4. STP’s can be a best set-up to prevent
water pollution.
Municipality can provide STP’s to more
cities.
STP’s remove harmful bacteria's and
other organic wastes, then the water is
disposed off into lakes or rivers.
It has 3 steps:
A. PRIMARY TREATMENT
• This step helps in removing large
sized particles & suspends the
undissolved solid waste,
• This step is aka BIOLOGICAL METHOD,
in which: water passes through
screening, grit chamber, settling
tank, inactivated sludge digester.

5. B. SECONDARY
TREATMENT
• Effluent taken from primary treatment is
now passed into an activated sludge
treatment chamber.
• In this process, activated growth of
bacteria takes place aerobically.
• These bacteria feed on the organic sewage
waste to break it into simpler inorganic
waste.
6. C. TERTIARY
TREATMENT • The water is precipitated and then
transferred into this step.
a. Nitrogen Stripping
b. Carbon Absorption
c. Chlorination
8. a. Nitrogen stripping:
In this process, nitrates and phosphates are removed
b. Carbon absorption:
This is a carbon active filtration process. Here, carbon(C) chlorine(Cl), lead(Pb)
and other organic chemicals are removed from water as they can cause
poisoning in marine life.
c. Chlorination:
Chlorine is added again
9. For eutrophication
1. Wastes in water should be treated before they are disposed in
rivers, lakes or oceans.
2. Bacterial growth in excess to reduce the amount of nutrients
+ algal growth.
3. Phosphorous(P) is removed by precipitation + Nitrogen(N) is
removed by biological nitrification/air stripping of nitrates.
10. BY recycling
1. Domestic and agricultural wastes are filled in a tank for few days
2. The aerobic environment is provided in the tank for bacteria's to grow
rapidly
3. These bacteria then feeds on the organic wastes + check on algal bloom.
4. The water that is remained is used in irrigation or electricity production
5. For e.g. Aeration Lagoons
