How to Resolve Conflict Essay
Conflict is in inevitable part of our everyday lives. Since no two people view things in the exact same manner, disagreement will most certainly arise
at some point in time. Conflict is simply a difference of opinion and is considered to be a normal part of our everyday lives. There are several different
forms of conflict and not all of them are considered to be bad. This paper will discuss the causes of conflict, the different types of conflict, and barriers
to conflict. According to Communication Research Associates, conflict is a condition of imbalance within an individual (Communication Research
Associates, 2005, p. 178). Keep in mind that just as there are disadvantages to conflict, there are also several advantages.

For example, if you are at work and walk by someone's desk and accidently knock their pen on the floor. All of sudden, the person lashes out and
starts to curse at you. Knowing that this is not the norm for your coworker, it would safe to assume that they are under some form of stress or have
other things on their mind. By knowing this, it becomes easier to respond in a more responsible, tempered, and appropriate, manner. Sometimes ego
can become a cause for conflict as well. There may come a time when someone is wrong about something or they may have made a mistake but they
refuse to admit it. Because they have such a high ego, they may become self–protective of their situation, therefore causing conflict because they refuse
to admit they were wrong. Instead they may choose to become persistent in standing their ground, whether they are right or wrong.
During communication, if the intended goals are not clearly identified, there is a greater possibility for error and it could further aggravate a situation,
causing conflict. Because each individual is different there are bound to be clashes within certain personality types. For example, if someone prefers
to discuss everything in detail and I prefer to get straight to the point then we could have a personality clash because we are not seeing things
eye–to–eye. They may view me as being incompetent or irresponsible while I would

Reflective Essay About Conflict
Conflict is everywhere. Conflict takes place on a daily basis, it takes place when one has no clue they are in conflict until moments later when the
situation is either resolved or if the issue is arising. Others may feel extremely comfortable with dealing with conflict when it takes place; however, in
my personal experience, I've always been one to avoid conflict. It makes me feel uncomfortable due to my past and seeing how my parents would react
when conflict would take place between them. Seeing the violence and harsh communication they had during their marriage that later affected the
entire family. Growing up and dealing with conflict, I faced difficult obstacles and it has prepared for the worst as I gained a few traits in order to
comprehend the ongoing situation. In other words, conflict can generate tremendous amount of energy, but can causedestruction. Others may come out
fighting, trigger danger, and more beyond instincts on how to engage better with conflict instead of responding negatively. Hocker states, "Conflict is a
fact of human life," but little do many realize that conflict tends to take place in different various settings (Hocker & Wilmot, 2014, p. 2). Finding
proper solutions to conflict can be overwhelming from time to time, but as one begins to communicate with the other party, things begin to flow better,
and the problem–solving gets easier.

Conflict Definition Essay
While growing up, I did not have to deal with much conflict. The little conflict I had to adhere to was usually constricted within my household. In
meaning, if something happened within my household, it was to be kept in my household. My mother did not and still do not like for everyone to be
"all in her business." As I got older, I realized how much I did not like how situations was resolved. Keeping the conflict constricted only made the
problem grow larger within the household. Everyone in my household was very strong and opinionated. Therefore, they would stick to their side of the
story. There wasn't any outside voice to settle the disputes. If one would agree with the other side, then the other person would just walk around the

dealing with conflict. Now, if I had a chance to go back in time and practice grace, I would. Now, I know that every situation doesn't have to end
with physical violence or hiding emotions. I learned that when there is a problem, I need to get help outside of my household. That's how I find
better understanding. I have a personal mediator, which is my grandmother. A mediator works with people who are in a conflict to reach a decision
but has no power to make a decision (146). With family conflicts, I tend to call my grandmother. She listen to my side, then listen to the other's side,
and then speak from wisdom. When there is a situation outside of my family, I still run to my granny. She usually allow me to see things from other's
perspective. Therefore I am able to have a better understanding in how a situation was constructed. I feel as if I am wiser and I learned how to handle

CONFLICTS AND DISPUTES ARE INEVITABLE Conflict is defined as the behaviour due to which people differ in their feelings, thought and/or
actions. Collins (1995) states that the conflict is a 'serious disagreement and argument about something important' and also as 'a serious difference
between two or more beliefs, ideas or interests' (cf. Kumaraswamy, 1997, p. 96). In general it is believed that conflicts are the underlying cause of
disputes. In other words, dispute is a manifestation of the deep rooted conflict. A dispute is defined as 'a class or kind of conflict, which manifests
itself in distinct, justifiable issues. It involves disagreement over issues capable of resolution by negotiation, mediation or third party adjudication'

So, it is said that a conflict can exist without a dispute but a dispute cannot exist without a conflict (Spangler and Burgess, 2003). Many authors have
highlighted the inevitability of conflicts on the other hand it is said that disputes can be prevented or at least can be minimized through proper
management. Conflicts are ubiquitous where ever a large number of people are involved i.e. where the human relationships proliferate
(Kumaraswamy, 1997). People are the principle resource for any commercial project today. Different project managers, engineers, surveyors
belonging to different organizations and having different needs, goals and each of them looking to maximize their benefits are brought together to
form a team. Because of these differences in the individuals the conflicts and disputes become inevitable in a project. Conflicts are generally
perceived as a negative term but it has both positive and negative sides. Positive conflicts can be helpful to generate new ideas, make innovations,
helps people to 'Be real' and creative. But this conflict has to be maintained so that it does not get out of control and bring about dysfunctional
consequences. There are large numbers of potential sources that makes conflict inevitable in a project. Some of them are explained below: – (scribd) It

Conflict and negotiation in the workplace
Conflict occurs with two or more people who, despite their first attempts at agreement, do not yet have agreement on a course of action, usually
because their values, perspectives and opinions are contradictory in nature. Conflict can occur: 1. Within yourself when you are not living according to
your values. 2. When your values and perspectives are threatened. 3. When there is discomfort from fear of the unknown or from lack of fulfillment.
Conflict is inevitable and often necessary when forming high–performing teams because they evolve through "form, storm, norm and perform" periods.

