Mid Term Exam Part 1 Origins. Why did slavery emerge in the British North American colonies? Why did it displace indentured servitude? How is slavery related to race? After the establishment of settler towns such as Jamestown, the production of cash crops such as tobacco became popular. During the early period of the cash crop farming, indentured servants were the main labor force. However, most plantation owners began seeing these servants as costly. When Dutch traders brought the first slaves to North America in 1619, the plantation owners saw the cheap labor as a boost to their profits. Thus from that period onwards, the use of slaves in these plantations became the order of business Slavery displaced indentured slavery for three main reasons. First of all, the introduction of slaves into the Americas by Dutch travelers offered a cheap and alternative labor force for the plantation workers. Secondly, with the transatlantic passage becoming more and more affordable, more immigrants from Europe came into the new world. Thus, with more and more immigrants come in and finding alternative means of income, the demand for indentured servants declined, wage bill rose and the cost of employing an indentured servant became higher and was less preferred over slavery. Lastly, as the new world become more organized and state like, laws were passed against bound servitude. By the mid-1800s, indentured servitude was outlawed in the United States. During the commencement of slavery in the United States, the whites believed in an inherent superiority over the black slaves. To the white settlers, the savage Africans were entitled to slavery. In fact, white settlers believed that they were doing the Africans a great deal of favor. Therefore, the fact that slavery was mostly restricted to the black people, was based purely in ideological beliefs that the African race were inferior and bound to serve the whites. End.How did Slavery cause the American Civil War? How did the war change from being a war to preserve the Union to a war to destroy slavery? After President Abraham Lincoln was elected into office on the republican ticket, the Southern States sought to Secede as they believed that they Lincoln administration would eventually pass laws abolishing slavery. In 1860, several states seceded from the union forming the confederacy and attacked government positions at fort Sumter starting off the civil war. The war’s transformation from a fight for the union to a fight against slavery progressed slowly throughout the conflict. With more and more slavery escaping from their Southern owners, more and more Northerners begun compassion to these slaves and pushed for emancipation of these slaves. In1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Final proclamation of Emancipation changing the purpose of the war to include freedom to the slaves in the Southern Confederacy.
