7. How is breast milk produced
●The let down reflex
●When the baby sucks: nerve ending in nipple and
areola are stimulated which signal the pituitary
gland in the brain to release 2 hormones prolactin
and oxytocin
●Prolactin causes alveoli to take nutrients from
blood and produce milk
●Oxytocin causes cells around the alveoli to contract
and eject milk around the milk ducts.

● Let down of milk is experienced in numerous ways:
1) infant actively begins to suck and swallow
2) milk may drip from opposite breast
3) mother may feed tingling or fullness in breast or
uterine cramping
● May feel thirsty
10. Types and composition of breastmilk
●Colostrum or early milk: produced in late stage
of pregnancy till 4 days after delivery rich in
antibodies
●Transitional milk: produced from 4-10 days
after delivery less in protein compared to
colostrum
●Mature milk: produced after 10 days of delivery
till termination of breastfeeding

feeding can be classified
●Fore milk: early milk at the beginning of
feeding which has more lactose proteins

●Hind milk: comes towards end of feed rich
in fat. Satisfies baby hunger
14. Rules of breastfeeding
●Exclusive breastfeeding till 6 mon of age and continue
breastfeed till 2 yr age.
●Complementary foods rich in iron and nutrients should be
started at 6 mon age.
●Mother and baby should sleep in proximity to each other to
enhance breast feeding.
●Breast feeding should be initiated as soon as possible after
birth.
●Ensure 8-12 feedings every 24 hours till 2-3 months then 6
feedings till 6 months and five feedings till 1 yr of age.

●At every feeding infant is placed only on one breast
next feeding next breast thus alternating them
●Duration of feeding is approximate 20-30 minutes
●The more the baby suckles more mild produced
●Breast milk flow partly depends on mother thoughts

●Give no other supplements to breastfeeding
