May a hundred million jobs bloom!
In keeping with the metaclysmic hopes the country has chosen to repose in a new political leadership this edition of the
primer celebrates job creation. Given that job and economic growth are the mantra the political mandate will ride on for the

At TeamLease, there is this euphoric sense that the times are in synchrony with our true calling: Putting India to Work! There
could have been no better force, than renewed socio-political vigour, to give our vision even more impetus. Accordingly, we
have abundantly seeded this edition with a jobs focus. The core emphasis on ‘unified’ salaries and skills – deep dive, this

There was a long pending need to consolidate the disparate analytical pieces that went into the making of the primer. As we
often wish to remind our valued audience, our Salaries-Skills-Jobs Thought Leadership is a work-in-progress – a
euphemism, actually, for constant learning and enrichment. About time though, that all insights concerned the central idea.

What provides a context to all of this analysis is a macroeconomic overview we have presented right at the outset: larger

ASSOCIATING JOBS, SALARIES AND SKILLS
This edition of the Salary Primer attempts to connect Jobs, Salaries and Skills for a more comprehensive understanding of
thelabourmarket.
Job creation is the core, demand-side, attribute we have been eager to append to the primer framework in our continual
quest for an insightful big picture of labour market dynamics that explain pay actions. With the current edition of the primer
wemakeabeginningtowardsexploring,andidentifyingtrendsinthejob-demandspace.
The genesis of this thought lies in the skills-salaries reporting. In a dynamic labour market skill requirements keep varying
and new skills are sought after as much as the continued need there is for the more fundamental skill sets. New jobs that
are created vary in their composition of the new and traditional skill attributes. This makes it essential for us to start
reportingonanevenmoreinclusiveanalysisthatcomprisesjobs,skillsandsalaries.
How we report ‘Jobs’
In order that the job creation activity, and associated trends, are appropriately understood while still mapping new jobs into
pay action reporting we have introduced a new section named ‘Industry trends that are driving new jobs and salaries’. This
sectionliststhebroaderattributesthataredrivingjobcreation.
We then go on to illustrate the job-demand space and relate it to skill attributes and salaries on a unique, ‘radar chart’ for a
wholesome understanding of how the three dimensions of our interest – jobs, skills and salaries – are interlinked. Job
Profiles that best represent the trends in each industry have been identified and are categorized into ‘Longstanding’ jobs,
‘Hot’jobsand‘Upcoming’ornew, jobs.
‘Longstanding’ jobs are those that have been in existence for a fairly longer period of time – than the other two categories
above – and are traditionally looked upon as those that define the individual industries. These form the conventional
choiceseachoftheindustriesholdsoutforcandidates.
‘Hot’ jobs are the cynosure of industry – and market – attention and, as implied by the buzz surrounding them, are the
‘flavour of the season’. As noted in our relevant analysis ‘Hot’ jobs are not necessarily the most rewarding of the three
categories.
‘Upcoming’ jobs are the jobs of tomorrow. By definition, these are relatively more futuristic, feature newer skill attributes or
aremoreskill-intensive,andoftencharacterizenew-ageindustries.
Thethreejobcategoriesareappropriatelydemarcatedonthevisualtoaidindependentanalysisandmutualcomparison.
How we report ‘Skills’
The current edition reports an enhanced, and more granular, skills framework that enlists 14 skill attributes that are
more appreciative of job market reality than the four broad skill areas previously reported.
The skill attributes in the new framework are defined as follows:

Salary Tables for the Industry
How to interpret the jobs-skills-salaries radar chart
Each radar chart that appears at the outset
on an Industry Salary page illustrates the
relationship between Job Profiles (as part of
one of the three Job Categories), Salaries
and Skill Attributes (expressed as Attribute
Levels and ordered in terms of Attribute
Intensity).
Job Profiles are arranged along the
periphery of the radar chart, as per Job
Category, and Attribute Levels (ratings: base
5) are printed right above / beneath. Within
each Job Category, Job Profiles are arranged
in increasing order of Attribute Intensity (as
depicted by the direction of the arrow).
Salaries are to be read along the concentric
circles that radiate outward to indicate
higher magnitude numbers.

