Lot of plastic materials come home. After use they are discarded as waste.Many agencies collect waste from Residents for a charge but these agencies end up in burning them in public spaces, which is harmful and illegal.
1. Burning waste in the Urban Area!
Dear Friends,
Yes, we know that the Corporation of Trivandrum is doing their might in
enacting laws and also arranging domestic waste to be collected by
agencies. But what happens to these waste collected by various
agencies, is a matter which brings smoke and smell in urban areas
where the residents do not share their problems or joys. At my place
near the Kannammoola bridge three roads make a junction of oneway
traffic. Here a statue of Shri Ayyankali is adorning the center of the
junction. As night falls slowly burning smell spreads and by 9 pm the
burning of plastics fills the junction and all the Air in this area is
polluted. Even the early morning air is having the smell of the prevoius
nightโs burn. I am a citizen, I try to call the Kannammoola Health Office
and the BSNL operator says it is dead. I call Health Officer, she cuts the
call. When I call her again using another phone thinking that my phone
may be the culprit, she says, she is travelling and communication while
travelling is not uniterupted. She told me that she will look into the
matter. I sent mail to Hon.Mayor, Secretary, Chairman Health Standing
Committee etc. Our City is going to be a smart one?.Corporation is
banning Carry bags and plastics. Then why give licence to sell milk
sachets, medicines in plastic bottles,condoms,sanitary napkins and
tampon packings, umpteen plastic items as foot wear, curtains, items
for food supplies. Citizens are confused. Can we know how many of
Clean City Green City projects were started from 2000 to 2016 and how
many are surviving. What I observed is that many job opportunities
were created. Truly, there are no real experts in the waste
management area in the Corporation. If there had been, there would
not have been a Vilappilsala, Incinerator on wheels etc.
2. It will be very kind of the Mayor to appoint sincere officers to find out
waste burning sites in the City. The prevailing Lung diseases and
Cancers that is going to happen-emerge after 20 years in Trivandrum
City will be the gift of the Different Mayors representing various
political Parties for the last20 years, who ruled the place. I am indebted
to the small children and old aged people who suffer from the daily
smoke and others getting various products in plastics, who made me
write little hard.
