Presented by Stephen Moore, MANTECH
ACQUEAU Workshop Helsinki 2015_Brokerage session_Stephen Moore_MANTECH
1. Real Time Monitoring for Effective and
Sustainable Industrial wastewater
Treatment and Compliance
15 min COD analysis
2. • We would like to thank National Research
Council and IRAP for making this visit
possible
• From NRC in attendance are:
• John McDougall
• Carole Morneau
• Andrew Bauder
3. COD and BOD
• The standard BOD test requires
five days to complete - unable to
provide continuous monitoring of
organic load.
• BOD measures the oxygen
consumption from biological
matter in the wastewater
• COD measures the oxidizable
organic mater in the wastewater
• COD is often used for BOD
screening.
• Current regulated method
requires the use of Mercury and
Dichromate
• Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand
(COD) are ubiquitous measurements of overall water quality.
4. Regulatory Requirements
• Determination of COD to measure organic matter in wastewater
effluent is required under the EU Urban Waste Water Directive
91/271
• Mercury is to be prohibited for use within Sweden as of 2016
• http://www.government.se/sb/d/11459/a/118550
• European Chemical Authority Helsinki (ECHA) has labeled Dichromate
as a serious chemical of serious health concern.
• Scheduled to be banned September 2017
5. Actions to Meet Regulatory Requirements
• RWS-CIV
• Dutch MOE began testing & validating an alternate COD method to address regulatory
challenges
• …from MANTECH
• KAPPALA Wastewater Association, Sweden.
• Published “Invitation to Tender for the Provision of a Pre-Commercial Procurement of a
Mercury Free COD analysis method for Wastewater and Waste Products”
• Funded By VINNOVA
• MANTECH’s technology selected to develop and commercialize an alternate COD method for
municipal WWTP’s
• Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC), Ontario Canada.
• Have already released E3515 after a 20 month validation
• http://www.mantech-inc.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/MOE-PeCOD-Method.pdf
6. What is the alternate COD method?
• PeCOD – Photoelectrochemical COD
• Patented sensor consists of a UV-activated
TiO2 (titanium dioxide) photocatalyst
• Powerful oxidizing potential of TiO2 gives a
true measure of COD
• COD analysis method of Ontario Ministry of
Environment (Method E3515)
• COD analysis can now be done by any
operations staff member
7. PeCOD Technology
• Uses a TiO2 sensor
• TiO2 is a well established, powerful and versatile
photocatalyst (3.2 V)
• TiO2is illuminated with UV light, and
becomes a powerful oxidant
• Oxidizes the organics in a sample, and
directly measures the amount of
oxidation
8. Load. Start. Done.
PeCOD®
• FAST, ACCURATE and SAFE
Way to MEASURE COD!
• Complete Product Offering
• Software
• Automation

• On-Line
9. PeCOD® COD Analysis
Overcomes many of the problems
encountered by existing COD
analysis methods
• Fastest available method – results in only
15 minutes
• Does not use dichromate or other
hazardous reagents
• Can be used by all operations staff
• Excellent BOD screening tool
10. PeCOD Products – Where can they be used
• Laboratory
• Field
• At-line
• Online
11. PeCOD® Applications
Municipal
• Incoming COD monitoring
• In-plant COD monitoring
• Wet weather events
• Discharge compliance
• Potable water analysis
Industrial
• In-plant COD monitoring
• Process optimization
• Discharge compliance
• Fine avoidance
Laboratory
• COD analysis
• Multi-parameter
• Speed and accuracy
• Safety of employees
12. What are the Challenges to Address?
1. To meet regulatory requirements that are to be implemented
2. Effective waster water treatment – requires effective monitoring
3. Optimize industrial waste water treatment
4. Promote sustainability, protect the environment and protect the
public
Where is MANTECH NOW
1. New innovation allows for quick and safe COD analysis
2. Current development projects are applied to laboratory and municipal sites
What we would like to Investigate?
1. Develop innovative technology for industrial applications
13. Why Work With MANTECH to Develop and Commercialize
the COD Method for Industrial Applications
• Peace of mind
• Fine Avoidance
• Protect the Public
• Protect the Environment
• Compliance
• Process optimization

15. Pulp & Paper Example
A Pulp and Paper company in Chile. After
running the PeCOD for 12 months, it gave
the ability to optimise the ClO2 usage
This resulted in savings of US$6,341/day
WHY?
1. Lower reagent consumption
2. Lower amount of organics to treat
3. Energy efficiency Gains
• The initial investment was justified through effective compliance and improving the health &
safety of users.
• In addition, has resulted in process optimization with financial savings >US$2M/year!
16. “We moved from the COD vials to the PeCOD® primarily because it
allowed us to run our process more efficiently and further
adjustments to our process could be made up to ten times a
day. With the COD vials, only 3 or 4 adjustments could be made. This
increase in efficiency and turnaround time in sample analysis has
easily paid for the system, not to mention the added benefit that
we're no longer using carcinogenic chemicals to test for COD. We
have also seen a reduction in cost of consumables and waste
disposal.”
Mark Westhorpe, Analytical Shift Leader, Vertellus Specialty Materials based in
the United Kingdom.
