INTRODUCTION
Kenya is well known worldwide as a tourist destination.Kenyans are hospitable and the services they offer are efficient and
varied.In addition,Malindi town has established itself as a truley tourist centre that could be used for displaying our cultural
art,drama,music and natural endowement.in view of this,the Malindi County Council in patnership with the Ministry of Tourism
wants to deveelop a tourist terminaland information centre at Malindi Town.This will act as a hub for tourists in ths part of the
coastal region.In addition , the centre attempts to embody the aspiration and pride of the Swahili People to both the overseas
and local tourists.
OBJECTIVES
The objective of this project is to demonstrate understanding of how to design environmentally friendly buildings in a warm
humid climate where design development effectively takes care of thermal control and cooling effects.In designing this
project ,the guiding parameters should be conservation of urban space and its heritage.The students should demonstrate all
the lessons lernt in terms of use of local materials,environmental control and conservation of both buildings and urban fabric.All
this contextual aspects should be integrated in the design of the centre.The other objectivesof this programme are to acquaint
students wih the following:
1.The environmental conditions of the costal region and appropriate design solutions
2.The physical,socio-cultural and economic dimensions of the costal people
3.Architectural qualities of a historic urban settlement.

The form of the complex is a fusion of Swahili architecture with modernistic architectural elements In an effort to
respond to the Hot and humid Malindi climate deep set window and sunshaded windows have been utilised
Mashrabiya has been used to sunshade all glazed areas of the complex,
Pergola's with tentrils for covered walkway and seats with tree shades to keep off the scorching sun,the complex has
several water ponds and water fountain that help cool through evaporation
The hotel has been strategically placed to face the ocean for views,breeze and privacy the entire building has been
lifted up by 450mm to tap the North east moon wind and the ever present ocean breeze
on the Ground floor the primary spaces are the Dining space and the kitchen,the diining spaces has been suitably
placed to face the ocean and an adjacent islamic garden next to the dining space is an outdoor diner with jetting
water feature around creating a perfect ambience for unwinding and ultimate relaxation
on the first floor is a boardroom ,concierge office, Rooms and a terrace ,the terrace has a good view to the ocean and
the entire complex.
on the same floors we have double rooms with exlcusive balconies all facing towards the ocean ,the rooms are well
sunshaded and ventilated and finished off with the Swahili interior design

The first floor consist mainly of offices and small service shops e.g the cyber ,pharmacy etc,they all
contained withing the main courtyard
The Bar island is sited slightly away from the main hotel dining space to separate kids and religious
individuals from the bar spaces, the bar FLoats on water thus the 'Bar island' it offers one with
360deg view around the site creating a perfect spot for unwinding from the bustle and hustle of the
regular day life.
The jetty takes shape of a crescent moon with a star in the middle,This is borrowed from the islamic
symbol of a mosque, the jetty has seats shaded with palms that creates this serene space perfect for
meditation and relaxation.
