time their investment was made. The performance data source is Morningstar.
The Raging Bull Awards took place on 28 January 2015 and full details and basis of the awards are available from AFM.
Absa Fund Managers Limited (AFM) is a registered Manager and is a member of the Association for Savings & Investment SA (ASISA). Absa Asset Management (Pty) Ltd, Authorized Financial Services Provider, FSP No 522 and Absa Multi-Managers a division
of Absa Investment Management Services (Pty) Ltd, Authorized Financial Services Provider, FSP No 524 are the respective appointed investment managers.
You could say that winning three Raging Bull Awards is a fairly good measure
of success, but for us success is measured in quality outcomes for our clients.
Our investment legacy is built on funds such as the Absa Property Equity Fund,
with returns of 39,7% over one year and 26,8% per annum over three years,
and the Absa Multi-Managed Bond Fund, which had an annualised return of
10,8% over a five-year period.

Management are thrilled to see the impact Afrika
Tikkun’s ‘cradle-to-career' initiative, which invests in
the development of disadvantaged children from early
infancy through young adulthood, has had on the lives
of our underprivileged youth.
Within Absa, one of our values is stewardship, a value
very close to our hearts which keeps our company and
colleagues strongly focused on leaving things better
than we found them: one aspect being directing our
efforts to helping to build young futures. Through
our learnership and transformation programmes, we
similarly look at our disadvantaged youth with the aim
of uplifting and upskilling them. Additionally, finance
and banking plays an important role in enabling social
and economic progress, and this is something we as a
business consistently consider: the way in which our
business decisions impact on our society and how we
can further work towards solutions that have a benefit
to our communities.
Afrika Tikkun’s achievements fill us with a sense of
pride by association, and we have been particularly
moved by the positivity of your hard-working team,
as well as the impact made on the communities and
young people that have benefitted from the good work
you do.
We are very proud to be associated with Afrika Tikkun

SPONSORS MESSAGE:
4. In editing this edition of the Afrika Tikkun Times
– a bumper 20 year edition at that- I have been
struck by how much has changed. Looking back to
the first ad hoc activities undertaken in 1994, the
Afrika Tikkun of today is almost unrecognisable!
This organisation is living proof of what a handful
of hard working and extremely caring people are
able to catalyse. It has grown immensely, not just
in scope of practice, but in approach, philosophy
and effectiveness. Increasingly relevant, the
programmes and methodologies in place at Afrika
Tikkun now reflect 20 years of commitment to
sustainable development and investment in the
futures of children and youth in South Africa.
This edition brings together the recent achievements of the past year,
as well as reflections on where we have come from, by celebrating
several ‘moments in history’. This is summarised in the 20 year
reflection by our beloved chairperson, Bertie Lubner. To reflect our
20|20 vision, CEO Marc Lubner provides a forcast of what is yet to
come for Afrika Tikkun, and an overview of the stategies currently
in place. In sharing some of the impact that our core, support and
outreach programmes have had over the past two decades, we also
pay tribute to the long-standing staff members who have been
on the ground serving our children for many years. Although we
have included some specific stories about our beneficiaries that
have shone brightly over the past year, these are just the tip of the
iceberg. Since Afrika Tikkun started, tens of thousands of children
have accessed our programmes and there have been hundreds of
inspirational stories of success. Not every story can be shared, but
we hope that the descriptive statistics we have included will give
you some idea of the outcomes that have been achieved. We close
off with some information about our forthcoming ‘Like Change’
campaign, which we hope will grab your attention!
We do hope that this edition gives you some idea of what Afrika
Tikkun does on a daily basis in the communities where we work,
as well as a good picture of what the evolving Afrika Tikkun has
achieved in over 20 years of operation.
Congratulations Afrika Tikkun, and here’s to the next 20 years!

6. Over the past 20 years, Afrika Tikkun
has invested in children providing a
holistic menu of services in areas where
children and youth need a helping hand
in accessing quality social, educational,
health and nutritional support on their
journeys from ‘cradle to career’. Never
static, the organisation continues to
grow and adapt, providing programmes
that are necessary, effective and fun for
children and youth.
Recognising the moral imperatives
governing human affairs, men and
women of good will can face up to
the challenge of our time and make
the caring society a reality.
Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris
Over the past two decades Afrika Tikkun has made an
extraodinary contribution to the communities where
we work:
• Over 61 500 beneficiaries have been impacted
through Afrika Tikkun programmes since 1994.
• Our core development programmes for children
and youth, and support and outreach programmes
for families, provide direct services to about
19000 beneficiaries per year.
• Afrika Tikkun employs 556 permanent staff, 502 of
whom come from the communities we serve.
• We have 20 formal co-operation agreements
with NGO partners and Government, and work in
cooperation with countless other partners and
organisations.
• Afrika Tikkun has invested over R40 million in
building and maintaining infrastructure in the
heart of 6 communities to provide a safe place
where children thrive.
We salute the vision, heart and human kindness of
both Dr. Bertie Lubner and the late Chief Rabbi Cyril
Harris. Their vision will live on in each family that has
the opportunity to spend time with us at our Afrika
Tikkun centres of excellence

