3. Introduction
• Uttar pradesh is the largest state of India.
• It was created on 1st April 1937 as the united province, and was renamed
Uttar Pradesh in 1950.
• The state has 403 Assembly seats, 80 Parliamentary seats, 31 Rajysabha
seats.
• With this electoral strength ,UP plays the most crucial role in presidential
election.
• UP plays a Key role in economic development of India as it tops the chart
in most populous state of India.
• This is the reason that the UP state assembly election are always the most
important among all the states.
4. Overview of Election
• Uttar Pradesh went to polls between 11th February to 8th March 2017 in 7
phases.
• The main contenders in 2017 assembly polls BSP, SP, Congress and BJP.
• The BJP recorded a historic victory winning 312 seats in house of 403.
• The Congress and SP alliance could managed to win only 52 seats, where
the BSP won 18 seats.
• Yogi Aadityanath, A five time member of parliament, was sworn as the
chief minister on 19th march along with his 46 minister.
5. #1 Leadership
• Leadership played a crucial role in this election for every contender.
• BJP, under the strong leadership of PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah
succeed in grabbing the sweeping victory in election.
It was well accepted and their tireless efforts helped to motivate the cadre
and voters.
• Where SP even being the first runner in state initially, failed because of a
divided and uncertain leadership.
• BSP and congress faced the acceptance issue in the multicultural state like
UP.
7. #2 Positioning
• Positioning of the product in market wisely is important.
• BJP played the right card at right time, all the leaders of BJP addressed the
issues which matters to people such as law and order issues, selective
appeasement, illegal slaughterhouses, eve teasing, dominancy of yadav
community in administrative posts and most importantly the so called
“Parivar-Vad”
• Then they projected themselves as the only sollution of all this problems,
they even mentioned it in their menifesto, be it formation of Anti-Romeo
squad or immediate ban on illegal slaughterhouses.
• It helped BJP to convert the crowd into votes.

• Conflicts in Samajwadi Party were one of the major reasons behind the
embarrassing debacle of the socialist party in its own state.
• These conflicts created a feeling of mistrust and uncertainty in the party
cadre and its traditional voters.
• It helped the opposition parties to strike into its support base and attack its
integrity among the voters.
• Credibility of Mulayam singh and Akhilesh yadav failed in the general
mindset of public and its impact resulted into the fall of the party in state
election.

• In the initial stage of the poll campaign, Congress and SP both denied any
possibility of an alliance, and congress even announced its CM candidate

But after a while Akhilesh yadav forged an electoral alliance with Rahul
Gandhi “to keep communal forces at Bay”.
• But it didn't work out because it conveyed a message of Desperation and
affected the Credibility of both the party’s words.
• Immediate shift in the strategy created an awful situation for both the
leaders who initially criticized each other.
• Opposition took it as an opportunity to criticize and troll the alliance, and
specially the congress who gave a slogan in initial stage of poll
campaigning “27 Saal, UP behaal”

• BJP’s main strength is its Top-Down Approach, where the top leaders
worked to mobilize support for the BJP.
• That is why, BJP once again banked on the popularity of PM Narendra
Modi.
• For UP election, all publicity material such as posters, banners carried
pictures of PM Narendra modi and Amit Shah,
• PM Narendra Modi did almost 24 rallies including the Storming Road
show of Varanasi.
• This is different from RSS’s bottom up approach where cadre worked to
mobilize support for BJP.

• Demonetization was a crucial reform for Indian economy but also
politically a very risky step taken by BJP government.
• But BJP managed it to improve its “intolerant against corruption”
government image.
• Demonetization was seen as a big hurdle in the way of BJP as it was said
that many farmers and small traders will punish it for the hardship they
faced.
• Surprisingly, as the voting day approached, BJP pulled the farmers towards
itself promising loan wavers for them.

• Both these were big leaders of these parties, and it create an disappointment
in BSP and Congress cadre over party leadership and it helped BJP.

modi also mentioned himself as adopted son of UP.
• Narendra modi’s Dussehra celebration in Lucknow was a try to give the
Election campaign a fresh start.
• It gave enough time to BJP for establishing a general Idea that it wouldn’t
let any stone unturned to win UP.
