2. The ancient theater of Dodoni
is one of the oldest theaters in Greece. Its
construction began in the 3rd century BC. It
can sit 18000 people, and it is 22 m. high.
3. The stage
The stage was a two-storey, rectangular
building measuring 31,20 x 9,10m and
was flanked by two rectangular rooms,
the paraskenia (backstage), separated
with each other with four pillars.
4. The orchestra, 18.70m in diameter, was
not entirely circular. A carved rock
called Thymeli, the altar of Dionysus,
stood at its centre.
5. The role of the ancient theater was mainly
religious, educational and recreational.
Today, the theater is used for theatrical and
musical performances but it is also considered
an archaeological site.