Once upon a time there were a businessman and a rabbi who shared a passion
for children. They saw the dire conditions that the children were growing up in
and they wanted to change this, so they looked to themselves to make things
better. Dr Bertie Lubner and Chief Rabbi Harris started Afrika Tikkun.n

7. Progress cannot take place without a mindset, which
incorporates change. This attitude means a better life
for all. I can safely say that in reviewing the past 20
years, through an attitude which encompassed change,
I never believed that from the early beginning of simply
caring for communities in dire need, we would today
be responsible for developing thousands of township
youth into productive, well-suited employment
opportunities. We have moved from being a “caring”
organisation into a responsible development
organisation, contributing to South Africa’s solution to
youth unemployment and breaking the cycle of poverty.
From the very beginning, our programs focused on
the development of families and children with the
following criteria:
1. AsaJewishCommunityledprogramme,werecognized
the need to involve local township communities in
the planning and implementation of programmes
that benefitted their communities.
2. The organisation had to be run on strict business
disciplines, involving reporting by management to
a board of directors as well as to all who contribute
towards our programmes and in accord with GAAP
principles. The same requirements that a sound
business would require, are to be applied to this
not-for-profit enterprise, with annual budgets,
action plans, HR standards, as well as marketing,
administration and sustainable cash flow managerial
systems employed.
3. Managerial competencies and systems are being
developed effectively over time, but we would never
losethepassionthatdrivesourpoliciesandphilosophy.

4. Our success could only develop if we retain a focus
on the core challenges we face. However, if the needs
fall outside our competencies, then we embrace other
NGOs and organisations to work side by side with us.
Early on we were blessed to receive the personal interest
and patronage of the Honourable Nelson Mandela as
Patron-in-Chief of our organisation in support of our
efforts to assist children in need. Other well-respected
patrons joined in support, including Deputy President,
Cyril Ramaphosa, the Krok twins, Eric Samson, Raymond
Ackerman, Ronnie Lubner, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Gill
Marcus, Irene Menell, Eliot Osrin, and Basil Hersov.
The current members of the Board are: Bertie Lubner,
Herby Rosenberg, Marc Lubner, Arnold Forman, Arnold
Basserabie, Moonyeen Castle, Li Boiskin, Ann Harris,
Bongani Khumalo, Rabbi David Hazdan, Russell Loubser,
Karuna Mohan, Wendy Lucas-Bull, Dolly Mokgatle.
Previous members of the Board included the late Chief
Rabbi Cyril Harris (co-founder of Afrika Tikkun), Chris
Liebenberg (former Finance Minister and Chairman of
Nedbank), and Bridget Radebe.
We have been influenced by the vision of the National
Development Plan, authorised by Trevor Manuel in 2013.
This pathway for change envisages the collaboration of all
SouthAfricans,includingpublic-privatepartnershipswhich
regrettably have been one of the few disappointments we
have encountered from many government departments
who have not participated as we had hoped. However,
our philosophy has been that we will not wait for others
to come up with solutions, but rather we will pioneer
and progress in the belief that others will follow suit
and join us as we strive for a 2020 vision that sees our
nation dynamically different than the socially embattled
environment that we witness today.
Having witnessed the success that we have had with
local communities, in partnership with corporate, and
private donors, and a few government departments, it is
my belief that, together we can build a prosperous and
productive economy that provides job opportunities for
all South Africans who are willing and wanting to work.
The Afrika Tikkun “Cradle to Career” model which has
had over 3000 people on the payroll and has, served
over 61,000 beneficiaries in 6 communities across South
Africa over the years has surely impacted our society in a
monumental way.
I pay tribute to the management, staff and shareholders
who have travelled this road with us and I thank all of
those who will carry this forward for the next 20 years
and more.
Bertie Lubner
Afrika Tikkun Chairman
They focused on the challenges that most affected children’s
lives and worked tirelessly to ensure such conditions wouldn’t
exist for any child living in South Africa in the future. They
couldn’t do all this alone so they got the community involved.

