3. MEN’S TENNIS
Fan favorites dominate the game.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
• Reigning #1 ranked men’s player, Novak Djokovic, defeated
world’s #2 player, Andy Murray, in straight sets in the final of
January’s Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the
2016 season. It was a rematch of 2015’s Australian Open final, in
which Djokovic defeated Murray in 4 sets.
• Djokovic has now won 3 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments,
including the 2016 Australian Open and 2015’s Wimbledon and
U.S. Open. He is considered one of the greatest players of all
time, having won 11 Grand Slam singles titles and the Bronze
medal in Men’s Singles at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
• Djokovic lost the 2015 French Open final to Swiss player Stan
Wawrinka. The French Open, a tournament held on courts with
slower clay surfaces, is the only Grand Slam tournament that
Djokovic has never won; he has lost in its finals three times.

4. WOMEN’S TENNIS
Williams v. Sharpova – the ubiquitous rivalry lives on.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
• Reigning #1 ranked player Serena Williams ended the 2015 season
named Women’s Tennis Association Player of the Year. In 2015,
Williams won 5 WTA titles, including 3 Grand Slam tournaments; she
also led the WTA in prize money with $10.5 million.
• Williams is considered one of the best, if not the best, to play the
game. She has won 4 Olympic Gold medals and 34 Grand Slam
titles, including 21 in singles, making her second all-time in the Open
Era by one title to Steffi Graf (22 titles).
• The 2016 WTA season started with a shocker when German
Angelique Kerber upset Williams in January’s Australian Open final, 6-
4, 3-6, 6-4. Kerber was the tournament 7-seed and had fought back
from match point in an earlier round.
• The Australian Open loss ended Williams’ streak of 8-straight Grand
Slam finals wins; however she still enters the next 2 Grand Slam
tournaments as the reigning champ, the French Open in May, and
Wimbledon in June.
Women’s tennis stars attract fans on and off the court.
