Some species are less tolerant of human disturbance than others. As human impacts increase in an area, species that lay hundreds of eggs and range throughout North America are more at risk, while a small mammal that lives in both forested and alpine habitats may also be affected but a large mammal that lives only in alpine areas is least at risk.
