Cosmetology, Barbering or Esthetics: Which One is Right For You?
If you have always had a flair
for the artistic and you love to
help people, then you could be
a perfect fit for cosmetology
school. Most people do not
realize that the field of beauty
is not just one of skill. You must
also have patience, attention to
detail and be able to
communicate well. Once the
decision to attend school is
made, there remains but one question: Should you study cosmetology,
barbering or esthetics? And what is the difference? As you will see, these
jobs have evolved over the years.
Cosmetology
Cosmetology is the art of helping someone look their best. Cosmetology has
been around for thousands of years. Ancient Egypt is known for it’s eyeliner,
lipstick and wigs. Ancient China considered beautiful nails a sign of
desirability. Both of these cultures utilized apprenticeship to keep their upper
class and royals looking desirable and thus was born the first cosmetologist.
Times have drastically changed and modern cosmetologists are educated in
the latest technologies in their field. Cosmetologists of today are men and
women who have a passion to give people confidence through how they
look. Cutting, styling, perming, coloring facials and skin care, manicures and
pedicures, hair removal and eyelash extensions are some of the areas you
can expect to study if you choose the path of cosmetology.

Barbering
Barbering is actually one of the oldest professions in the world. The barber
role has been dated back to 6000 BC. The ancient barbers were often called
barber-surgeons and were some of the most respected members of society.
Their services often included hair and beard trimming, medicine, dentistry
and surgery. Don’t worry if the sight of blood makes you queasy, modern
day barbers leave the dentistry and medicinal practices to the professionals.
A modern day barber licensed in Missouri will be able to do everything a
cosmetologist can with the exception of nails and waxing. As a barbering
student you will learn skills that will prepare you for licensure and the career
that follows. Skills that one might expect to be studying includes; cuts with
shears and razor for men, women and children, shaving, design and styling
and clipper cutting. A barber student will also learn perms and straightening,
facials and skin care, and coloring.
Esthetics
The field of esthetics is often times more of a mystery to the general
population. Aesthetics is the philosophical field of beauty and artistic taste.
Modern day esthetics comes from this field. Cleopatra is known for her use
of milk and honey to care for her skin. Like barbering and cosmetology,
esthetics has a long history of practice.
Modern estheticians have more tools and products at their disposal than the
Queen of the Nile. Pursuing the field of esthetics means that you will be
ready to launch your career in one of the fastest growing industries in the
world. You will learn about custom spa facials, machine facials,