Be aware that this approach tends to worsen the conflict over time.
2. You can accommodate it.
You can give in to others, sometimes to the extent that you compromise yourself. Use this approach very sparingly and infrequently, for example, in
situations when you know that you will have another more useful approach in the very near future. Usually this approach tends to worsen the conflict
over time, and causes conflicts within yourself.
3. You can compete with the others.
You can work to get your way, rather than clarifying and addressing the issue. Competitors love accommodators. Use this approach when you have a
very strong conviction about your position.
4. Compromising.
You can engage in mutual give–and–take. This approach is used when the goal is to get past the issue and move on together.
5. Collaborating.
You can focus on working together. Use this approach when the goal is to meet as many current needs as possible by using mutual resources. This
approach sometimes raises new mutual needs. Collaboration can also be used when the goal is to cultivate ownership and commitment.

Different Types of Conflicts Essay
Conflicts can happen within a group due to various reasons.
These types of conflict can be classified into conflict over responsibility of team members, conflict over insufficient resources, conflict over
interpersonal relationship and conflict of interests. In terms of conflict that exist in our group, the conflict over insufficient resources arose, as there was
a slight issue on the use of materials in the second game of the team building activities.
The second game of CA1, as mentioned above, involved 'protecting' the balloon from bursting as we were given different types of materials to devise
a method to ensure the balloon did not burst when we release the balloon into the basket containing a needle. With the 10 given materials, we...show

Conflicts continue to fester when ignored and they stay with us until we face and resolve them. We may respond to conflicts based on our
perceptions of the situation, not necessarily to an objective review of the facts. Our perceptions are often influenced by our life experiences, culture,
values, and beliefs, and conflicts trigger strong emotions. However, if these emotions are not managed properly, the conflict won't be able to resolve
conflict successfully. Thus, to allow us to better understand the conflict, first of all, we need all parties to have an open and perceptive to different
opinions or ideas that we are faced with. It is true that no two minds are the same, and no two person think the same way for every single problem.
Therefore, conflicting parties should stand from an unbiased point of view by all parties can allow further steps in liaising for a common agreement,

Conflicts can be an opportunity for growth. When you're able to resolve conflict in a relationship, it builds trust. A sense of security is assured when
the people in a relationship survive challenges and disagreements. Conflict triggers strong emotions and can lead to hurt feelings, disappointment, and
discomfort. When handled in an unhealthy manner, it can cause irreparable rifts, resentments, and break–ups. But when conflict is resolved in a
healthy way, it increases our understanding of one another, builds trust, and strengthens our relationship bonds.

Conflict means a struggle or problem between two opposing groups or individuals. There are two types of conflict: internal and external conflict. An
internal conflict is a struggle that is internalized and deals with choices, consequences, or emotions. An internal conflict is a man vs. self struggle. An
external conflict is a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force. External conflicts are either man
verses man, man verses nature, or man verses society. Various examples of internal and external conflicts can be shown in Guy de Maupassant's "The
Necklace," Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game," and O.Henry's, "The Gift of the Magi." Firstly, Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" shows

He is put into a situation where he has to swim until he finds shelter. He swims, and "for a seemingly endless time he fought the sea" (Connell 42).
After a while, he found an island called Ship Trap Island. So, this shows how he fought against nature. Another example of conflict in this story is
when Rainsford has to fight against General Zaroff, who is an expert at hunting humans on Ship Trap Island. As Rainsford gets challenged by
Zaroff, he says, "'Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer'" (49). This shows an example of another external conflict. But, this one is a man verses
man conflict because Rainsford is facing a problem with another character in the story. Therefore, Rainsford faces many situations where he has to
choose between life or death. Lastly, examples of conflict can be shown in "The Gift of the Magi" by O.Henry. This story is about a cute couple
that is willing to do anything to buy each other Christmas presents. An internal conflict faced by Della Young, the protagonist, is when she does not
have enough money to buy her husband Jim a present. All Della had was "one dollar and eighty seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas"
(O. Henry 153). To get more money, Della sells her most prized possession, which is her hair. After Della and Jim finally bought their presents by
selling their most prized possessions, another conflict arose. Della bought Jim a chain for his watch, and Jim bought Della hair combs that she

Essay about Causes and Consequences of Conflict
Encountering Conflict – Secret river
'A conflict's importance lies not in its causes but in its consequences.'
In today's rising society, where we experience people willing to strive to their maximum potential by any means necessary, it becomes blatantly
obvious to why we often overlook the implications we inflict on others. We are sometimes aware of our actions, acting in spite or in fear, and
sometimes ignorant to the situation, unaware of the consequences we deliver. The question is however – where does the importance of conflict lie – in
its causes? Or in its consequences? It seems evident that there are many people will use their spite and fear and perhaps even compassion to
exacerbate conflict. People all too easily become to...show more content...
A question rarely easy to answer, but an important one to decipher. It would be highly ignorant to say that the consequences are the most important
aspect of conflict in all cases when it is evident that the causes play just as big a part.
The Australian Aboriginals themselves had to adjust to survive. They had to find a way to live in this land after they first arrived. If Aboriginals were
not to continue in conflict with the land and the others they shared it with, change became a necessity. Over time they developed a harmonious way to
live and prosper within the limitations of their environment – a harmony that became enshrined within their culture. Modern Society is, at an incredible
rate, exploiting and using up resources, that we will not have the luxury of 40,000 years to find a new way of life in order to survive. Our society
could do worse than to try and learn a little from the first Australians. One only has to look at Kate Grenville's main protagonist in 'The Secret River',
William Thornhill, ending the book on his verandah, gazing wistfully out at the ridge across the river, willing an appearance by people of the
Aboriginal clan he had been instrumental in displacing, and thinking the same thing.
When considering the types of conflicts faced by individuals – personal conflict, interpersonal conflict and extra personal conflict, we must also
acknowledge the moral dilemmas, such as racism or differences with immediate others and

Dealing With Conflict Essay
Dealing with Conflict
1.1
 Potential conflict can arise when two parties or people have a disagreement on a particular subject. For example, a person may have
said he was going to complete a task which he failed to do which caused conflict with another person or party, or maybe two people who have
different ideas on who to accomplish a task may become heated.
 Stages of conflict are hard to describe in detail but it usually starts with raised voices to get an opinion across which can escalate into a
yelling match as one person tries to get the other person or party to agree with what he is saying. Basically conflict will stop when both parties or people
agree on something, as conflict won't usually end if there...show more content...