8. One day, a great man noticed the work of these two great men. This was President
Nelson Mandela. The President believed in what Dr Lubner and Rabbi Harris were
doing. He believed this was a step not only in changing children’s lives, but in changing
the country, so he volunteered to become the Chief Patron of the organisation.n
Over many an afternoon tea, the late Nelson Mandela,
spent time with Afrika Tikkun’s Bertie Lubner and
Herby Rosenberg debating the role of South Africans in
building an equal and just society. The values embodied
by these men are now ingrained in the Afrika Tikkun
culture:
Ubuntu
Commitment and passion
Professionalism Integrity and honesty
Responsibility and accountability
Human development and investment
Excellent communication
We pay tribute to your wisdom, dedication and resolve
to see a better South Africa. We will continue to fight
for the legacy you envisioned – “a democratic and free
society in which all persons live together in harmony
and with equal opportunities” the words of Nelson
Rolihlahla Mandela.
Rest In Peace: 18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013
In 1999, Madiba visited an Afrika Tikkun
project in Orange Farm. He said he had
seen a miracle and he volunteered to be
Afrika Tikkun’s Patron-in-Chief.
The Tikkun project demonstrates
in a practical and sustainable
manner what can be done by limited
resources, great commitment and
passion. The challenge to reach all
the disadvantaged people of South
Africa remains a paramount one.

9. CENTRES OF
EXCELLENCE-
INVESTING IN SOUTH
AFRICAN COMMUNITIES
In 2008, Afrika Tikkun opened its first ‘Centre of
Excellence’ called Afrika Tikkun Wings of Life
in Diepsloot. Originally established as a transit
camp for people who had been removed from
Zevenfontein, Diepsloot is now home to South
Africans as well as asylum seekers from all over
Africa. The Centre initially operated a crèche
from a container before the first permanent
structure, a feeding kitchen, was constructed.
To date Afrika Tikkun has invested just shy of
R2 650 000 in the Wings of Life infrastructure.
We have an Early Childhood Developent
programme for 250 children; a library;
extensive vegetable gardens; an indoor sports
hall; learning support and computer facilities;
a busy kitchen complex; and an administration
block offering- amongst other programmes-
the comprehensive Gender-based Violence
Programme.
Over the past 7 years Afrika Tikkun has
invested in building Centres of Excellence in
the other communities where we work. From
the Braamfontein renovation of a wing of the
former Transvaal Children’s Hospital to the
state-of-the-art facilities today available in
Mfuleni, Afrika Tikkun has invested in creating
amazing spaces for children and youth to
enjoy in the communities where they live.
Afrika Tikkun has invested over R40 million
in building and maintaining infrastructure in
the hearts of 6 communities to provide a safe
place where children thrive.

10. The first years of childhood are a time
when children develop quickly learning
to walk, talk and explore the world
around them. Comprehensive research
shows that investment in children
during this crucial time of development
is a highly cost-effective strategy,
especially in developing countries.
ECD programmes have been shown to
have remarkable impacts on reducing
inequality with long-term effects on
children’s academic attainment, future
employment, earnings. It has even been
shown that children that attend ECD are
significantly less likely to be convicted
of crime in adulthood! The deepest
foundation always supports the tallest
building and in order for young boys and
girls to be industry captains one day,
an investment in their early childhood
development is of great importance.

be at the centre of her circle of friends. Afrika Tikkun made
it possible for this little girl to attend the ECD, despite the
material deprivation experienced by her family. She was
assessed by Social Worker Innocent Madingo, and attends
Afrika Tikkun ECD free of charge: “Simhiwe’s parents come
from Mozambique, and although her father sells vetkoek
on the Golden Highway, the family really struggles to make
ends meet. Their children don’t qualify for social grants,
and Simphiwe’s older sister has a disability”. In addition
to the ECD, Siphiwe’s family also provided a new home
for Simphiwe’s family on Mandela Day 2014 to replace
their dilapidated shack. Elinah, Simphiwe’s mother, is also
a founding member of the Empowerment Programme:
Children with Disabilities and Their Families’ self-help group
which she now calls her ‘other family’.
Mashudu Jane Ramabulana, a qualified

