What is touch screen ?
1.
2. What is Touchscreen ?
A touchscreen is an electronic visual display that
can detect the presence and location of a touch
within the display area.
3. History
• The Fairlight CMI was published
as a light pen which the user
could allocate and manipulate
sample and synthesis data, as
well as access different menus
within its OS by touching the
screen with the light pen.
• A first capacitive touch screen
was developed by American
inventor G Samuel Hurst and
the first version produced in
1982
4. • In 1983, the first touchscreen
computer is published named HP-
150
• IBM Simon is the first phone with
touch screen (1992)
• The Game.com is the first
handheld game console with
touch screen and stylus in 1997
5. Advantages
• The input device is also the
output device
• Reduces buttons and menus,
making user interface
simpler
• Fast command selection
(compared to a mouse)
• Improved flexibility for
customization and upgrades
• Easier cleaning and
maintenance
6. Disadvantages
• The user must sit within
arm’s reach of the
display
• Difficult to select small
items
• Possible retrofit problem
(the touch screen must
be fitted on the screen)
7. Technologies
Resistive
Resistive touch screen panels are using When pressure is applied to
the screen, by a finger or other objects, the layers are brought into
electrical contact which causes a switch closure and a command is
registered.
8. Capacitive
These screens are coated with those stores electrical charges. When
the panel is touched, a charge is created and that specific
information is sent to be processed. Unlike its resistive counterpart,
capacitive touch screens must be touched by a human finger or
some sort of conductive device being held by a human hand.
9. Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW)
This type of touch screen is glass with a string of transducers and
reflectors and registers touches using acoustic waves. When
touched, the wave is absorbed and the touch is registered and sent
to be processed. Since the panel is made of all glass the clarity is
superior to the other touch screen types.
10. HCI Issues
There are some important points in design of touch screen interfaces.
Normally, we don’t consider these things, but these little
interactions are so essantial to give right response by brian.
• Response speed should be of utmost importance. The speed and
ease with which a human can interact is increased within the touch
screen interface environment.
11. • More space comes in at a close
second to speed. All buttons
(especially keyboards) or object
in interface should design for fat
fingers that helps to think worst
and have to have enough space
between items.
• Intuitiveness of your design also
becomes a heightened concern.
In the touch screen
environment non-intuitive
information architecture will be
even more frustrating to your
users, when simple action does
not deliver as expected.
12. • Bright background colors or
patterns can hide glare and
reduce fingerprints. Solid black
is the worst possible choice.
• Flyout or rollover menus
become much less useful. You
may want to consider placing
navigation at the bottom of
your touch screen area, with
results/display at the top.