3.1 – Factors Effecting Timing & Environment For Communication
Care should be taken in communicating with other in the workplace. Factors such as anger and stress could be dangerous when communicating, as
people are often very temperamental when affected by these factors. Another factor could be the environment, such as a meeting, could hinder
communication as reputations and even jobs could be at stake if in appropriate communication is used. Basically, there is a time and a place for all
various types of communication and care should be taken when talking to our peers and our bosses.
3.2 – Effective Non–Verbal and Verbal Communication
Body Language – This is important as people usually take note of how a person acts and moves. For example, if a person sometimes scratches their
nose when speaking, it could mean to other people that he is trying to cover something up.
Questioning – Never be afraid to question a person for the sake of your own better understanding of a subject. It is different when questioning a
person's ability or understanding of a subject, which could result in conflict.
Language Style – People in work environments need to be able to understand everyone clearly, so correct language and vocabulary needs to be used in
communicating with other

Organizational Conflict: The three views
Conflict 2
Organizational conflict is a state of discord caused by the actual or perceived opposition of needs, values and interests between people working together.
Conflict takes many forms in organizations. There is the inevitable clash between formal authority and power and those individuals and groups
affected. There are disputes over how revenues should be divided, how the work should be done, and how long and hard people should work. There are
jurisdictional disagreements among individuals, departments, and between unions and management. There are subtler forms of conflict involving
rivalries, jealousies, personality clashes,...show more content...
From this perspective, conflict occurs as a result of malfunctioning individuals or organizations. Therefore, in order to resolve conflict, problems must
be identified, causes must be analyzed, and those people or situations contributing to the conflict must be "fixed" (Kilmann & Thomas, 1978). This
mechanistic view approaches conflict resolution as a logical, linear process. Robbins comments: "Although research studies now provide strong
evidence to dispute that this approach to conflict reduction results in high group performance, many still evaluate conflict situations utilizing this
outmoded standard" (2001, p. 384).
In the 1950s the emerging human relations view of conflict began to replace the earlier traditional view. The human relations position suggests that
conflict is a natural phenomenon in groups and organizations. Therefore, since it is inevitable, it must be accepted and managed. During this era, the
management literature introduced the term conflict management (Nurmi & Darling, 1997); and, by the 1970s, the field of organization development,
with its tool–kit of team–building interventions, began to go mainstream, thus providing organizations with new resources for dealing with conflict.
Conflict 4
More recently, a third conflict school of thought has emerged, referred to as the interactionist view. This perspective

Throughout life people should consider developing integrated conflict management systems to prevent and resolve conflict and provide practical

Conflict is detrimental to a group's ability to work together. Although conflict can never be completely avoided, most personality differences can be
worked around if you know how to identify them, understand how they affect the group and learn methods to avoid them. Thompson, Aranda, and
Robbins (2001) write about two main types of conflict. The first type of conflict is; emotional conflict, or sometimes called A–type conflict. This
conflict can threaten productivity. These personality types can take over a group. They bully the other members into accepting their point of view.
They can be overbearing, or use anger to overwhelm any opposition to their ideas. They can be so opinionated that no one else has a chance to speak
up or get their point across. The next type of conflict is; cognitive conflict, or sometimes called C–type conflict. This conflict usually revolves around
the merits of ideas or plans. Although disagreement can occur, this type of conflict can be used to stimulate creativity. Looking at a problem from
different points of view can assist the whole team in problem solving. The method is to attack the idea not the person. This type of conflict usually
benefits team functioning. The goal is to turn A–types personalities into C–types. There are several different ways of achieving that goal. To start with,
each team member must agree on a common plan. Duties should be divided evenly and all team members must hold each

Conflict is a problematic situation that occurs between interdependent people who seek different goals or means to those goals. Conflict is inevitable as
relationships become closer, more personal, and more interdependent, more conflicts occur, perceived trivial or minor complaints become more
significant, and feelings become more intense. Conflict has many definitions (opposing viewpoints, when opponents engage in battle, going against one
another in some fashion, incompatibility between the objectives of two or more characters or forces) and approaches (avoiding, accommodating,
competing, collaborating, compromising). There are five types of conflict, Value, Relationship, Interest, Data and Structural Conflict. Interpersonal

Once engaged in conversation with another, an effective conflict manager can employ general ways and specific techniques to be supportive. Power
and conflict go hand and hand. It is up to the individual to decide how to handle the two. "Leaders must strive to possess a balance between conflict
and power in order to sustain a high–performance working environment" (Hale, 2009, p.1). Creating and maintaining a more power balanced
organization where everyone has the opportunity to contribute to increase individual's self–esteem. In a general way, people want others to like,
respect, encourage, consult, include, appreciate, and reward them. They want others to ask them questions, greet them warmly, help them when
needed, and make them feel safe. We can also support others in a more specific way. To do this, we need to determine what traits or characteristics the
other perceives in him or her–self and point out the ones we have in common or are capable of supporting. Thus enhancing one's communication skills,
also known as Data Conflict, is paramount when seeking to mediate and subsequently resolve conflict. The purpose of resolving conflict within an
organization is to create a win–win situation for all involved. To this end, organizations develop a protocol to expeditiously and satisfactorily resolve
conflict. Often, the protocol is known as the grievance process. Every faculty and staff of an organization must be given at the time of

