2. WHAT IS A SHORT FILM?
A short film is any film, not long enough to be considered a feature film.
They were originally known to be 20 to 40 minutes long, nowadays a short
film can last anything from 2 to 15 minutes long. Because of their short
duration, they save a lot of time and are easy to set up.
3. PURPOSE OF SHORT FILMS
As mentioned previously, short films require a lower budget and take less time to set
up, unlike a feature film as the production of a short film don't need a conglomerate
(the directors are independent and are also without a large team or
sponsors). Therefore, they're often produced by many directors to present their
artistry, creativity and abilities to the world in a short way, without having to pay a lot
of expenses, such as on actors and equipment. Short films are considered to be a
stepping stone to a feature. If successful, the director may get noticed or discovered
and become a professional film/movie director in the industry and get the
opportunity to create a special and new project/feature.
Short films are also produced to send and teach a particular message to the audience
or to promote a topic or something with meaning to a director.
4. CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF A SHORT FILM
The conventions of short film characters are very obvious, as
they tend to include only 1-3 main characters. Also not
enough time is available for the filmmaker to produce a back
story for each character, therefore they typically have just a
few actors. This also really allows the viewers to feel
connected and relate to the characters in a short film in a
short period of time.

5. Twist:
It is very common for short films to have a twist
the story that makes it very engaging for the
audience to watch. Although, they sometimes
have a simple narrative, the twist can make it
creative and interesting to watch. To take an
example, in the short film, 'The Black Hole', the
twist was about a black hole being on a paper
that was actually reality, which a man takes
advantage of, but eventually fails.
6. CONCEPT/STORY LINE:
Short films are generally exciting due to the
developed everyday settings and situations
which are very relatable to the viewer.
A scenario that everybody goes through,
presented in a creative way, makes it easier and
helps the audience to relate to the short film, as
well as to keep them interested.
It iv very conventional for short films to follow
the Todorov’s Theory of Equilibrium. This theory
has 5 stages that are applied in many films,
equilibrium, disruption, recognition of the
disruption, attempt to repair the damage and a
new equilibrium . The first stage is the
equilibrium, where everything is normal and
balanced. The disequilibrium, on the other hand
occurs when a problem occurs and then ends
with a new equilibrium. At this stage, the
problem has been solved, but with obvious and
apparent changes.
