SYDNEY, Australia— The authoritiesinPapuaNew GuineaconfrontedasylumseekersonThursdayinsidea
controversial detentioncenteronManusIsland,orderinghundredsof detaineestoleave and destroying
theirbelongingsinanattemptto enda standoff at the camp that hasdrawn internationalscrutinyto
Australia’soffshore detentionpolicy.
By earlyafternoon,dozensof the asylum seekershadbeenremovedfromthe campand placedonthree
minibuses,saidrefugee advocateswhowere atthe scene. 1 B
Abdul AzizMuhamat,a Sudanese asylumseekerinthe camp,saidthe mentakenawayhad beentargeted
because theywere separatedfroma largergroup andwere easiertoremove.“The problemwas,those men
splitupfrom the restof us,”he said.
The Papua NewGuineaauthorities’aggressivemove,whichAustralia’simmigrationministerconfirmedwas
takingplace,representedanescalationof the conflictoverthe Manuscenter.It comesthree weeksafter
Australiaofficiallyclosedthe camponOct. 31, cuttingoff electricity,foodandwaterashundredsof the
detainees,all of whomare men,refusedtoleave.

such migrantwill everbe allowedtosettle inAustralia.
Securityforcesstormedthe camparound7 a.m. Wednesdayandbegantearingthroughthe men’sshelters
and makeshiftwatertanks,before announcingonaloudspeakerthatthe menhadto leave foralternative
facilitiesonthe island,detaineessaid. 3 ______
Mr. Boochani saidthe authoritieswere confiscatingmobile phonesafteranumberof refugees
photographedandfilmedthe episode,makingitavailabletointernational newsmediaoutlets.
“At thismomentthatI’m talkingwithyou,I’minthe toilet,”saidMr.Boochani,whohas regularlyposted
Twittermessagesandwrittenarticlesfromthe camp.“If I go outside,they’lltake myphone.It’spossible
that if I go out,they’ll arrestme. I’monlyworriedthatIwon’tbe able towrite and tweet.”
The asylumseekers’defiance waspartlyanact of protest,butit was alsomotivatedbycomplaintsthat
alternative facilitieswere notready.Manyof the men have alsosaidtheyfearedtheywould be attackedor
intimidatedbylocal residentswhohave resistedAustralia’sattempttomove themclosertothe island’s
largestcity,Lorengau.
On Thursday,Australia’simmigrationminister,PeterDutton,accusedthe detaineesof ruiningthe detention
centerand wastingAustraliantaxpayers’money. 4 _______
He comparedthe situationtobuildinganewhouse for tenantswhothenrefuse tomove in.“The Australian
taxpayershave paidabout$10 millionforanew facilityandwe wantpeople tomove,”he said.
Detainee advocateshave questionedMr.Dutton’sassessment,pointingtophotographicevidencethatthe
alternate facilitiesare notready.
“I finditveryhard to believeanythingthatthe immigrationministerissayingatthisstage — that’sbasedon
the fact that I was at the camp on Manus Islandlastweek,”saidJanaFavero,directorof advocacyat the
AsylumSeekerResource Center.“The onlythingthat’smakingthese menlive inthese conditionsisthe
destructionthat’sbeenbroughtonthembyauthorities.Icanunderstandwhythey’re staying:because
they’re goingtobe movedfromone prisonto another.”
Mr. Boochani saidthat the menwere tired,andhe demandedthatthe Australiangovernmentfindasolution
to the stalemate.
“We’ve beeninthisprisoncampfor more thanfour years,”he said.“We are refugees,andwe’ve been
recognizedasrefugeesbyinternational law.Letusgoto a thirdcountry.We don’twantto go to Australia.”
Of the 843 asylumseekersstillonManus,nearly200 have not had theirclaimsfor refugee statusapproved
or have beenrejected,includingmanyof the camp’sleaders.
Justhours afterMr. Boochani saidhe fearedarrest,asylumseekersonthe islandsaidhe hadbeentaken
fromthe camp bythe authorities. 5_____