Conflict Between Conflict And Conflict
For this paper, I chose conflict because it is present in nearly every aspect of life, it is unavoidable, and knowing how to handle it is a valuable tool
which I would like to investigate. Webster defines conflict as "A mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or
external or internal demands", but the reality is there is no clear definition of how conflict starts, no two conflicts are the same, and they all start for
different reasons over different issues. There are four types of conflict:
Content Conflict – Disagreement caused by differing interpretations of the meaning of a concept or an idea.
Values Conflict– Disagreements over management practices which may be value based regarding how employees should be handled and treated.
Negotiation of Selves Conflict – Conflicts over how one see themselves versus how they are seen by others. Often people see themselves differently
than others see them.
Institutionalized conflict – Conflicts that occur due to the structure of a business or organization. Some businesses encourage conflict as a part of their
decision making process. (Lamberton & Minor, 2014, p.266) Conflict in the work environment is common. Issues like self–worth, recognition, team
dynamics, and compensation; all provide an incubator for conflict. The most common causes for conflict in my opinion are: competition, personality
conflicts, people who choose

Conflict can happen anytime of your life, it will happen matter you want it or not. In addition, it can have both negative and positive impacts for our
relationship (Gudykunst, 2004). According to Yi–Feng 2007, she mentions that conflict is "incompatible activities, where one person's actions are

In term of face and conflict, we can divide in two parts. Firstly, cultural differences in face–concerns, Moriska and Gudykunst 1994 mention that "face
in collectivistic cultures is based on the interdependent self construal". In this case, Members of individualistic cultures attention to self–face

Conflict is a serious disagreement or argument that can happen often. The result of a conflict depends on how high the situation escalates. Me and

and get things taken away or end up getting grounded. In other instances, with my friends we stop talking for a little while and eventually get over
it and start talking again. A great example of this in my life is me and my friend Quincy. Once when we were talking about my bike accident that I

Definition Essay On Conflict
In our world conflict is an issue no human can avoid. Whether hearing about it through the news or through a trusted source, or simply just
experiencing it in daily lives. Conflict in my definition is when there is a disagreement or problem at stake and an issue forms. For example a
conflict can be as little as a small argument of opinions or a fight about toys between siblings, to as immense as a war starting or starvation in certain
countries. Conflict can be emotional, or it can be physical, like a fight. Conflict has happened all over the world. Conflict is what starts wars and can
create chaos among humans. This is similar to the disagreements that took place during a quarrel between the Native Americans and the non–natives

The definition of the action to assimilate according to Merriam Webster is "to absorb into the cultural tradition of a population or group". But in the
case of the Native Americans their assimilation was much more forced. The kids were taken off into boarding schools that taught them how to become
like the white people or the settlers, during this they lost a majority of their culture and background, relationships with family, and even their language
because whenever they tried to speak their native tongue they were beaten and punished. Each child was given a new name according to the English
culture along with learning English, and even dressing like they would.
These were just three of the many factors that played into the conflict between the Native Americans and the Settlers. Out of these three factors I
believe that assimilation is the most important factor. I think that this is so because when the settlers attempted to assimilate the Indians the first time a
major event that happened was the Whitman

A group can only be called a team if the members are actively working together toward a common goal. A team must have the capability to set goals,
make decisions, solve problems, and share responsibilities. For a team to be successful, trust must be earned between its members by being
consistent and reliable (Temme & Katzel, 2005). When more than one person is working on a particular task, inconsistent views or opinions
commonly arise. People come from different backgrounds and live through different life experiences therefore, even when working towards a common

The idea of conflict under this view brings to mind chaos, heated emotion, and high stress. The traditional mindset requires taking all necessary steps to
prevent and remove the source of the conflict that may be detrimental to the team. The human relations view understands that conflict is inevitable and
part of the natural process of interactions. The human relations view is a more neutral outlook, which allows conflict and is tolerant of its presents.
One that comes from this perspective expects conflict in a team setting and is more likely to resolve the issue when it arises rather than trying to
eliminate the source. The interactionist view considers conflict to be energizing and helpful in keeping constructive discussion going. The
interactionist view is a positive view that encourages opinions and expression of all members of an association. Conflict is considered a positive
influence towards change. Causes for Conflict Barbara Bowes discusses three major causes for conflict: different interests/goals, conflicting values, and
interpersonal styles (2008). Even though a team has the same ultimate goal, the intermediate steps to reach this goal may be unparallel. Imagine if Ray
Kroc, fast–food restaurateur, and a gourmet chef teamed up to open a restaurant. What conflicts might transpire? The team may have the same
definitive goal in mind, but the two would more than likely be dealing with the issue of quality versus convenience. The second

Conflict Resolution
What does conflict resolution mean to me? Conflict resolution is when an impartial or neutral person puts a plan into action to resolve and settle
issues within an organization or a team. In the business world today a great amount of focus is being placed on employees working as team unit to
increase new ideas, distribute more job responsibilities among a larger group, and most important create a unified front and camaraderie. Along with
advantages there are always disadvantages, wherever there are teams, there is a chance for conflict. Conflict is almost a guarantee. As long as team

It is extremely vital to the livelihood of a team for the team members to be able use conflict resolutions or reach out to another individual who has
conflict resolution skills.
Is conflict constructive or destructive? Conflict can be good for a team if the members involved in the conflict learn some type of lesson about the
issue. It also can create a solution for future problems with different individuals. It can create a sense of unity and fresh ideas on ways to resolve the
conflict. Conflict can also be a very destructive force to an organization if after all is said and done, conflict continues without a resolution. It creates
chaos instead of camaraderie and divides teams or different groups of people. What causes conflict? There are numerous reasons that conflict may arise
within a team. A team with many different people includes many different personalities, cultures, values, attitudes, needs, expectations, etc.
In order to resolve conflict it is very important to follow a few steps:

