 Information and communication technology
(ICT) is an extensional term for Information
Technology (IT) that stresses the role of
unified communications and integration of
telecommunications (telephone lines and
wireless signals) and computers as well as
necessary enterprise software, middleware
,storage, and audiovisual system, that enable
user to access, store, transmit, and
manipulate information.

 Acquisition, storage, manipulation,
management, transmission or reception of
data or information.
 Real time access to information.
 Easy availability of updated data.
 Connecting geographically dispersed regions.
 Wider range of communication media.
 ICT is pervasive and cross-cutting.
 From personal use to business and
government.

 ICT reduces transaction costs.
 ICT enhances efficiency.
 ICT reduces the need for intermediaries.
 ICT links consumers directly to producers.
 ICT allows user to acquire products and
services directly.
 ICT is global.
 ICT reduces cultural barriers.
 ICT reduces linguistic barriers.
 ICT enhances student knowledge and skill.
ICT plays a catalytic role in enhancing
learning in classroom and beyond. It
enhances scope of education by facilitating
mobile learning and inclusive education. It
facilitates research and scholarly
communication. In today’s era the use of ICT
is seen from the very initial stage of
schooling , schools are transforming
themselves into smart schools . ICT is useful
right from classroom to the administration of
the educational institutions.

 ICT enhances teaching and learning
environment .
 ICT enables self-paced learning through various
tools such as assignment, computer etc as a
result of this the teaching learning enterprise
has become more productive and meaningful.
 ICT enables e-learning.
 Edusat technology has become very powerful
media for interactive participation of experts
and learners ad it reaches the unreachable.
 A person from village can also refer the
latest information and research every day.
 Television broadcast is one of the best
communication media to educate students ,
farmers, sportsperson.
 The difficult experiments, advanced surgery
for medical students etc can be viewed.
 LCD projectors can be used for effective
training.
 The man power problem , the human
mistakes can be avoided by online exams.

Here are some characteristics that makes
ICT in education a prominent
communication tool.
 It offers the wide variety of services.
 It is reliable and provides interactive
learning experiences.
 It is flexible and provides comfortable
teaching as well as learning.
 It motivates students to learn.
 It facilitates communication and promotes
creativity.
 It also provides access to digital library
where information can be retrieved and
stored beyond textbook.
The use of ICT in education adds value to
teaching and learning, by enhancing the
effectiveness of both teaching and learning.
It adds a dimension to learning which was
not available earlier. After the inception of
ICT in schools, students found learning in
technology-enhanced learning more easy,
stimulating and engaging than in an old
traditional classroom environment.
It is not only useful for teachers and
students it provides equal opportunities to
the parents as well to participate in their
children’s education effectively. 9