at Afrika Tikkun’s Uthando Centre. Every
day 250 ECD children arrive early for

16. My name is Karabo Seduma. In early 2011, I heard Patricia
Ledwaba- General Manager of Afrika Tikkun’s Phutaditjaba
Centre- on Alex FM local radio station, talking about Afrika Tikkun.
I heard that they needed young people to participate in sports, so
my friend and I went. I started on the CYD sports programmes,
then became a youth intern, and soon was promoted to being a
library facilitator. While in the post I did a library management
course.
In the year 2013, I was privileged to represent Afrika Tikkun in
two triathlon competitions hosted in the USA and London as a
swimmer. When I was with my coach Thomas Taole standing on
the bridge, he showed me the distance that I needed to swim.
I was nervous and thought that I could not do it. Just the same
as when I applied for a vacancy for donor relations officer in the
Afrika Tikkun fundraising department at Head Office. I thought I
was out of my depth, but it has been a long time coming: I was
successful and now I’m a permanent employee!

We promote positive education and personal outcomes by

Since 2007 Afrika Tikkun has sent over
70 athletes to compete on the world

invites three participants each ( a total
of nine participants) from Afrika Tikkun
communities to participate in races held
in the USA, Germany and the UK. In 2014
Afrika Tikkun sent 3 individuals to the
United Kingdom to participate in the Belron
Triathlon.
In 2014, this team consisted of Phumzile
Valashiya from Orange Farm, Precious Hlaka
who came first in her running discipline and
Lebogang Mashabela on the bike. This was
an impressive performance and our team of
2014 outshone their predecessors.
Throughout their training and the build-up
to the trip, the three showed determination
and commitment. This opportunity was about
more than participating in one triathlon, it
was about inspiring more children from their
communities to work hard and reach for their
dreams.
“You can achieve a lot by getting involved and
this has left me with a better outlook on life.
I would like to go back to London soon again”
(Precious Hlaka)
Six other young athletes were taken to Las

events. We cherish the relationship we have

TRIP:
We often take it granted that everybody
has been to the city. A group of students
from Afrika Tikkun’s Mfuleni Centre
were taken to the Cape Town the inner
city of Cape Town to obtain first hand
experience of the city and the picture
of world of work at Newmark Hotel. For
some it was the first time they had been
outside of their township. We believe
this experience contributed greatly
to the development of the students
, some of whom had the opportunity
to be absorbed into the hotel after
they graduated from the job readiness
programme

about the role of women in the workplace
as well as striking a balance between

SOCIAL MEDIA BRANDING:
The Brand, Marketing and
Communications Team from
ABSA spent the morning
teaching a selected group of
job readiness students from
4 of our Gauteng centres
how to brand themselves
on Social Media. Recruiters
are using social media to
screen applicants and the
team from ABSA used the
opportunity to help the
students prepare their
social pages accordingly.
A big thank you to all who gave up their time to teach the youth about interview techniques, took
them on field-trips and provided in-depth financial literacy and personal branding training:

20. Busi grew up in rural Eastern Cape in a little village called
Upper Gxulu. Her parents had five children to support and
the family were raised in financial strain. At the age of 15 Busi
had an unplanned pregnancy and dropped out of school. With
her immense courage and resilience she re-enrolled in school
and matriculated in 2002.
Leaving behind her young daughter, Busi migrated to Pretoria
to seek out and pursue study opportunities. After a period of
employment instability and extreme personal challenges Busi
heard about the Afrika Tikkun Career Readiness Programme.
She enrolled and completed the Programme with excellent
results. When a job vacancy arose at Afrika Tikkun head office,
Busi attended interviews with a number of other candidates.
She impressed, and after two interviews, she was awarded
the position.
“This lovely lady, with her charm and charisma, has added
vastly to the quantum of joy and happiness to be found in our
offices. She is a skilled worker and a committed employee”
(Tracey Kotzen: National Programmes Manager, ATS)
The birth of our Youth Skills Development
and Placement Programme delivered by
our sister company Afrika Tikkun Services
(Pty) Ltd (ATS) has given over 1,500
unemployed youth an opportunity at
a better future. ATS offers clients and
partners an end-to-end skills development
solution in that we source, select and train
employable young people for placement
into entry level jobs. Our focus is on young
people based in township communities
who have completed matric but have
otherwise struggled to secure employment
or access further education.
Our baseline training currently consists of a two
month Career Readiness Programme, accredited by
the ETDP SETA with 120 credits as an ABET level 1
course. Over and above the Career Readiness Training
we offer:
• Customisable, accredited, industry-guided entry
level training
• Personal Mastery training as an 8 week stand alone
programme
• Recruitment for and facilitation of learnerships
• Recruitment for the Business Process Outsourcing
Sector
• General recruitment services
Other offerings of this programme include learnerships,
internships, BBBEE consulting and entry-level job
placements