2. Create several solutions or options for all parties involved.
3. Make sure all involved agree on the solution.

When I think back of the conflict between my boyfriend and I, I think there was so wrong with the way I handled the conflict in that time. For my boyfriend he might felt innocent and grievance, he maybe just wants to let me claim down first and then talk about the problem between us. My motivational value systems are analytic–autotomizing but he is more like cautious–supporting. Few weeks after, I realized there have thousand ways to solve the conflict between us but I choose the most extreme way and end of our relationship. What do you think the other person might have thought or felt during this conflict?...show more content... • 2. How to Resolve Conflict Essay Conflict is in inevitable part of our everyday lives. Since no two people view things in the exact same manner, disagreement will most certainly arise at some point in time. Conflict is simply a difference of opinion and is considered to be a normal part of our everyday lives. There are several different forms of conflict and not all of them are considered to be bad. This paper will discuss the causes of conflict, the different types of conflict, and barriers to conflict. According to Communication Research Associates, conflict is a condition of imbalance within an individual (Communication Research Associates, 2005, p. 178). Keep in mind that just as there are disadvantages to conflict, there are also several advantages. In order to...show more content... For example, if you are at work and walk by someone's desk and accidently knock their pen on the floor. All of sudden, the person lashes out and starts to curse at you. Knowing that this is not the norm for your coworker, it would safe to assume that they are under some form of stress or have other things on their mind. By knowing this, it becomes easier to respond in a more responsible, tempered, and appropriate, manner. Sometimes ego can become a cause for conflict as well. There may come a time when someone is wrong about something or they may have made a mistake but they refuse to admit it. Because they have such a high ego, they may become self–protective of their situation, therefore causing conflict because they refuse to admit they were wrong. Instead they may choose to become persistent in standing their ground, whether they are right or wrong. During communication, if the intended goals are not clearly identified, there is a greater possibility for error and it could further aggravate a situation, causing conflict. Because each individual is different there are bound to be clashes within certain personality types. For example, if someone prefers to discuss everything in detail and I prefer to get straight to the point then we could have a personality clash because we are not seeing things eye–to–eye. They may view me as being incompetent or irresponsible while I would Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Reflective Essay About Conflict Conflict is everywhere. Conflict takes place on a daily basis, it takes place when one has no clue they are in conflict until moments later when the situation is either resolved or if the issue is arising. Others may feel extremely comfortable with dealing with conflict when it takes place; however, in my personal experience, I've always been one to avoid conflict. It makes me feel uncomfortable due to my past and seeing how my parents would react when conflict would take place between them. Seeing the violence and harsh communication they had during their marriage that later affected the entire family. Growing up and dealing with conflict, I faced difficult obstacles and it has prepared for the worst as I gained a few traits in order to comprehend the ongoing situation. In other words, conflict can generate tremendous amount of energy, but can causedestruction. Others may come out fighting, trigger danger, and more beyond instincts on how to engage better with conflict instead of responding negatively. Hocker states, "Conflict is a fact of human life," but little do many realize that conflict tends to take place in different various settings (Hocker & Wilmot, 2014, p. 2). Finding proper solutions to conflict can be overwhelming from time to time, but as one begins to communicate with the other party, things begin to flow better, and the problem–solving gets easier. Personal Experience Experiencing dramatic conflict events during my parents separation made me feel Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Conflict Definition Essay While growing up, I did not have to deal with much conflict. The little conflict I had to adhere to was usually constricted within my household. In meaning, if something happened within my household, it was to be kept in my household. My mother did not and still do not like for everyone to be "all in her business." As I got older, I realized how much I did not like how situations was resolved. Keeping the conflict constricted only made the problem grow larger within the household. Everyone in my household was very strong and opinionated. Therefore, they would stick to their side of the story. There wasn't any outside voice to settle the disputes. If one would agree with the other side, then the other person would just walk around the house...show more content... Page 151 describes grace as granting forgiveness, putting aside our needs, or helping another save face when no standard says we should or must do so. Instead of being angry and aggressive, I could have been graceful and looked pass the situation. I wasn't taught how to be graceful when dealing with conflict. Now, if I had a chance to go back in time and practice grace, I would. Now, I know that every situation doesn't have to end with physical violence or hiding emotions. I learned that when there is a problem, I need to get help outside of my household. That's how I find better understanding. I have a personal mediator, which is my grandmother. A mediator works with people who are in a conflict to reach a decision but has no power to make a decision (146). With family conflicts, I tend to call my grandmother. She listen to my side, then listen to the other's side, and then speak from wisdom. When there is a situation outside of my family, I still run to my granny. She usually allow me to see things from other's perspective. Therefore I am able to have a better understanding in how a situation was constructed. I feel as if I am wiser and I learned how to handle conflicts in a more graceful Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Conflict Essay CONFLICTS AND DISPUTES ARE INEVITABLE Conflict is defined as the behaviour due to which people differ in their feelings, thought and/or actions. Collins (1995) states that the conflict is a 'serious disagreement and argument about something important' and also as 'a serious difference between two or more beliefs, ideas or interests' (cf. Kumaraswamy, 1997, p. 96). In general it is believed that conflicts are the underlying cause of disputes. In other words, dispute is a manifestation of the deep rooted conflict. A dispute is defined as 'a class or kind of conflict, which manifests itself in distinct, justifiable issues. It involves disagreement over issues capable of resolution by negotiation, mediation or third party adjudication' ...show more content... So, it is said that a conflict can exist without a dispute but a dispute cannot exist without a conflict (Spangler and Burgess, 2003). Many authors have highlighted the inevitability of conflicts on the other hand it is said that disputes can be prevented or at least can be minimized through proper management. Conflicts are ubiquitous where ever a large number of people are involved i.e. where the human relationships proliferate (Kumaraswamy, 1997). People are the principle resource for any commercial project today. Different project managers, engineers, surveyors belonging to different organizations and having different needs, goals and each of them looking to maximize their benefits are brought together to form a team. Because of these differences in the individuals the conflicts and disputes become inevitable in a project. Conflicts are generally perceived as a negative term but it has both positive and negative sides. Positive conflicts can be helpful to generate new ideas, make innovations, helps people to 'Be real' and creative. But this conflict has to be maintained so that it does not get out of control and bring about dysfunctional consequences. Conflict Conflict and negotiation in the workplace Conflict occurs with two or more people who, despite their first attempts at agreement, do not yet have agreement on a course of action, usually because their values, perspectives and opinions are contradictory in nature. Conflict can occur: 1. Within yourself when you are not living according to your values. 