Skill Attribute Measures: Attribute Levels and Attribute Intensity
Attribute Levels: are the ratings accorded to specified skill attributes in the context of a specified industry and a specified job
profile.
Attribute Intensity: is the degree of prevalence of a dominant skill attribute (or set of skill attributes) and is measured as a
ratio of the (sum of) rating of the dominant skill attribute(s) to the sum of the ratings of the rest of the skill attributes for the job
profile.
HowtoInterpret UnifiedIndustrySalaries
As of the previous edition of the primer, we have begun to report a single, unified, salary across temporary and permanent

THE JOBS AND SALARIES PRIMER
The Jobs and Salaries analysis includes a mix of techniques that afford a more complete understanding of the labour
marketdynamic.
Trends associated with job creation, skills and salaries, and their inter-relationships, are the focus of our analysis. We
believe that, in the current market scenario, these make up the prime set of attributes our audience wishes to obtain a
comprehensive understanding of and that these are the attributes that drive critical talent acquisition and retention
decisions.
The Industry Salary approach that forms the pivot on which the Jobs and Salaries project is designed, and which we
adopted during the previous year, aims to bring to the forefront the fast diminishing differential between temp and perm
market salaries. The Jobs, Salaries and Skills analysis maps the current trend in each industry and seeks to identify
patterns amongst these three key analysis dimensions. The Attribute ratings chart for a sample set of job profiles for each
industryisatemplatebywhichonecouldvisualizetheskillrequirementsofeachindustry.
The analytical process broadly comprised of the collation and preparation of data from big data sources and organizational
sources of data. The big data sources tapped into afforded sampling across the widest possible choice of job profiles, and
ensured that the data is current – especially for the purposes of categorization of jobs. Organizational data sources (from

Constraints
The document has the following constraints on data:
This analysis does not include Senior and CXO level profiles in most parts.
Results are based on the earnings between December 2012 and June 2013 across 81,000 associates employed
in the organized job market.
Salaries benchmarked in this document are mostly those pertaining to junior to mid-level profiles.
Figures are close to accurate. The earnings include regular salaries and do not include taxes / regulatory payouts,
incentives, allowances, bonus, over-time, one-time or unusual representative amounts.
The information provided does not reflect level of responsibility of the job seekers.

Agriculture & Agrochemicals
Industry Growth
NCAER and FICCI estimates put growth rates for Agriculture at
2.1% and for Agrochemicals at 8%.
Agrochemicals Usage
The restricted availability of farmland has put pressure on
yield per hectare, boosting usage of agrochemicals.
Patent Expiry
The market for generic players is set for explosive growth as
patent expiry peaks over 2009 – 14.
Government Credit
State initiatives encouraging farmers to increase pesticide
usage are only growing in number.
Automobile & Allied Industry
Poor Industry Growth
As per SIAM, growth in domestic sales of automobiles stalled
at 3.53% over FY 2013-14, thanks to inflation and high
vehicle finance rates. Production and job cuts followed.
Reduction in Excise Duty
Recent Excise Duty cuts by the government are expected to
propel demand.
Banking, Financial Services and Insurance
Fresh bank licenses and financial inclusion in rural areas
This RBI initiative is expected to create 20 lac new jobs over
the next 5 to 10 years in rural areas.
Retirement deluge
Beginning this year, about 50% of Public Sector bank
workforce is due to retire over the next few years, creating
large vacancies.
Hiring ambitions of leading tax / audit firms
An estimated, small but significant, addition of 50,000
workers is expected over the next 4 years.
How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
A new regime, post elections, is
expected to extend even more tax
incentives, stimulate demand and
effect a revival. Employer sentiment
in the sector is set to rise soon, and
so would job numbers.
How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
Public Sector entities have large
scale of business, wide geographical
reach and, therefore, necessitate
substantial workforce number
addition.
Industry Trends that are driving new jobs and salaries
How we believe these
developments resulted / would
result in creation of new jobs:
Agriculture & Agrochemicals is an
employment intensive sector, and
impetuses such as these work to
generate new jobs by expanding
demand for stakeholders.
A synopsis of the factors that influenced new job creation and salary payouts in
each industry during the year that passed by.
6RESEARCH
THE TEAMLEASE JOBS AND SALARIES PRIMER : 2014
14. How we believe future developments
would result in creation of new jobs:
A new regime and fresh policies are
expected to decongest the sector
from these bottlenecks and provide
the much needed impetus for job
growth.
Construction & Real Estate
Growth constrained
High interest rates, land / environmental clearances, capital
inadequacy and resultant delays stymied growth for the sector.
14
Strong growth coupled with increasing consumer expectations
Increasing income levels, easier access to finance and leapfrogging
innovation-adoption levels have translated into a USD 15B market
growing at 14.8% CAGR.
Fresh investments and rural demand
Leading FMCD players such as Videocon and Hitachi are setting up
manufacturing plants in Tamil Nadu over the next few years. Tier-2 / 3
and rural demand has skyrocketed and catching up with urban
sensibilities.
FMCG
Uncertain consumer demand
Depressed consumer demand of the yester-years is replaced with an
uncertain pattern of demand growth, placing employers in the sector in
a quandary over hiring.
Growing rural demand
Rural growth at 16% trounced an otherwise unpredictable market and
a rather depressed, merely double-digit, urban market growth.
Power & Energy
Shift towards renewable sources of energy
A record, 21 solar energy projects commissioned in FY13-14 points to a
paradigm shift towards greener energy alternatives.
New, relaxed, bidding norms
The Government has relaxed bidding norms for two upcoming ultra-
mega power projects. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission
(JNNSM) actively encourages states to promote solar power.
How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
A generally ebullient industry is well on
course to create enormous job
opportunities.
How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
With a renewed focus on fast growing
tier-3 and rural markets, FMCG is likely
to revive revenues and hence, job
creation.
How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
These new developments have resulted
in domestic players such as the Sriram
Group and the Hero Group, as well as
Middle-East based businesses to plan
investments that are bound to generate
new jobs.