programmes.JuliaSeletihasbeenasocialworkeratAfrika
Tikkun’s Wings of Life Centre for the past 3 years. She
provides every Diepsloot family with a comprehensive
assesment on intake. It is Julia’s responsibility to
make sure at least 35% of ECD children are orphans
or vulnerable children, or children with disabilities.
These policies are active at all Centres and ensures that
our services are accessible to those most in need. The
services provided by the social workers include but are
not limited to parenting skills, grant access support,
food parcel distribution to very vulnerable families,
psychosocial support to child and youth beneficiaries as
well as their families.
Our Centre of Excellence kitchens produce about 57
500 nutritious meals per month. Two of Afrika Tikkun’s
longest serving staff, Martha Tsoeu and Innocentia
Mareletse, have been serving meals to children in Orange
Farm for over 12 years. They recall cooking hundreds of
lunchbox meals from a blue container with several small
community-based organisations in 2002, before moving
to the Afrika Tikkun Arekopaneng Centre in 2009.
We remember in the beginning when there
was no hope, we cooked food for people
and many with HIV were passing away. It is
different now, and these kids are healthy.
I have respect for what I have done with
Afrika Tikkun to make this change
Innocentia Mareletse
From a health point of view, our health
programmes monitor the physical development
of children and youth through activities that
• Measure the heights and weights
of all ECD children quarterly
• Measure the heights and weights of
all Gr 1 – 7 youth twice a year
• Inspect ears, eyes and teeth regularly for all ECD
and primary school children twice per year
• Teach good health and habits to the ECD and youth
• Advise youth on sexually and
reproductive health including STI’s
• Teach young girls good hygiene and matters
relating to sexual reproductive health
We collect masses of information daily to monitor the
activities that Afrika Tikkun beneficiaries engage in.
The Soweto Care System- an integrated data storage
and reporting system - is currently used and allows
remote access to live statistics describing ground-level
operations.
We are planning to strengthen the evaluation of outcomes
for beneficiaries and the effectiveness of our programmes
by including assessments and individual development
plans. These assessments are aimed at evaluating the
effective development of the beneficiaries from an
academic, social and personal perspective. Through the
click of a button the Soweto Care System will provide
detailed information regarding the overall effectiveness
of the organisation as well as detailed information
regarding the personal development of each Afrika
Tikkun beneficiary. This system will provide invaluable
insight into both our strengths and weaknesses enabling
us to focus on those aspects that truly develop our
beneficiaries in accordance to the Cradle to Career model.

Cradle to Career, Afrika Tikkun is dedicated to addressing burning issues in our areas of operation. Where the
human rights, equality, safety and access to healthcare for our beneficiaries has been threatened, Afrika Tikkun
has a longstanding track record of implementing targeted outreach programmes.
Primary Health Care in the Western Cape
Afrika Tikkun responded to the HIV and multi-drug
resistant TB situation in the early part of the century.
In 2003 with 20 community care workers were trained
to implement integrated management of childhood
illnesses in the Cape Flats township of Delft, by 2005
Primary Health Care services were expanded to respond
to the HIV crisis in Mfuleni. The programme currently

and 230 community care workers in Delft and Mfuleni.
In the past year the programme impacted 2746 patients
with 16 379 consultations.

Department in Diepsloot
In 2014, Diepsloot was ranked one of the nation's 10
worst precincts for sexual crime, and was 2nd in the 10
worst precincts for neglect and ill-treatment of children.
Afrika Tikkun’s Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse
Department takes a community-based, multi-sectoral
approach to addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in
the Diepsloot community.
At our Wings Centre of Life 6 partner organisations
provide a one stop facility to support survivors:
• People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA)
• SONKE Gender Justice
• National Children and Violence Trust (NCVT)
• Childline Gauteng
• Teddy Bear Clinic
• Lawyers Against Abuse
OUTREACH
PROGRAMMES
The Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse Department
at Afrika Tikkun demonstrates our understanding of
the linkages and complexities involved addressing
the in abuse of children and women. For children who
experience sexual violence, forensic services are
available through partnership with Teddy Bear Clinic. For
female survivors of GBV, support groups are conducted
by experienced Social Workers. Group sessions are held
monthly for young women where they discuss issues
affecting them. These range from family planning,
menstruation, teenage pregnancy, HIV/A and related
matters.
Afrika Tikkun Empowerment Programme: Children with
Disabilities and Their Families in Gauteng
Children with disabilities are disproportionately vulnerable
to discrimination and, sexual abuse and do not access
the education or justice system on an equal basis with
other children. This Community-based Rehabilitation
Programme was launched at Afrika Tikkun’s Orange
Farm Arekopaneng Centre in 2011. In 2014 the
Programme was expanded to two new sites. Self-help
group members from Orange Farm explained to the
gathered crowds at the launch events in Braamfontien
and Diepsloot that knowing their rights, supporting each
other,andtheindividualcasemanagementofferedbythe
Empowerment Programme had empowered them to take
control and stand up for their children with disabilities.
Their successful lobby for the right to education has
resulted in a new school for their children being opened
in Orange Farm.
Today 386 families of children with disabilities access our
servicesinthreeGautengcommunities.Weprovided12,500

