Sharp selling was seen in turmeric futures on the heels of strong
production estimates coupled with comfortable carryover stocks in
local mandies. The market sources stated that total production in the
current year is projected at 90 lakh bags against 57 lakh bags of the last
year in the same period due to sharp rise sowing acreage in states such
as Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Moreover, total carryover stocks are
also reported at 23 lakh bags in local mandies. The source pointed that
these stocks can easily cater the exporters and processors demand in
next 6-7 months (before fresh arrivals ). The NCDEX September
futures declined by almost 4 percent at close at Rs 7414 per quintal.
An official meeting to discuss measures to ensure availability of
essential commodities at reasonable prices, especially of pulses, was
held under the chairmanship of Union Consumer Affairs Secretary. The
meeting was attended by Principal Secretaries, Food, Civil Supplies &
Consumer Affairs of States and other senior officials. The meeting
reviewed availability of pulses and sugar and stock limits imposed by
States thereon, bringing down price difference between wholesale and
retail, lifting of pulses from Central Buffer Stock and strict enforcement
of Packaged Commodities Rules. In the meeting, States informed that
the prices of pulses have started registering downward trends in recent
weeks and expected to decline further.
Global Sugar futures are failing to gain much traction after a drop
from one month high recently as hopes of elevated output in Brazil
weighs on the market. Raw Sugar is quoting just under 20 cents per
pound mark. Conab, the Brazilian crop supply agency lifted its forecast
for sugar production in the country's cane belt by 2.32m tones, citing
dry weather and the large amount of cane left over from last season.
Conab saw sugar output in the Centre South region at a record 36.55
million (m) tones for the current 2016-17 season. This compares to a
forecast of 34.23m tones made in April, at the start of the current
season, and 30.88m tones produced in the 2015-16 crop year.
