Hilton Worldwide offers a wide range of job op-
portunities in countries around the world. Veter-

portunity initiative are excelling in diversified roles,
including food and beverage, call center, reser-
vations, marketing, guest services, operations,

Worldwide is searching for candidates across all of

COMMITMENT TO VETERANS
Hilton Worldwide has been committed to sup-
porting veterans and their families since the
company’s founding nearly a century ago by
Conrad Hilton, a United States Army veteran
who served in World War I. In August 2013, Hilton
Worldwide announced Operation: Opportunity,
a major initiative to support veterans and their
families – including the hiring of 10,000 veterans
and their dependents in the next five years.
The hospitality industry, in particular, requires
many of the same skill sets as the military. It is
a 24/7 operation that requires a high degree of
professionalism and expertise. There are many
ranks, with a great deal of opportunity to grow.
Military veterans are a natural fit for Hilton
Worldwide. The two groups share similar values
– such as integrity, ownership and teamwork –
that support the company’s mission to become
the preeminent global hospitality leader. Veter-
ans’ understanding of cultural differences and
diversity is also extremely valuable, as is their
ability to lead others.
A VETERAN SUCCESS / TRISTAN MURRAY
Tristan Murray spent 10 years in the United
States Marine Corps before separating as a
sergeant. His main responsibilities were career
planner, motor transportation, and administra-
tion. Murray started working at Hilton Worldwide
in May 2005 as a supervisor. Six months after he

joined the company, he was promoted to man-
ager and given added responsibility.
Murray is now a food and beverage restaurant
manager with Hilton Worldwide. He is also a Di-
versity Committee champion and a food safety
facilitator. In addition, he serves as the property
“military commander,” the primary contact for Hil-
ton Worldwide’s Veteran Team Member Resourc-
es Group (VTMRG). Through this role, he helps
new veteran team members identify a mentor
and organizes community volunteer events and
veteran team member recognition events.
The skills and experiences that Murray learned
during his time in the Marine Corps have proved
to be invaluable. After joining the Marine Corps
Reserve, he worked in the quick-service restau-
rant business for nearly eight years. He held vari-
ous positions, including shift manager, assistant
manager, market training manager, general man-
ager, and multi-unit manager of notable fast food
chains – all before reaching the age of 30.
At that point, he knew that it was time for a sig-
nificant change. He chose hospitality because of
his desire to work with people and to give them
an experience like none other.
“All of my experiences, especially my military ex-
periences, have shaped the person that I am today
– which has helped me to get to where I am now,”
he said. “I have learned a great deal of invaluable
leadership experience in the Marine Corps. The
discipline, professionalism, and dedication to duty
amongst other attributes are all qualities that em-
ployers like to see in their employees.”
Murray said that he would not change anything
about his military experience. “I believe that the
path that I chose to get to where I am as it relates
to my military experiences are irreplaceable and
invaluable,” he said. “The things that I have gone
through and the decisions that I have made have
prepared me to be successful. When I speak of
my military experience, it is not in a tone of regret
or despair, but rather honor – and a deep appre-
ciation for the many brothers and sisters (Marines)
that I have had the privilege to serve alongside.
“Coincidentally, one of the Marines that I
served with in Afghanistan now works at Hilton
Worldwide with me, and two other veterans work
at Hilton Worldwide locations close by. So my
stories of success have inspired them to do the
same; and so far, it is working for them as well as
it has worked for me.”
The leadership skills he developed in the military
are paying off at Hilton Worldwide. “The skills I de-
veloped in the Marine Corps contribute to my abil-
ity to lead and develop my subordinates to suc-
ceed and accomplish their career goals,” he said.
Also paying off are his military experiences that
involved working with people from around the
world. “I had to learn to interact with different
people from all walks of life, both nationally and
internationally,” he said. “I have learned many
customs and courtesies from other countries,
and I have really fine-tuned my leadership abili-
ties when it comes to ‘living the Hilton values
and leading by example’ – because a lot of what
Hilton teaches and inspires us to do as leaders
the Marine Corps spent years instilling.
“So, at this point, what others are just now
learning, I have been given the unique opportu-
nity to fine-tune and perfect. In the field of hos-
pitality, you come across many different people.
And whether it’s guests or other team members,
they may have different beliefs, ideas, and ways
of thinking than you do. I have learned that, with
all those personalities and attitudes, you can be
successful – as a result of my experiences and
interactions, and not in spite of them.”
Because Hilton Worldwide’s values match
up with those of the military, Murray believes
veterans will find the company a great place
to work. “With the exception of my time in the
Marine Corps, I have never felt such strong re-
gard, passion, and respect for a company like I
do about the Hilton Worldwide,” he said. “When I
researched Hilton Worldwide’s values, they were
right in line with that of the Marine Corps.
“As I continued to look into the career oppor-
tunities at Hilton Worldwide further, I recognized
that I wanted to continue my career with Hilton
Worldwide: an organization of individuals that
genuinely have a desire to see you grow and
succeed within the company and will go above
and beyond what your average employer will do.
“When I began my career at Hilton Worldwide a
short time ago, I asked the training manager in ori-
entation how quickly can a person be promoted
to the next level. Her response was, ‘Tristan, in the
two days that you have been here in orientation,
you have stood out and have shown that you have
a desire and commitment to your craft – and if you
continue to show and prove yourself, then your ac-
complishments will not go unnoticed.’
“Within months, I was given added responsi-
bilities, and shortly after that I was enrolled in a
development class. And just after completing my
development class and achieving my six months
in my current position, I was promoted to that
next level.”
Murray encourages veterans to consider a ca-
reer at Hilton Worldwide. “If success, advance-
ment, and family is something that you are look-
ing for in an employer, then without a doubt you
should be researching Hilton Worldwide’s em-
ployment opportunities,” he said.
And when they are ready to find a career at
Hilton Worldwide, Murray encourages them to
find the best fit. “First, figure out what area/de-
partment best suits your needs and experiences,
and apply for that position,” he said. “Ensure that
your resume best communicates your abilities
and skills that you have learned in your time in
the service. Then, when you sit down, ask your
interviewer questions about the position.”