Since 2006 over 13 500 children have participated in annual Afrika Tikkun
Mini-Olympics events. This year’s special day took place at the Sandton Sports
Grounds. Although the morning was a little rainy, the clouds didn’t dampen the
spirits of over 1000 children from all Gauteng sites and their parents.
Together our staff, enthusiastic
donors, beneficiaries and their
parents participatedinmakingdozens
of races, games, and a soccer and
netball league a resounding success.
The day gave the opportunity for
everyone to participate. The inclusive
sport of Sitting Volleyball was also
on offer for children with disabilities
to get involved and have fun. Our
children were not the only ones to
work up a sweat: the Spoor & Fisher
men’s tug-of-war team defeated
a combined team of Vaughan and
Jacqui Blank Family representatives
and the Netsurit (Pty) Ltd women
- who held onto the rope for dear
life! The HSBC sprinters gave it their
all on the track and added fun and
colourful moments to the day.
“On behalf of Spoor & Fisher we
want to thank you for allowing us to
be part of a well organized Afrika
Tikkun sports day. We had so much
fun with the children and it was truly
gratifying. It is so heart-warming
to see how much the children look
forward to the day and compete to
make their respective centres proud.
Please continue making a difference
and challenging the rest of the country
to lead by your example. We are
definitely going to be involved with
and sponsor the sports day in 2015.”

New initiatives and events like the mini-olympics were
conceived to encourage children to stay out of trouble
and have fun while learning.g

The project took place in Gauteng

Adding Hope
Zurich Insurance
Company South
Africa - CSI 2014
When KFC parent company, Yum! Restaurants
International (YRI), adopted hunger relief
as a global cause six years ago, KFC South
Africa saw the potential of using its iconic
brand status to contribute meaningfully
to society. What has transpired over the
past six years has been truly amazing.
Over 70 000 children in South Africa now
get fed nutritious meals through the many
partner beneficiaries that we support, these
beneficiaries get to deploy other funds into
other projects because Add Hope takes care
of their feeding needs.
2014 was a remarkable year for Add Hope.
After raising about R12 million in 2012, we
boldly set ourselves a target of increasing that
in 2014. Our KFC store and restaurant teams,
and franchisees focused together to raise an
unprecedented R30 million in the year!
It is truly a privilege for me to be involved with
KFC’s Add Hope initiative.
Doug Smart,
Managing Director KFC Africa
At Zurich, we care about and believe that we must give back
to our communities through our talent, time and resources.
Being a responsible, sustainable company is essential to
how we do business. Our aspirations not only permeate
our core business operations, but are a reflection of our
commitment to contribute to the sustainable development
of African society.
Our proud association with Mark Lubner and his team at
Afrika Tikkun started in 2008 when we became involved in
a community project in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg.
Through the years, we have expanded our programme and
are pleased to be in a position to provide both monetary
and hands on support through our employee volunteerism
programme.

Like Change is an opportunity to be a part
of a social movement that promotes change
through education, skills development and
job creation resulting in poverty alleviation
and economic development. Change in
action, an element of the campaign, is
designed to get donors to be hands on in the
development of children and youth. It is also
an opportunity to be a part of a team of brands
helping to drive change in the development
of the young people whose lives we are set
to change together as a nation.
Be a part of change. Like Change today

Today Afrika Tikkun has evolved from just taking care of children
to equipping them with the necessary skills and tools to build a
brighter future for themselves and their communities.s

which Afrika Tikkun encourages South African’s to be part of bringing
change in other children’s lives.s

