2. Who is Hamish Fulton?
Hamish Fulton is a British
artist/photographer, usually referring
to himself as a “walking artist”. Born
in 1946, since 1972 he has based his
artwork on the experience of walks.
He translates his walks into a variety
of media, from photography to
illustrations and wall texts etc. Fulton
argues that “walking is an artform in
its own right” and argues for wider
acknowledgement of walking art.
3. How does he manage to express his artwork?
Fulton manages to express
his artwork through visually
recording his journeys as
well as using words, photos
and symbols. Fulton follows
a no trace ethic, he doesn’t
collect any materials on his
walks and leaves everything
untouched and as natural as
it was before. His work is
contained in major
museums collections, such
as the Tate Britain and
MoMA. Fulton stated that
walking is an experience
not an art medium, and
that what he builds is an
experience - not a
sculpture.

This kind of artwork would be
aimed at older audience, since it
consists only of texts and there are
only two colours put in this piece.
Fulton focused on the visual
hierarchy, pretty much leading us
to read what he wants us to read
first. The font used is san-serif,
therefore quite simplistic. In this
piece Fulton refers to one of his
walking experiences as he does in
most of his pieces.
This particular piece consists only
of a picture (which was took by
Fulton on one of his walks) and
texts manipulated by visual
hierarchy. The text included in his
work is almost like a poem written
on an image, it refers in kind of a
personal way to his experience
which he wants to share with us.
The audience of this image yet
again would be adults/older people
since to understand this kind of art
you need to think it through a lot.
Like most of Fulton’s work, this is
another piece that focuses on an
image and text combination. This
image presents Fulton’s walking
group with everyone stood in a line.
The numbers refer to the hours of
silence performed during the walk.
The tone of this photograph is quite
cold and wintery, even though there
