2. The first step I had to take in order to make my Film poster was to take good quality pictures for it.
However before taking these pictures I had to think about the costume that my model would be wearing. I wanted the costume to reflect
the mood/theme of our movie which is crime, betrayal, rape and many other negative connotations that the movie may have. Rape is one
of the main themes therefore I wanted my model/actress to have a torn, black t-shirt on to not only reflect that theme, but to represent
her feelings and emotions and her psyche. She’s torn inside however the black could also show her strength that she gains later on.
I took a variety of pictures so that I could have a good range of images to choose from. I wanted a close up of my actress as I wanted to her
face to be the main focus. Using a close up image will reveal to the audience what kind of emotion she is showing and it also reveals any
small detail that one wouldn’t realise if the image was zoomed out.
After taking pictures and selecting the best shot that I took, I opened it on photoshop and began to edit the image. I started off by filtering
the image to give it a dark and lightly distorted look. The reason behind doing this is that, the whole idea of the movie is that the
antagonist is a detective however he’s also behind the crime that he is investigating, he has distorted the minds of those who trust him
and that is the reason why I used a filter to make it look distorted, and unclear.
I lowered the brightness levels of the image to give the poster a dark look to suggest the dark side to the narrative of this movie.
The editing process wasn’t complicated as the image that I used was a great picture, therefore all I had to do was add the title of the
movie, the billing block, the production logo and other logos and of course the names of the actors.
I think my poster follows the conventions of a movie poster as I looked at other movie posters for inspiration.
How?
The poster must be eye catching and captivating to the audience
There must be a main focal image that will draw in the audience
The title is displayed in a large, eye-catching font
The poster usually, clearly defines the film’s genre
There is usually an indication of when the film is being released – either a date or ‘Coming Soon’
I think my film poster ticks all of these boxes which is why I think it’s rather conventional.

3. To create my film magazine I used to software ‘photoshop’ which is
the same software that I used to make my film poster. I chose to
create a actor based front cover magazine, which reflects the actual
actor/actress rather than the character that he/she plays. I used the
male leading actor of our movie because I felt as though my product
needed something different. At first I had created a character based
front cover magazine, and it was image of the leading female
character. Comparing my first attempt at making the front cover
magazine to my second attempt, I’d say that the front cover looks
much more professionally but also it has a USP, which is the fact that
it is actor based.
MAGAZINE
4. 1. Here are a few of the many pictures that I took of my model. The aim
of this shoot was to get a good close up of the model which explains why
they all look quite similar. In some of the images I took, she was looking
away from the camera, however in most of the images she’s looking
directly at the camera.
2. I prefer the images of her looking directly into the camera because it
is a form of direct mode of address, meaning that the reader/ person
viewing this poster will feel as though she is watching them and it’s
very affective as it grabs the audience’s attention.
3. The top that she is wearing is a reflection of her pain. It’s torn but not
completely torn and this represents the strength that she has as she
is not completely broken.
4. Half of her face is covered by her hair and this was done to
emphasise the title ‘duplicity’. Duplicity means deception, the title
reveals something about the movie and so does the main image of
the poster. It gives a sense of deceit and two-facedness.

5. The narrative suggests that James the detective, is a deceitful man who
betrays the trust of a young woman.
Here are a few of the images that I took for my film magazine front
cover. Having the two characters hugging makes it look like the two
main characters have a romantic relationship which contradicts the
narrative of the story.
The aim at first was to use a character based image, which would be the
image in the bottom left corner, however I then changed my mind
because firstly the image didn’t exactly correlate with the storyline but
also I wanted to subvert the conventions of a movie magazine, so I
decided to create an actor based front cover magazine.
I used an image quite similar to the image In the top left corner. The
“male gaze” is a term that is commonly used among feminists arguing
the role of a female for the sexual objectification of a male spectator.
Although the male gaze is a feminist theory, this theory links to the
image that I chose for my magazine. The actors shirt is unbuttoned in
order to draw the readers attention, most likely a female reader.

6. Using Photoshop to create my magazine wasn’t
exactly a challenge this year as I used this
software last year for my AS ancillary tasks.
Compared to my first draft of my movie
magazine this new development of my
magazine looks much more professional and
follows the conventions of a real media product.
I made many changes to my magazine in order
to make sure that it followed conventions of a
real movie magazine, for example big sell lines,
a masthead, a barcode etc.
7. Masthead:The name of the magazine
displayed in a specific typeface. This is the
visual branding of the title and is often done in
a specially designed typeface to be easily
recognised and unique. The title or logotype -
often these days called a masthead - is usually
used on the contents page inside as well as the
front cover, and as a logo for advertising and
branding purposes.
Sell line: Short, sharp description of the title's
main marketing point (for Cosmopolitan: 'The
world's No 1 magazine for young women') or
perhaps setting out its editorial philosophy,
such as FHM's 'funny, sexy, useful'
Barcode: Standard bar code used by
retailers, displayed on UK magazines since
1988. Includes publication date and price.
Special subscriber covers can omit this
Name of the actor: ‘Lamar
Wilkinson’ as his shirt is
unbuttoned this magazine
would attract female readers
as this is an example of the
‘male gaze’ (the opposite)
Main Image:The photos on a
cover of a magazine are often
medium shot.This is so the
main features face is the
focus of the magazine.
8. As every film poster should have the following…
1. Movie title
2. Main image
3. Name of the actors
4. Billing block
5. Tag line
And there are other forms and conventions, however these are the main convention's and my poster conforms to
these conventional themes.
Movie title:The name of the movie is ‘Duplicity’ and it is written in the font ‘distortion’ which reflects are particular
character in our trailer which is why we chose this font. Its written in bold and it’s very big therefore automatically it
will grab the viewers attention.
Main image: the main image is eye-catching as the model is looking directly into the eyes of the reader, again
grabbing their attention.
Name of the actors:The names of the actors are in the top left and right corner of the poster as it is in many other
real movie posters.
Billing block:. Information given in billing usually consists of the companies, actors, directors, producers, and other
crew members. And conventionally that is placed at the bottom of the poster.
Tag line: our tag line is ‘trust in the law’ and I placed it under the movie title because although it’s small, it’ll be hard
to miss as it’s the next thing the reader could possibly see after reading the title.
