3. Stages of Technology Adoption
Globally, schools are experiencing a growth spurt that is both difficult and inevitable.
Technology integration is what I am referring to. Perhaps your class uses a COW
(Computer on Wheels), cart once per week, or every student at your school has an iPad.
Administrators are threatening to make the scary statement "going paperless." No matter
what level of technology integration we have, all of us seem to be in some form of
transition towards new technology. It is a sad fact that many adults have difficulty
adapting to new technology, no matter how many professional training sessions or tools
they are given. The new school year is approaching with full awareness that students will
hack into the media and make their own wicked uses of it before we, as teachers, can
even turn it on. This problem can be solved easily. We can learn from our students and
take their advice. To be successful in the technological race, we must quickly get over the
obstacles of fear, trepidation and distrust.
4. Be brave and embrace new technology
Similar to the 5 Stages for Loss and Grief all people, not just adults, experience
predictable reactions when faced with new technology. You can move faster by
understanding that all people go through these stages. It is possible to learn from
your students how to turn fear into excitement, and eventually acceptance.
5. Denial
Teachers work hard to improve their craft. Each year, we
make small changes to our lesson plans and classroom
management systems to improve our effectiveness. It can be
quite shocking to hear administrators announce a sudden
and dramatic change such as 1:1 technology integration and
paperless classes. Each student uses a different device
whether it's a tablet, a phone, or a computer. Teachers will
feel an immediate reaction to the news. Most teachers will
experience an automatic reaction to the news: "This is not
going to work!"
6. Bargaining
They can put it in my classroom, but not make me use it! You might tell yourself you will only learn the minimum. The technology
will be used by your principal to observe your class. Or you might use it during the first week of school. After that, you can return
to your routines. In this instance, bargaining is not a bad thing. Bargaining can help you get the device. Technology enthusiasts can
say, "I'll give it a try but it won't work for my needs," tell yourself, as a teacher that you will give it a shot. You can always stop
using it if you don't like it. However, it will allow you to give yourself permission to test it without taking on too much risk.
7. Acceptance
You will feel more confident with the new technology the faster you
can get through the previous stages. Acceptance is when you accept
the technology and are ready to incorporate it into your lesson
plans.
Each person moves at their own pace through each stage of
technology adoption. You can overcome your initial fears and move
faster by being aware of the fact that there will be some resistance.
We don't have the ability to control new programs or educational
reforms in schools, but we do have the ability to control how we
respond. We can use our energy more productively if we get past
fear. All the best for your school's plans for next year. It's possible.
Even if you "go paperless", it's possible to handle it!