15. How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
Besides the perpetually healthy nature
of the sector, global pharma majors
making a beeline for India is set to
provide a huge fillip to job growth.
Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals
India, a hub for generic drug manufacturing
With the global demand for generic drugs expanding, India is
increasingly being seen as the destination to serve this demand.
Booming Health Insurance
Better purchasing power, coupled with an acute awareness of lifestyle
diseases is fueling the demand for preventive healthcare and driving
more consumers to purchase and use health insurance.
How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
Although the election season is a
temporary cause for travel and stay, the
increased capacity would need
businesses to drive / sustain demand
and service the capacity. The fast
changing consumption culture is a
fundamental change which is here to
stay and thrive. The industry is
positioned for dramatic growth and
resultant job creation in the days ahead.
Hospitality
The season for travel
The general elections, as well as a 10 – 15% surge in foreign travelers,
have resulted in a spike in demand for the Hospitality sector.
Mall space and the culture of consumption
Mall space has exponentially expanded across the country, and with
dining out habits undergoing a sea change even in tier-2 / 3
destinations, restaurants have people eating out of their hands.
Food & Beverages brand proliferation
Foods and Beverages brands – domestic and international – are
flooding retail shelves with a variety of options, thanks to changing /
diverse consumer preferences.

How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
A general, expansive, growth in the
audience numbers and resultant
dynamics of advertising mean
increased revenue and improved job
prospects in the media and
entertainment industry.
How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
A far more mature consumer market,
and increased discretionary spend only
means even more growth for the
industry. More job numbers are a
natural corollary.

Media & Entertainment
Continued fast growth
FICCI-KPMG findings peg industry growth in 2013 at a healthy 12%.
Deeper and wider penetration of news media
The ongoing election season has expanded the audience for news media
and increased readership / viewership as well as strong audience
engagement in the political discourse.
Digitization of electronic media
Distribution, and therefore reach, of the electronic media is set to
multiply manifold with the mandatory digitization of broadcasting.
Retail
Explosive industry growth
An ASSOCHAM-YES Bank study pegs the industry growth at 15% CAGR,
right up to 2017.
Flourishing ecommerce and a drastically improved online consumer
sentiment in favour of ecommerce has meant accelerated adoption
levels, enormous demand and growth.
FDI in multi-brand retail
Despite the current political brouhaha, the intent for foreign investment
in MBR is seen to be real and rhetoric is expected to subside following
the election run up.
16. How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
With mobile phone, and mobile internet,
penetration levels hitting unprecedented
levels network capacity additions and
infrastructure to service a large, fast
growing, market is bound to result in an
explosion of jobs in the sector.
Telecommunications
Hiring in rural areas
Network decentralization and lower costs are driving rural expansion of
infrastructure and customer care centers.
4G and data consumption
The impending entry of players into the 4G spectrum and a general
upward trend in adoption and usage of data services mean huge
capacity additions.
How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
Large scale projects, that are labour
intensive, would create substantial
demand for labour and therefore, throw
up huge employment opportunities for
the unorganized workforce.
Industrial Manufacturing
Steel
As per the World Steel Association, the outlook for steel industry is
positive in the year 2014 and demand for steel would grow at 3.3 %
(1.8% in 2013), touching 76.2 million tonnes. It is also estimated that
the growth would be in the 4 to 5% range in the year 2015.
The forces that are driving the demand for steel are listed below.
High potential rural market:
Much of the Indian population resides in rural areas and per capita steel
consumption is just about 14kg.
Factors such as rapid urbanization and increasing income levels result in
a rise in usage of various types of steel roofing. So, this offers a
tremendous opportunity for businesses to tap this segment.
Expansion plans by leading business players:
Several industry bigwigs such as Tata Steel, SAIL, JSW, Arcelor Mittal,
Nippon Steel have large scale projects in the pipeline. These are
expected to increase India’s steel producing capacity to 150 MT by 2017.
How we believe these developments
resulted / would result in creation of
new jobs:
Housing and construction activities are
strongly correlated with demand for
cement. These drive positive
developments for the industry. Thus, the
generation of new jobs is likely with an
improvement in business activity in the
industry.
Cement
The industry has been witnessing tough times over the past several
quarters. Low demand (due to poor infrastructure/construction
activity) and high capacity utilization (over supply) are the major factors
driving a negative trend.
In spite of the gloom, government focus on infrastructure spending is
expected to drive the demand for cement. About 1 trillion USD of
infrastructure spend is estimated during the 12th Five year plan (2012-
17). Also, various programs were implemented in the area of low cost
housing such as JNNURM and Indira Awas Yojana.