2. When your values and perspectives are threatened. 3. When there is discomfort from fear of the unknown or from lack of fulfillment. Usually this approach tends to worsen the conflict over time, and causes conflicts within yourself. 3. You can compete with the others. You can work to get your way, rather than clarifying and addressing the issue. Competitors love accommodators. Use this approach when you have a very strong conviction about your position. 4. Compromising. You can engage in mutual give–and–take. This approach is used when the goal is to get past the issue and move on together. 5. Collaborating. You can focus on working together. Use this approach when the goal is to meet as many current needs as possible by using mutual resources. This approach sometimes raises new mutual needs. These types of conflict can be classified into conflict over responsibility of team members, conflict over insufficient resources, conflict over interpersonal relationship and conflict of interests. In terms of conflict that exist in our group, the conflict over insufficient resources arose, as there was a slight issue on the use of materials in the second game of the team building activities. The second game of CA1, as mentioned above, involved 'protecting' the balloon from bursting as we were given different types of materials to devise a method to ensure the balloon did not burst when we release the balloon into the basket containing a needle. We may respond to conflicts based on our perceptions of the situation, not necessarily to an objective review of the facts. Our perceptions are often influenced by our life experiences, culture, values, and beliefs, and conflicts trigger strong emotions. However, if these emotions are not managed properly, the conflict won't be able to resolve conflict successfully. Thus, to allow us to better understand the conflict, first of all, we need all parties to have an open and perceptive to different opinions or ideas that we are faced with. It is true that no two minds are the same, and no two person think the same way for every single problem. Therefore, conflicting parties should stand from an unbiased point of view by all parties can allow further steps in liaising for a common agreement, compromising and Conflicts can be an opportunity for growth. When you're able to resolve conflict in a relationship, it builds trust. A sense of security is assured when the people in a relationship survive challenges and disagreements. • 8. Conflicts Conflict means a struggle or problem between two opposing groups or individuals. There are two types of conflict: internal and external conflict. An internal conflict is a struggle that is internalized and deals with choices, consequences, or emotions. An internal conflict is a man vs. self struggle. An external conflict is a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force. External conflicts are either man verses man, man verses nature, or man verses society. Various examples of internal and external conflicts can be shown in Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace," Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game," and O.Henry's, "The Gift of the Magi." Firstly, Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" shows ...show more content... He is put into a situation where he has to swim until he finds shelter. He swims, and "for a seemingly endless time he fought the sea" (Connell 42). After a while, he found an island called Ship Trap Island. So, this shows how he fought against nature. Another example of conflict in this story is when Rainsford has to fight against General Zaroff, who is an expert at hunting humans on Ship Trap Island. As Rainsford gets challenged by Zaroff, he says, "'Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer'" (49). This shows an example of another external conflict. But, this one is a man verses man conflict because Rainsford is facing a problem with another character in the story. Therefore, Rainsford faces many situations where he has to choose between life or death. Lastly, examples of conflict can be shown in "The Gift of the Magi" by O.Henry. This story is about a cute couple that is willing to do anything to buy each other Christmas presents. An internal conflict faced by Della Young, the protagonist, is when she does not have enough money to buy her husband Jim a present. All Della had was "one dollar and eighty seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas" (O. Henry 153). To get more money, Della sells her most prized possession, which is her hair. After Della and Jim finally bought their presents by selling their most prized possessions, another conflict arose. • 9. Essay about Causes and Consequences of Conflict Encountering Conflict – Secret river 'A conflict's importance lies not in its causes but in its consequences.' In today's rising society, where we experience people willing to strive to their maximum potential by any means necessary, it becomes blatantly obvious to why we often overlook the implications we inflict on others. We are sometimes aware of our actions, acting in spite or in fear, and sometimes ignorant to the situation, unaware of the consequences we deliver. The question is however – where does the importance of conflict lie – in its causes? Or in its consequences? It seems evident that there are many people will use their spite and fear and perhaps even compassion to exacerbate conflict. People all too easily become to...show more content... A question rarely easy to answer, but an important one to decipher. It would be highly ignorant to say that the consequences are the most important aspect of conflict in all cases when it is evident that the causes play just as big a part. The Australian Aboriginals themselves had to adjust to survive. They had to find a way to live in this land after they first arrived. If Aboriginals were not to continue in conflict with the land and the others they shared it with, change became a necessity. Over time they developed a harmonious way to live and prosper within the limitations of their environment – a harmony that became enshrined within their culture. Modern Society is, at an incredible rate, exploiting and using up resources, that we will not have the luxury of 40,000 years to find a new way of life in order to survive. Our society could do worse than to try and learn a little from the first Australians. One only has to look at Kate Grenville's main protagonist in 'The Secret River', William Thornhill, ending the book on his verandah, gazing wistfully out at the ridge across the river, willing an appearance by people of the Aboriginal clan he had been instrumental in displacing, and thinking the same thing. When considering the types of conflicts faced by individuals – personal conflict, interpersonal conflict and extra personal conflict, we must also acknowledge the moral dilemmas, such as racism or differences with immediate others and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

