Then, from the time of the
cathedrals, the brilliantly colored
stained glass served a functional and
didactic purpose.
TODAY, Architects face an
increasing array of choices in
specifying and designing with glass
for building facades, as glass
manufacturers propose a greater
variety of colors, textures and
patterns than ever before.

THEFARNSWORTH HOUSE, PLANO
Designed in 1945 and constructed in 1951, the iconic
Farnsworth House is the essence of Mies van der Rohe’s
use of glass, and was in many ways an experiment to test
his design ideals to the limit.
Architect Mies van der Rohe, glass was a MAJORINFLUENCE
for many architects of the modernist movement and
reshaped the way we think about and define space. Today,
glass has become one of the most used building materials.
The use of glass and its inherent transparency brought a
subtle harmony to the streamlined modernist structure and
the landscape of the Fox River beyond.

It can be concluded that the contemporary architecture is
particularly interested in glass, and it is being more
extensively applied in architecture as a result of improvement
its production technology. Glass innovations have progressed
and many architects and engineers have redefined the
material's potential. With everything from structural glass
used in floors and beams, to sculptural facades, to transparent
solar panels, the use of glass continues to evolve.
There is a special relationship between glass and
buildings. Glass is a MAGICALMATERIAL which has so many
different properties and uses, that it has presented Architects
with many new possibilities and designs.
