4. ECONOMIC NEWS
Despite the hype over the farm loan waiver scheme under which BJP
government promised to waive farm loans of up to Rs 1 lakh, the number of
farmers getting the maximum benefit has been just 11% of the total targeted
beneficiaries. Records show that just 10 lakh of the total targeted 86 lakh debt-
ridden farmers in the state could get the maximum benefit of Rs 1 lakh as
envisaged under the scheme that was launched to fulfil BJP’s key poll
promise. According to the data of state agriculture department, over 66 lakh
farmers registered under the scheme till date and around 36 lakh farmers got
loan waiver, out of which just one-fourth could get maximum loan waiver of
Rs 1lakh. The data further reveals that the scheme benefited only 2.5 lakh
farmers in the parched and economically backward Bundelkhand region, which
has often been in news for suicides by debtridden farmers.
Soon the people of Gujarat will be able to watch live sharks from inside glass
tunnel, watch penguins, otters, jelly fish, octopus, stingray, cayman,
hammerhead sharks and a number of sea, river and other aquatic species in
simulated natural habitats at the upcoming aquatic life science park in Science
City. Work order for the Rs 257 crore project has already been issued by the
state government to a firm consortium of Marinescape and Shapoorji.
Dhananjay Dwivedi, secretary, science and technology, Gujarat government,
said about the project, “At the proposed aquatic life science park, students and
visitors will be able to see aquatic life of different zones like Indian, Asian,
African, Americas, Oceans of the World, different types of sharks, weird
aquatic species, and rare species found in different parts of the
world.” Speaking about the progress of the project, Dwivedi said, “Expected
project cost is Rs 257 crore and the expected time limit for the project is 18 to
24 months. Tendering process is over and work order has already been issued.
Construction work is expected to start shortly.’’
The Consortium of Pepper Growers Organisation, Karnataka, Kerala and
Tamil Nadu has urged the government to levy 54% duty on imports from
Sri Lanka under SAFTA and scrap the Indo-Sri Lankan Free Trade
Agreement quantity of 2,500 tonnes. “Pepper production in Sri Lanka has
increased substantially from the days of implementation of these trade
agreements and other origin Pepper is entering the country with Certificate
of Origin issued by Sri Lankan authorities,” the Consortium said. Data from
various ports (Cochin Sea Port, Mundra Sea Port, Nava Sheva Sea Port,
Chennai Sea Port and Bangalore ICD as well as Tughlakabad ICD) show a
total of 2,212 tonnes of Pepper have been imported in January.
Prices of Tur in spot markets in Maharashtra continues to trade much
below the government declared Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 5,400
per quintal. Huge carry-forward stock and absence of price parity in the
export market are seen weighing on the prices of the pulse. The price of the
pulse has been well below MSP levels even before it started arriving in the
markets. This despite a 20 per cent reduction in area of Tur in the state for
the kharif season of 2017-18. Maharashtra has reported 12.19 lakh hectares
of Tur cultivation in 2017-18 as compared to 15.32 lakh hectares in 2016-
17. State government estimates say Maharashtra will produce around 9.83
lakh tonnes of Tur this year.
An upswing in Jeera production and its consequent higher arrivals in the
market may put Jeera price under pressure. The market is likely to remain
bearish until some support is seen in the form of export orders. Production
is estimated to be higher by 35-40% than last year with both Gujarat and
Rajasthan reporting increase in acreage. The climate was also conducive
and the output is likely to be high. Arrivals are as high as 18,000-20,000
bags per day from Gujarat. More Jeera will come into the market when
harvest starts in Rajasthan. Production in 2016-17 is estimated to be 70 lakh
bags. Carryover stocks are also on the higher side and the support may
come only by March-end in the way of export demand.