For example, a person may have said he was going to complete a task which he failed to do which caused conflict with another person or party, or maybe two people who have different ideas on who to accomplish a task may become heated.  Stages of conflict are hard to describe in detail but it usually starts with raised voices to get an opinion across which can escalate into a yelling match as one person tries to get the other person or party to agree with what he is saying. Essay on Organizational Conflict Conflict 1 Organizational Conflict: The three views Organizational Conflict: The three views Conflict 2 Organizational conflict is a state of discord caused by the actual or perceived opposition of needs, values and interests between people working together. Conflict takes many forms in organizations. There is the inevitable clash between formal authority and power and those individuals and groups affected. There are disputes over how revenues should be divided, how the work should be done, and how long and hard people should work. There are jurisdictional disagreements among individuals, departments, and between unions and management. There are subtler forms of conflict involving rivalries, jealousies, personality clashes,...show more content... From this perspective, conflict occurs as a result of malfunctioning individuals or organizations. Therefore, in order to resolve conflict, problems must be identified, causes must be analyzed, and those people or situations contributing to the conflict must be "fixed" (Kilmann & Thomas, 1978). This mechanistic view approaches conflict resolution as a logical, linear process. Robbins comments: "Although research studies now provide strong evidence to dispute that this approach to conflict reduction results in high group performance, many still evaluate conflict situations utilizing this outmoded standard" (2001, p. 384). In the 1950s the emerging human relations view of conflict began to replace the earlier traditional view. The human relations position suggests that conflict is a natural phenomenon in groups and organizations. Therefore, since it is inevitable, it must be accepted and managed. During this era, the management literature introduced the term conflict management (Nurmi & Darling, 1997); and, by the 1970s, the field of organization development, with its tool–kit of team–building interventions, began to go mainstream, thus providing organizations with new resources for dealing with conflict. Conflict 4 More recently, a third conflict school of thought has emerged, referred to as the interactionist view. This perspective

