INTRODUCTION
Cauterization is a medical practice or technique of burning a part of
body to remove or close of a part of it.
Cauterization is when electric current is passed through a metal
instrument called an electrocautery device. The device can be in the
form of a hand held pencil-like instrument or a larger instrument with
interchangeable tips. The tip of the device is heated by the electric
current, which causes the tissue to coagulate, sealing blood vessels
and preventing bleeding.
DEFINITION
“Electrocautery, also known as thermal cautery, refers to a
process in which a direct or alternating current is passed
through a metal wire electrode, generating heat to cut or
coagulate tissue”
type of thermal cautery
• In this technique, a single active electrode is
used to deliver the electric current to the
tissue. The current flows from the active
electrode through the tissue to a large
neutral electrode placed elsewhere on the
patient's body.
monopoler
cauterization
• : In bipolar cautery, two electrodes are used,
both of which are placed in close proximity to
each other. The electric current flows
between these two electrodes, heating and
cauterizing the tissue in between.
Bipoler
cautrization
Indication
1. they use electricity or chemicals to burn tissue in order to close a
wound.
2. Cervical erosion.
3. Some malignant condition .
4. Chronic cervicitis.
5. endometrial ablation
6. in many surgical procedure.
It may also be done to remove harmful tissue
Contraindications
1. Patient with electrical pacemaker or other implant electrical
devices.
2. Pregnant women.
3. Area near vital structure.
4. patient with compromise wound healing.
5. hypersensitivity
PROCEDURE
1. Prepare the patient
2. Local or general anesthesia
should be provided
3. Placement of grounding pad
on the patient body
4. Selection of Cautery machine
1. To reduce risk of infection
2. To ensure pt comfortable
during procedure
3. To complete the electric
current
4. For specific surgical
procedure or desired
outcome
Procedure rational
5. Application for electric current
6. hemostasis and tissue
manipulation
5. The electric current generate
heat that coagulate blood vessels
and , cut tissue
6.helps in achieving hemostasis
by sealing blood vessels and
preventing bleeding. It also
allows the surgeon to manipulate
tissue and achieve the desired
surgical outcome, such as
removing a tumor or cauterizing
a bleeding vessel.
7. Monitoring and control: 7. Throughout the procedure, the
surgeon carefully monitors the
tissue response to the electric
cautery. They adjust the settings
and technique as needed to
ensure precise and controlled
tissue manipulation.
COMPLICATIONS
1. Infection.
2. Burn.
3. Tissue damage.
4. Pain and discomfort.
5. nerve damage.
NURSING MANAGEMENT
1. Pre-operative care:
i. Nurses should ensure that the patient is adequately
prepared for the procedure.
ii. This includes obtaining informed consent, verifying the
patient's identity and surgical site, and providing pre-
operative instructions such as fasting guidelines.
2. Intra operative care:
i. Nurses play a crucial role in assisting the surgeon during the
procedure.
ii. They should ensure that the necessary equipment and supplies are
available, including the electric cautery device.
iii. Nurses should also monitor the patient's vital signs, administer
anesthesia if required, and assist with positioning the patient for
optimal access to the surgical site.
3. Post-operative care:
i. After the procedure, nurses should closely monitor the patient for
any signs of complications such as bleeding, infection, or pain.
ii. They should assess the surgical site for any signs of redness,
swelling, or drainage.
iii. Nurses should provide appropriate wound care and administer
medications as prescribed, such as antibiotics or pain relievers.
iv. They should also educate the patient on post-operative care
instructions, including wound care, activity restrictions, and signs of
potential complications that require medical attention
