Strategic Plan Assignment
Each student shall prepare a 10-page strategic plan following
the assignment guidelines. The purpose of the strategic plan is
to allow the selected healthcare organization to understand their
current strategic position, where they want to be in the future,
and how they will achieve those goals. For this strategic plan,
you will select an existing healthcare organization local to your
community to conduct a strategic plan analysis on. The strategic
plan should project 3 year’s worth of planning. Additionally,
students should focus on identifying a target market (consumer
or business in South Florida) whose needs are not currently
5. being met, not being met satisfactorily or even recognized.
Students also should think about competitive offerings, and how
their offering will be communicated and delivered. The solution
must be actionable or realistic.
The strategic plan will be completed in 3 phases, which will all
culminate to create the final strategic plan due on 4/22. Please
see below for the due dates of each phase.
Phase 1 due: February 16, 2020 (Cover page, introduction,
M,V,V,G)
Phase 2 due: March 8, 2020 (Objectives, Markets served and
Sources of Income, Competition)
Phase 3 due: April 5, 2020 (SWOT, Action Plan)

Abbott Laboratories
Introduction
Abbott is a global healthcare organization that works towards
improving the lives of people in the world in the most efficient
way possible. The strategic plan for the company is founded on
diversity by looking into consumer issues from all over the
world. It ensures that it balances the major businesses within
the company across all regions. The company generates the
largest percentage of its sales revenue from other countries
except for the U.S. About 50% of the revenue is attained from
the developing regions. All the organizational operations work
towards maintaining their relevance within the market
especially with the diversity that is evident in the industry. It
has ensured a consistent and reliable production of high-quality
pharmaceutical products, an aspect that has enabled it to remain
competitive within the market today. The company’s goal is to
be the scientific and commercial leader within the healthcare
sector. This requires it to ensure and even exceed the
expectation of healthcare stakeholders, including facilities,
medical experts and clients ("Home | Abbott U.S.," 2020).
10. It is important to assess the organization, especially with the
changes within the healthcare sector in the current times. With
the increased technology, the healthcare sector has continued to
shift from the traditional manual operation approaches into
technological and automated methods. There has also been the
discovery of new diseases that affect people in the
contemporary world. The organization needs to ensure that its
operations work towards improving the healthiness of the
community members through eradicating these diseases. Hence,
it is important to identify whether the healthcare company is
able to keep up with the trends and hence pursue its goal of
maintaining high-quality healthcare to the community members.
The company is managed by a board of directors who govern
different departments. One of the segments of the board is the
human resource committee. It is mainly responsible for the
hiring and firing process within the company. The second
segment is the share transfer committee. It is concerned with the
selling and buying of company shares and other transfers as far
as shares are concerned. The banking committee oversees
finances within the organization. The audit committee regularly
analyzes different organizational departments to ensure that
they are all working as per the organizational strategic plan.
Under the audit committee is a sub-segment for the internal
audit. The other segment under the board of directors has the
chief executive officer. This is the vastest segment with the
organizational management under it. It is responsible for
directing and managing the operations within the company in
such a way that every organizational task is performed towards
achieving a common goal. There are different departments that
work under management. They include the nutritional
department, pharmaceuticals department, diabetes care
department, general healthcare department, and diagnostics
among others ("Home | Abbott U.S.," 2020).
Company mission
The mission statement for Abbott Laboratories is “To improve
lives by providing cost-effective health care products and
11. services.”
Company vision
The vision for Abbott laboratories is “to be the world’s premier
healthcare company. Simply put, we want to be the best- the
best employer, the best healthcare supplier, the best business
partner, the best investment, and the best neighbor.”
Values
The core values guiding Abbott Laboratories include honesty,
fairness, and integrity. Through its operations, the company
does not encourage fraudulent activities, concealment or any
other form of deceit. Also, the decision-making process
implemented within the company is founded on equality and
does not tolerate prejudice of any kind or even bias. It is also
guided by strict moral principles as outlined by the
organizational code of conduct ("Abbott At A Glance," 2020).
Goals
The company aims at ensuring the fulfillment of human
potential in different regions in such a way that it upholds the
diverse aspects and phases of life. It also aims at ensuring high-
quality healthcare services to patients regardless of their

which physicians arrange the patient diagnostic and treatment
procedures ("Abbott At A Glance," 2020).