Conflict is detrimental to a group's ability to work together. Although conflict can never be completely avoided, most personality differences can be worked around if you know how to identify them, understand how they affect the group and learn methods to avoid them. Thompson, Aranda, and Robbins (2001) write about two main types of conflict. The first type of conflict is; emotional conflict, or sometimes called A–type conflict. This conflict can threaten productivity. These personality types can take over a group. They bully the other members into accepting their point of view. They can be overbearing, or use anger to overwhelm any opposition to their ideas. They can be so opinionated that no one else has a chance to speak up or get their point across. The next type of conflict is; cognitive conflict, or sometimes called C–type conflict. This conflict usually revolves around the merits of ideas or plans. Although disagreement can occur, this type of conflict can be used to stimulate creativity. Looking at a problem from different points of view can assist the whole team in problem solving. The method is to attack the idea not the person. This type of conflict usually benefits team functioning. The goal is to turn A–types personalities into C–types. There are several different ways of achieving that goal. To start with, each team member must agree on a common plan. Duties should be divided evenly and all team members must hold each Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Conflict : Conflict And Conflict Conflict is a problematic situation that occurs between interdependent people who seek different goals or means to those goals. Conflict is inevitable as relationships become closer, more personal, and more interdependent, more conflicts occur, perceived trivial or minor complaints become more significant, and feelings become more intense. Conflict has many definitions (opposing viewpoints, when opponents engage in battle, going against one another in some fashion, incompatibility between the objectives of two or more characters or forces) and approaches (avoiding, accommodating, competing, collaborating, compromising). There are five types of conflict, Value, Relationship, Interest, Data and Structural Conflict. Interpersonal conflict is...show more content... Once engaged in conversation with another, an effective conflict manager can employ general ways and specific techniques to be supportive. Power and conflict go hand and hand. It is up to the individual to decide how to handle the two. "Leaders must strive to possess a balance between conflict and power in order to sustain a high–performance working environment" (Hale, 2009, p.1). Creating and maintaining a more power balanced organization where everyone has the opportunity to contribute to increase individual's self–esteem. In a general way, people want others to like, respect, encourage, consult, include, appreciate, and reward them. They want others to ask them questions, greet them warmly, help them when needed, and make them feel safe. We can also support others in a more specific way. To do this, we need to determine what traits or characteristics the other perceives in him or her–self and point out the ones we have in common or are capable of supporting. Thus enhancing one's communication skills, also known as Data Conflict, is paramount when seeking to mediate and subsequently resolve conflict. The purpose of resolving conflict within an organization is to create a win–win situation for all involved. To this end, organizations develop a protocol to expeditiously and satisfactorily resolve conflict. Often, the protocol is known as the grievance process. • 16. Conflict Between Conflict And Conflict For this paper, I chose conflict because it is present in nearly every aspect of life, it is unavoidable, and knowing how to handle it is a valuable tool which I would like to investigate. Webster defines conflict as "A mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands", but the reality is there is no clear definition of how conflict starts, no two conflicts are the same, and they all start for different reasons over different issues. There are four types of conflict: Content Conflict – Disagreement caused by differing interpretations of the meaning of a concept or an idea. Values Conflict– Disagreements over management practices which may be value based regarding how employees should be handled and treated. Negotiation of Selves Conflict – Conflicts over how one see themselves versus how they are seen by others. Often people see themselves differently than others see them. Institutionalized conflict – Conflicts that occur due to the structure of a business or organization. Some businesses encourage conflict as a part of their decision making process. (Lamberton & Minor, 2014, p.266) Conflict in the work environment is common. Issues like self–worth, recognition, team dynamics, and compensation; all provide an incubator for conflict. The most common causes for conflict in my opinion are: competition, personality conflicts, people who choose Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In addition, it can have both negative and positive impacts for our relationship (Gudykunst, 2004). In addition the way of people approach to managing conflict is depend on culture and ethnic (Ting–Toomey, 1985). For example, Asian use avoiding, integrating and obliging to approach but European and American use dominating. In term of face and conflict, we can divide in two parts. Firstly, cultural differences in face–concerns, Moriska and Gudykunst 1994 mention that "face in collectivistic cultures is based on the interdependent self construal". In this case, Members of individualistic cultures attention to self–face maintenance more than members of collectivistic cultures, however, Members of collectivistic cultures attention to other–face more than members of individualistic culture (Ting–Toomey & Kurogi, 1998). In term of face management, face work tactics are the strategies used to solve problem between others face and self–face when conflicts are managed (Oetzel et al, 1999). In addition, the politeness is need when we do something attract to the other face (Brown & Levinson, 1987). Secondly, in term of ethnic difference in face–concerns, when people have different ethnic it can be concerns with face because people have different identity and it easy to threaten the other face (Kwan & Sodowsky, 1997). • 18. Definition Essay Conflict Conflict is a serious disagreement or argument that can happen often. The result of a conflict depends on how high the situation escalates. Me and my little brother get into conflicts pretty often over dumb things. Usually when my brother and I get into a conflict we get in trouble for fighting and get things taken away or end up getting grounded. In other instances, with my friends we stop talking for a little while and eventually get over it and start talking again. A great example of this in my life is me and my friend Quincy. Once when we were talking about my bike accident that I had like 7 months ago he said it was a gap. I said it wasn't and then we got into a conflict about it. Their fore we stopped talking for like two weeks and then Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Definition Essay On Conflict In our world conflict is an issue no human can avoid. Whether hearing about it through the news or through a trusted source, or simply just experiencing it in daily lives. Conflict in my definition is when there is a disagreement or problem at stake and an issue forms. For example a conflict can be as little as a small argument of opinions or a fight about toys between siblings, to as immense as a war starting or starvation in certain countries. Conflict can be emotional, or it can be physical, like a fight. Conflict has happened all over the world. Conflict is what starts wars and can create chaos among humans. This is similar to the disagreements that took place during a quarrel between the Native Americans and the non–natives coming into what was the Washington territory. The conflict that happened between these different cultures was both...show more content... The definition of the action to assimilate according to Merriam Webster is "to absorb into the cultural tradition of a population or group". But in the case of the Native Americans their assimilation was much more forced. The kids were taken off into boarding schools that taught them how to become like the white people or the settlers, during this they lost a majority of their culture and background, relationships with family, and even their language because whenever they tried to speak their native tongue they were beaten and punished. Each child was given a new name according to the English culture along with learning English, and even dressing like they would. These were just three of the many factors that played into the conflict between the Native Americans and the Settlers. Out of these three factors I believe that assimilation is the most important factor. I think that this is so because when the settlers attempted to assimilate the Indians the first time a major event that happened was the Whitman Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Conflict Resolution Essay A group can only be called a team if the members are actively working together toward a common goal. A team must have the capability to set goals, make decisions, solve problems, and share responsibilities. For a team to be successful, trust must be earned between its members by being consistent and reliable (Temme & Katzel, 2005). When more than one person is working on a particular task, inconsistent views or opinions commonly arise. People come from different backgrounds and live through different life experiences therefore, even when working towards a common goal, they will not always see eye to eye. Major conflict that is not dealt with can devastate a team or organization (Make Conflict Work, 2008). In some situations, conflict can...show more content... The idea of conflict under this view brings to mind chaos, heated emotion, and high stress. The traditional mindset requires taking all necessary steps to prevent and remove the source of the conflict that may be detrimental to the team. The human relations view understands that conflict is inevitable and part of the natural process of interactions. The human relations view is a more neutral outlook, which allows conflict and is tolerant of its presents. One that comes from this perspective expects conflict in a team setting and is more likely to resolve the issue when it arises rather than trying to eliminate the source. The interactionist view considers conflict to be energizing and helpful in keeping constructive discussion going. The interactionist view is a positive view that encourages opinions and expression of all members of an association. Conflict is considered a positive influence towards change. Causes for Conflict Barbara Bowes discusses three major causes for conflict: different interests/goals, conflicting values, and interpersonal styles (2008). Even though a team has the same ultimate goal, the intermediate steps to reach this goal may be unparallel. Imagine if Ray Kroc, fast–food restaurateur, and a gourmet chef teamed up to open a restaurant. What conflicts might transpire? The team may have the same definitive goal in mind, but the two would more than likely be dealing with the issue of quality versus convenience. The second Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. Conflict Resolution Essay Conflict Resolution What does conflict resolution mean to me? Conflict resolution is when an impartial or neutral person puts a plan into action to resolve and settle issues within an organization or a team. In the business world today a great amount of focus is being placed on employees working as team unit to increase new ideas, distribute more job responsibilities among a larger group, and most important create a unified front and camaraderie. Along with advantages there are always disadvantages, wherever there are teams, there is a chance for conflict. Conflict is almost a guarantee. As long as team members possess the ability to think independently, there will always be a difference of opinion. Conflict...show more content... It is extremely vital to the livelihood of a team for the team members to be able use conflict resolutions or reach out to another individual who has conflict resolution skills. Is conflict constructive or destructive? Conflict can be good for a team if the members involved in the conflict learn some type of lesson about the issue. It also can create a solution for future problems with different individuals. It can create a sense of unity and fresh ideas on ways to resolve the conflict. Conflict can also be a very destructive force to an organization if after all is said and done, conflict continues without a resolution. It creates chaos instead of camaraderie and divides teams or different groups of people. What causes conflict? There are numerous reasons that conflict may arise within a team. A team with many different people includes many different personalities, cultures, values, attitudes, needs, expectations, etc. In order to resolve conflict it is very important to follow a few steps: 1. Analyze the reason for the disagreement. 2. Create several solutions or options for all parties involved. 3. Make sure all involved agree on the solution. 4. Implement the solution immediately, time is of the essence. 5. Follow up on the situation Get more content on HelpWriting.net
