Dr. C.V Raman
Profession -- Indian Physicist
BIRTH DATE: 7 November 1888
BIRTH PLACE: Thiruvanaikoil, Tiruchirappalli, India
DIED: 21 November 1970 at Bengaluru, India
Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman ( dr. C.V Raman )
was an Indian physicist known for his work in the field of
light scattering. Using a spectrograph that he developed,
he and his student K. S. Krishnan discovered that when
light travels through a transparent material, the deflected
light changes its wavelength and frequency.
WHAT MAKES HIM SO SPECIAL?
∞ One of Raman's interests was on the scientific basis of
musical sounds. He worked out the theory
of transverse vibration of bowed string
instruments based on superposition of velocities.
∞ His first phenomenal discovery of the physics of light
was the blue colour of seawater.
AWARDS
∞ Curzon Research Award in 1912
∞ Woodburn Research Medal 1913
∞ Matteucci Medal in 1928
∞ Nobel Prize in Physics 1930
∞ Hughes Medal of the Royal Society in 1930
∞ Franklin Medal in 1941
∞ Bharat Ratna in in 1954
∞ Lenin Peace Prize in 1957
WHAT IS HE KNOWN FOR?
∞ the Raman effect, in which light that passes through a
material is scattered and the wavelength of the
scattered light is changed because it has caused an
energy state transition in the material's molecules.
