Paraphernalia

Identify caregiving tools, equipment and paraphernalia applicable to the specific

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner is expected to classify equipment, tools, and
paraphernalia according to types and functions.
INTRODUCTION
Caregiving is providing care for the physical and emotional needs of a family
member or a friend at home. Being a future caregiver, one of your most important
tasks is to make sure that he/she uses the right equipment, tools, or paraphernalia that
is applicable to a specific job. You must have a knowledge with the different tools and
equipment that you will use when you are already in the health care profession.
LET’S UNDERSTAND
I. Tools, Equipment, and Paraphernalia Used in Meal Preparation
Airpot - holds liquid to maintain heat or coldness.
Blender - mix, puree, or emulsify food and other substances

Coffee Maker - brews hot coffee automatically.
Chopping Board - a flat, wooden, or plastic board used for cutting
meat or vegetables.
Electric Knife - use for slicing food that requires less physical effort
and makes neater slices.
Electric Can Opener - used to open canned goods with ease and
accuracy.
Food Processor - used to slice, dice, or whip food ingredients.
Food Tongs - an instrument for grasping and holding food.
Ladle - a long-handled spoon for serving food.

Microwave Oven - an oven that uses microwave to cook or heat
food.
Stove - utilized electricity/gas to supply heat to be used for
cooking or reheating.
II. Tools, Equipment, and Paraphernalia for Cleaning, Washing, and Ironing
Bottle Sterilizer - used in destructing microorganisms in
containers through boiling.
Broom - used for sweeping dirt
Clothes Hanger - used to hang garments on.
Dishwasher - a mechanical device for cleaning dishes,
eating utensils and pots

Dryer - removes moisture through ventilation or heat.
Dustpan - used for scooping dust.
Duster - used in removing dirt and dust.
Flat Iron - used along with an ironing board, to iron or press
clothing, fabric or draperies.
Ironing Board - used as a working surface for ironing.
Laundry/Sorting Basket - used for holding dirty clothes for
washing or wet clothes for drying.
Vacuum Cleaner - used for cleaning floors, carpets, and furniture
by suction.
Washing Machine - used for washing clothes and linen.

III. Tools, Equipment, and Paraphernalia for Taking Vital Signs
BP Apparatus Aneroid (sphygmomanometer) - It is aneroid unit
that is mercury free and consists of a cuff that can be applied with
one hand for self-testing.
BP Apparatus Mercurial (sphygmomanometer) - It is mercury-
based unit that has a manually inflatable cuff attached by tubing
to the unit that is calibrated in millimeters of mercury.
BP Apparatus Digital (sphygmomanometer) - It is digital unit that
is mercury free and consists of a cuff that can be applied with one
hand for self-testing and a valve that inflates and deflates
automatically with the data displayed on the LCD
Stethoscope - an instrument which is used for listening to the
action of the heart, lungs, etc.
Thermometer - A thermometer is an instrument for measuring
temperature.