Objectives Abbott Laboratories
Short term
objectives
Objectives
Accomplishment
Improve quality through on-time delivery
The plan is to produce and deliver quality products and services
to the customer on time. It focuses on removing wasteful
processes that hinder on-time delivery (Johnson & Debono,
2016). It includes both internal processes such as employees of
the plant and food and drug administration and external
processes such as suppliers and retailers.
Attract, developing and retaining human capital
13. Developing a flexible working schedule to attract highly
talented employees. Creating a formal leadership program for
the one-year, formal mentorship program, and integrating
diversity in the workplace.
Long term
Objectives
Improved innovation through technology
Keeping track of the leading technological changes in the health
care’s industry. Integrate the latest technology into developing a
new product in the fast-growing emerging market such as the
need for quality nutrition (Page, 2014). Being more responsive
to consumer need through investment in research and
development, manufacturing, and supply chain.
Diversification of product worldwide
Develop customer-focused products to offer a solution to
people. Aligning product offerings to specific customer
segments and particular regions through new delivery methods,
packaging, and new formulation to become a market leader in
geographic segments.
Market Served and Source of Income
Abbott Laboratories operates a diversified market to increase
customers and gain competitive advantages. The primary
markets are classified according to the product segment of the
company. They include pharmaceutical preparation
manufacturing markets that involve branded and generic
pharmaceuticals, diagnostic market, nutritional, and medical
devices (Nasdaq, 2019). Its primary product is classified into
nutritional, medical, and pharmaceuticals for the basis of the
Abbott Laboratories market.
Abbott Laboratories' goal and mission focus on market diversity
to reach most of the consumers. It develops a market portfolio
based on the market structure hence able to reaches its
diversified consumer (Nasdaq, 2019). Abbott Laboratories
market can be classified as a global market due to its
14. diversification in significant countries worldwide to reach its
consumers and patient with its key stakeholders, including
hospitals, pharmacies, and physicians.
Abbott Laboratories generates its largest income from sales
revenues, with approximately fifty percent of the total revenues
coming from direct sales to patients and consumers (Abbott,
2020). It has led the health care organization to be regarded as a
consumer-facing company in the world due to its approaches
toward centralized customers as a source of income. More than
seventy percent of its revenues come from the global market
outside its domestic market.
The medical device segment is the largest in terms of revenue
generation making around twelve billion U.S dollars in revenues
in 2019 (Mikulic, 2020). The segment includes the business of
selling medical devices such as carotid artery disease, heart
diseases, vascular conditions, and stroke that are significant
sources of revenue. It is followed by diagnostic segments that
produce around eight billion U.S dollars every year (Mikulic,
2020). The nutritional segment generates around seven billion
U.S dollars that include food function, dietary supplement, and
clinical and medical foods. Pharmaceuticals business generates
around four billion U.S dollar a year.
Competition
Abbott Laboratories apply diversifications and differentiation
strategies in the market that reduce competition. Despite its
approaches, its products and services face competition in
technological innovation, product performance, price, on-time
supply, and conveniences of use (CIS Market, 2020). Despite
Abbott Laboratories' advantages in technological advancements,
it faces high competition from competitors introducing new
products and services. Currently, technology has become a
foundation to base a competitive edge in the market through the
innovation of new product matching specific consumer needs
increasing competition in the global market.
Abbott Laboratories face competition from differentiation and
diversifications of the nutrition products. Health care
15. manufacture tends to diversify their product and service
according to consumer behaviors that increase competition
based on price, packaging, consumers advertising, availability,
scientific innovation, and formulation (CIS Market, 2020). The
aspect of international competition is based on multiple players
in the market that increase the power of buyers toward the
substitution of products, new medical practices and procedures,
and technological innovation.
Abbott Laboratories face serving competition from other major
rivalries in the global market that reduce its market shares.
They are involved in a major market segment as those of Abbott
Laboratories hence increasing competition in technological
innovation and launch of new products. They may include
Johnson & Johnson company, Novartis company, Merck,
Medtronic, Pfizer, and Philips.

Product and market improvement
Parklands will improve its innovation. Moreover, this will
improve the patient's experience. The company is also offering
training programs for its employees. Investing in tools and
resources will enable the company to achieve consistency as
well as predictability of results, (Miller,2019). In order to
improve the experience of the patient and family, the
organization will ensure patients access, eligibility assessment,
and care authorization more patient-centred.
Financial benefits
One of the strategic plans of the organization is to lower the per
capita cost of care while improving the quality of care and
experience of care, (Orenstein, et al., 2018). Access to financial
capital important to any health care organization that responds
to changes in the society, acquire new technology, renovates or
18. replaces equipment, and offers new programs. Non-operating
income includes fines billed to patients for late payment. Non-
operating income can be earned through selling equipment,
(Lang, et al., 2016). The operating margin is expected to
increase due to the quality of care offered. The company also
plans to reduce waste, eliminate care that does not add value,
and introduce new health care practices that address the health
needs of the community.
Operational benefits
Patients who visit the hospital seek care in small ways and
others in major ways. The main role of health care providers is
to relieve suffering from patients. The organization has a
consistent as well as patient-centred care. In addition, the
organization has also come up with direct patient care. This has
been achieved through training thousands of health care
providers. The health care organization has a teaching mission.
One of the goals of the health care faculty is to achieve well-
coordinated, value-driven and empathic care. This can only be
achieved through the team that includes faculty and non-faculty
members working together, (Brest & Harvey, 2018). The
expectation of all the workers to add value will be incorporated
into the process of workers focused effort in hiring, recruiting,
training and accountability in job performance.
The community needs realization and benefits
A community refers to a public institution. The organization is
meeting the needs of the community through developing an
ongoing communication between Parklands management and the
community, (Erbelding, et al., 2018). The health care facility is
also reviewing reports to determine which areas to prioritize
and allocate resources in order to maximize the impact. They
are also organizing outreach activities to improve coordination
and engagement. This has contributed to the eradication of
health disparities and value-based care. The organization will
partner with the community by creating a system of support to
connect with society.