TIKKUN
BRAND
This Tripartite structure is foresight of how most civil
organisations will be structured in the future. Twenty
years of experience have driven us to this level of
innovation.
Our partnership offering is based on the principle of
“Shared Value”. Afrika Tikkun views relationships with
corporate partners far beyond monetary investment
and regular and accurate reporting. It is in our DNA to
engage our partners in 3 primary ways:
• Creating opportunities for brand recognition, brand
awareness and brand loyalty through joint above
the line advertising, below the line advertising,
social media and PR opportunities.
• Assisting our corporate partners to maximize their
governance and compliance including BBBEE and
Tax Deductibility Requirements. As an organization,
we strive to ensure that all our partners, and
particularly our corporate partners, are able to
tick as many compliance boxes as possible as they
relate to tax deductibility and BBBEE compliance.
• Providingengagementopportunitiesforemployees
of our partners through structured employee
volunteer programs (EVP). Here employees of our
corporate partners come out to our communities
to implement pre agreed volunteer activities.
Where the company employees are too busy to
come out to the community centres, we are able to
create employee engagement opportunities where
beneficiaries are taken to our partners premises
and structured skilled based volunteering and
engagement sessions are held within their offices.
In essence, when you invest in or partner with us you
will be investing in communities to create a learned
society, higher earnings potential and capacity building
for future captains of industries – these are future
markets that businesses need to remain fit and proper.
Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment is a government
policy designed to include the majority of South Africans in
the social and economic transformation of the country. In
South Africa, the strongest driver of economic growth outside
of general market conditions prevailing at any point in time is
the BBBEE status of a business.
Afrika Tikkun is one of the recognised organisations
driving the transformation and empowerment of those
persons most marginalized by legacy issues.
This means that Afrika Tikkun is able to address all of the
followingmainBBBEEelementcomplianceandinvestment
needs according to best practice in an integrated manner:
• Ownership
• Management Control/ Employment Equity
• Skills Development
• Enterprise & Supplier Development
• Socio-economic Development
Our Tripartite Structure, makes us more than just a
charitable organization but a business partner and a one
stop-shop to a corporate’s transformation agenda. There
are 4 pillars under the BBBEE Codes of Good Practice we
can partner on and provide points for.

35. The past 20 years have seen Afrika Tikkun
evolve in both its core service offering as well
as in its brand positioning and promise.
The last 20 years have seen Afrika Tikkun evolve in both its core
service offering as well as in its brand positioning and promise.
There are three major evolutions that have transpired in the last
two decades. The “Circle of Care” and the ”Holistic Development
Model” focused on the holistic growth and development of a child
to ensure they have the opportunity to become a contributing
member of society as they reach adulthood. More recently, Afrika
Tikkun introduced the “Cradle to Career” model with a focus on
directing first time job seekers into appropriate jobs.
A New way of doing business…
The combination of Afrika Tikkun (NPO) and Afrika Tikkun Services
(Pty) Ltd is a glimpse of what the future will look like for most
civil organisations as they start to operate as “social enterprises.”
There is an increasing demand for NPOs to be self sufficient in
the next two decades. The Hybrid Model allows social enterprises
to provide BBBEE points for Socio Economic Development, Skills
Development, Supplier and Enterprise Development.
As grand as this approach is, it does pose a few challenges for
Brand Managers and Marketers alike, as it causes confusion within
corporates who are used to providing grants to NPOs. They are
now being asked by the same NPOs to invest in the for-profit
organisations to ensure maximum social and economic value
creation for disadvantaged communities.
The big question is: "How does the brand get the message across to
corporates about the benefits that come with engaging in a Hybrid
Model?"
As with any innovation within an industry, it will take some
education to get corporate South Africa to buy into the Hybrid
Concept. More sophisticated corporates have incorporated the
concept into their Corporate Transformation Strategies and those
that are still finding their feet are asking the right questions.
For Afrika Tikkun, the Hybrid Model has given the brand an
opportunity to position itself as a one-stop-shop for a corporate’s
Tranformation Agenda, fulfilling multiple pillars under the BBBEE
Codes of Good Practice.
Afrika Tikkun is looking beyond the begging bowl of a charity and
asking corporates “How can we help you with your regulatory
business objectives under the BBBEE Codes?”

