2. Overview
• The Brazilian Computer Society (SBC)
maintains a structure of Thematic Groups
(GT) that join SBC members with common
interests
• SBC provides three types of GTs organized
in a hierarchical structure:
• Major Areas (Grandes Áreas - GA)
• Special Commissions (Comissões Especiais - CE)
• Interest Groups (Grupos de Interesse - GIs)

3. Major Areas (GA)
• A Major Area (Grande Área - GA)
• Represents a group of Special Commissions (Comissões Especiais – CE) with a
thematic intersection
• 5 Major Areas
• GA1. Computing Systems
• GA2. Software Systems
• GA3. Computing Techniques and Technologies
• GA4. Computing Applications
• GA5. Data and Information Management
3
4. Special Commissions (CE)
• Special Commissions (Comissões Especiais - CEs)
• Join members with common interests in a Computing subarea
• Each Special Commission organizes its own annual symposium and general
meetings
• A SBC member can join to any CE
• A CE can be linked to one or more Major Area (GA)
• Conditions to create a CE
• Requirement from at least 50 SBC members from 10 different institutions
• A steering committee and a coordinator
• A CE is an evolution of a GI (3 years of maturation)
4
5. Interest Group (GI)
• Conditions to create an Interest Group (Grupo de Interesse – GI)
• Requirement from at least 10 SBC members from 3 different institutions
• A GI can be linked to one or more Special Commission(s)
• A GI needs the approval of the associated CE and of the SBC Council
• A GI needs to organize an annual or biennial workshop in the event associated
to the corresponding CE
• A coordinator reports the GI activities to the corresponding CE
• Exceptionally, a GI can be independent of a CE. In this case it is
directly linked to a GA or to the Events and Special Commission
Director Board

7. Cloud Computing Interest Group
• Requirement of at least 10 SBC members from 3 different institutions
• motivation to create the group
• definition of the workshop
• SBC members and institutions
• coordinator
• Cloud Computing is crosscutting to several subareas
• linked to several CEs?
• independent of a CE, linked to a GA or to the Director Board?
