CONTENT
3. 1.NATURAL RESOURCES
• Natural resources are the resources available in nature like air, water, sunlight, soil,
minerals, forests, wildlife etc.
• Natural resources are classified into two types:
i) Renewable resources
ii) Non-renewable resources
4. 1.1.RENEWABLE RESOURCES
• Renewable resources are those resources which can be renewed by chemical,
physical, mechanical process.
• Example of renewable resources are solar and wind energy, water, forests and
wildlife, etc.
5. 1.2.NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES
• Non-renewable resources are those resources which take thousand of years to
be renewed.
• Example of non-renewable resources are fossil fuels, minerals, natural gas, coal,
etc.
6. 2. MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
• The system controlling the use of natural resources so as to avoid their
wastages and to use them in most effective way is called as management of
natural resources.
• Examples of these kinds of projects include: micro-watershed management,
irrigation water management, soil and water conservation, community
forestry, community-based coastal zone fisheries management, and
conservation of biodiversity.
7. 2.1. NEED TO MANAGE OUR NATURAL RESOURCES
We need to manage our natural resources because:
• The population of earth is increasing at a tremendous rate, so demand of
resources are also increasing. Proper management of resources ensures we
fulfill the need of current generations as well as future generations.
• Proper management of resources will take into the long term prospective, so
that the resources will last to come. It will ensure that the resources are not
exploited for short term profit.
• Proper management of resources will ensure equitable distribution for all. It
means that everybody benefits from the development of these resources, not
just the rich and poor.
• Proper management of natural resources will make sure that the damage to
the environment while exploiting these resources is kept to a minimum.
Management of natural resources is needed
for the conservation of natural resources
8. 3.CONSERVATION OF FOREST
Forests can be conserved by :-
i) Afforestation – planting of more trees.
ii) Preventing or reducing deforestation.
iii) By setting up wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, biosphere reserves etc.
iv) Undertaking social forestry programs like Van Mahotsav, Chipko
movement for planting and protecting trees on a large scale.
9. 4.CONSERVATION OF WATER
Water can be conserved by :-
i) Constructing dams and reservoirs to regulate supply of water to the fields.
ii) Industrial wastes should be treated to prevent chemical and thermal
pollution of fresh water
iii) Rainwater harvesting should be done by storing rain water and recharging
groundwater
10. 5.CONSERVATION OF SOIL
Soil can be conserved by :-
i) Maintenance of soil fertility : The fertility can be maintained by adding manure
and fertlilizers regularly as well as by rotation of crop.
ii) Reforestation : Planting of trees and vegetation reduces soil erosion by both
water and wind.
iii) Soil can also be conserved by different methods i.e. contour ploughing and
terrace farming.
11. 6.CONSERVATION OF WILDLIFE
Wildlife can be conserved by :-
i) Laws should be made to impose a total ban on the poaching (killing) or capturing
of any animal or bird belonging to an endangered species.
ii) The Government Department connected with the conservation of wildlife should
conduct a periodic survey in all the forests, National parks and Sanctuaries to have
knowledge of the population of all species of wild animals and birds.
iii) The natural habitats of wild animals and birds should be preserved by
establishing National Parks and Sanctuaries throughout the country.
12. 7.CONSERVATION OF FOSSIL FUELS
Fossil fuels can be conserved by :-
i) The direct use of coal for the purpose or burning should be avoided. Coal may
be converted into liquid fuel and compressed natural gas (CNG) through coal
gasification.
ii) Both oil wells and coal mines are prone to catch fire. Therefore, these should be
well protected from fire to avoid wastage pollution and loss of life and property.
iii) Over-consumption of oil in automobiles should be checked. We must save oil
for future use because only a few years are left for its depletion.
13. 8.THE THREE R’S TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT
The three R ’s to save the environment are reduce, reuse and recycle
i) Reduce means using less of natural resources and avoiding
wastage of natural resources.
ii) Reuse means using things again and again like the plastic bottles in which
we buy jams, pickles etc can be again used for storing things in the kitchen.
iii) Recycle means the materials used for making things can again be used for
making new things instead of synthesising or extracting new paper, plastic,
glass or metals.