36. I began my relationship with Afrika Tikkun through my role in Community Affairs at UBS. After only a
few meetings and visits to your centres, I knew that Afrika Tikkun was an organisation that I wanted to
partner with. The professional manner and the way you make your projects accessible to your donors
makes Afrika Tikkun the obvious choice whenever international clients ask to visit a local charity. I am
always confident that what you show them will impress them and inspire confidence that lives are being
changed in a significant and sustainable way.
My husband and I have always invested in projects that bring long-term benefits to families and
communities in need. We believe in the ripple effect of equipping people strategically and improving
life and opportunities from the inside out. Our visits to some of Afrika Tikkun's pre-schools have been
profound for us as a family – thank you for always hosting us so warmly and for giving us the opportunity
to teach our children about the world and the part we can play to make it a better place.
- Natalie and Warren Muir
Thanks to all of you Benjamin, Romain, Matthieu and I have a treasure trove of unforgettable memories
from this wonderful week with Afrika Tikkun! Having seen, over the last decades, many organizations of
all kinds and their leaders at all levels, I believe I can say honestly that I have rarely seen as purposeful,
engaging, and energizing an organization as Afrika Tikkun, and as dedicated and effective leaders (and
doers) as each and every one of you. We have been impressed by the formidable impact you are having
on the lives of so many children and teenagers in need, as well as on their families and their environment.
Congratulations on your impact! And many hearty thanks from the four of us, for this week with you
which will remain indelibly printed in our minds and in our hearts. With fond regards
- Benjamin, Matthieu, Romain and JP Bizet
We write to thank you for inviting us to share an inspiring morning with you and the members of your
team on Wednesday, 10 September 2014. The enthusiasm and commitment of the Afrika Tikkun team
was evident and benefits of the programme are clear to see. Thank you for allowing Webber Wentzel to
contribute in its small way.

Ruth, Jane and I as representatives of IDSA to be part of your wonderful vision. Through your organisation
you have proven beyond a doubt that it is indeed possible that all persons can learn given a chance. May
you continue to bless others as the Lord continues to bless you with good health and resources.

WE BELIEVE IN A FUTURE WHERE TODAY’S YOUNG PEOPLE ARE TOMORROW’S PIONEERS.
For them to be pioneers one day, we need to invest in their education and because a child
cannot learn on an empty stomach, we need to provide proper nutrition so they can grow
to be big and strong. No matter what, there is nothing more important than family to build
a strong character, or a place to call home where they can feel safe and protected at all
times.
We believe in growing a child from Cradle to Career because one day they need to sit in a
job that they dreamt about when they were young.
38. • Our Endowment Trust holds equity in a variety of
South African Blue Chip companies and we are
able to demonstrate that we are indeed a BBBEE
organisation that delivers tangible value to our
equity partners whilst ensuring that any dividend
distribution goes towards large-scale social
upliftment. It is our plan to substantially grow our
equity holdings in the belief that we should be
considered worthwhile partners. The immediate
goal is to raise approximately R500 million in equity
holding values.
• Increasing efforts to engage other organisations
and individuals to use the platform we have created
to effect meaningful and sustainable change
for township children and youth. In the coming
years we will build on our links with Government
Departments as an effective service delivery
partner and our strategic intent is to forge more
effective, substantial and sustainable public-private
partnerships.
• Finally, our philosophy of promotion from within
means we will expend time and funds developing
our internal staff so that Afrika Tikkun is seen as an
inspirational and aspirational work environment.
We believe in a culture of respect for all things and will

As we move into the next 20 years of our history, the
uniqueness of our approach sets us apart from many other
organisations. Our programmes are community-based and
draw on local resources from the townships and communities
where we work. Proof of this is that the large majority of our
staff come from within walking distance of our centres. In fact,
many of them gained the skills and training required for their
work by attending Afrika Tikkun programmes.
We offer companies economic benefit for their corporate
social investment as we are able meet their labour needs
through the deployment of talented, values-driven individuals
for employment. With the incorporation of our sister company
Afrika Tikkun Services (PTY) Ltd, we now have the added
value of being able to offer our corporate partners advice
on how to improve their Corporate BBBEE scorecards whilst
creating recruitment opportunities, screening candidates
for jobs and ensuring job readiness training prior to job
placement.
Afrika Tikkun is never static - we constantly refine
our services in a dynamic way to ensure relevance and
effectiveness. From 2015 into the next 20 years, we will be
focusing more keenly on the following:
• Improving basic literacy and numeracy, starting at an
early stage of a child's life and continuing throughout
school. Our ECD programmes will therefore see major
upgrades through enhanced teacher training and
further engagement with parents to assist in more
effective early education. We will also place more
emphasis on structured educational support with
focus on improving school grades and matric results.
• Aggressive investment in job training and recruitment
with a view to placing more ‘graduates’ into jobs in
selected industry sectors.