18. Salary growth remains conservative for the Agriculture and Agrochemicals industry, although
considerably higher than during the previous year.
The difference between temp and perm salaries is relatively higher for the industry, although
the gap is narrowing.
The industry decrements salaries for far fewer profiles this year, compared to the last.
A salary distribution skewed in favor of traditional job profiles points to lesser emphasis
on new job/talent pool creation.
For an industry that seeks a good balance of technical and soft skill attributes this lack of
emphasis on new skills is, clearly, a shortcoming in its talent strategy.

Salary growth heads south in the Automobile industry – down by almost a fourth from last
year’s near-double digit growth.
The industry downtrend seems to have taken a toll on the attractive increment payouts of
the last couple of years.
The immediate troubles do not take away from the industry’s positives, however. Being
inherently contract-workforce friendly, the Automobile industry narrows the temp-versus-
perm salary gap even further, this year.
A bias for technical skill attributes and an engineering focus – as seen in the below charts
– translates into forward looking investments into the jobs of the future.

industry, with salary payouts hitting a 3-year high.
With double-digit salary growth trends in 7 of the 10 cities in consideration, FMCD proves
tobe the most generous of all sectors.
As is the case with its other contract-workforce friendly counterpart, the Automobile
industry, FMCD narrows the temp-versus-perm differentials as well.
A distribution channel-driven, sales-focused, FMCD industry is not a great paymaster and
does not seem to invest significantly in upcoming jobs either.

FMCG continues its salary-growth streak this year, but the double-digit increments are
restricted to just the three cities named in the table.
A sales focused industry, FMCG, pays handsomely but mostly to market-facing roles and
skill attributes.
Also, unlike its ‘durables’ counterpart, the industry seems to make forward looking
investments in both today’s and tomorrow’s talent.
With low double-digit differences in temp-versus-perm salaries – across cities – the
industry is on course to close on this gap in the very near future.

Industrial Manufacturing & Allied treads cautiously, in what has for long been a slow
market, and keeps to sub-9% increment payouts in all but one city.
The higher salaries seem reserved for sales and IT profiles – seemingly, the key drivers of
market and competitive differentiations.
Although the industry has a perpetual need for a good mix of technical and managerial
talent, its payout investments seem constrained across job and skill attribute categories.

With surging consumer and industrial demand in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Pune, the
Power & Energy industry has its purse strings loosened, as always.
The diversity of job profiles Power & Energy is seen to be paying higher for, this year, points
to a better-designed payout strategy than most other industries.
The diverse skill attribute requirements for the industry, perhaps, necessitate an equitable
distribution of payouts.
All this payout effort, however, is sharply focused on current skill requirements of the
industry, with new skills getting the short shrift.

The BFSI industry stays conservative as always and has payout growth restricted to well
below 8% except in case of Pune.
The gloom doesn’t spread much beyond that, however. The industry payouts are at par for
the course, and fairly equitably distributed – across today’s, as well as tomorrow’s, skill
requirements.
Attribute ratings, across job profiles, score relatively higher on a diverse range and are a
good mix of technical, managerial and customer-facing attributes.
The salary differential between temp and perm is continually narrowing and, currently, just
about breaches double digits at the high end – a sign of a more equitable payout practice
than at most other industries.

46. The good news about the BPO & IT enabled Services industry is that, despite the downtrend it
has a talent pool focus most other industries lack thanks, perhaps, to unbridled attritions
rates.
Salary growth rates are modest – not very low – although, only in the few cities that have built
significant scale of operations.
Skill requirements in the BPO industry are scant, and mostly focused on customer facing
attributes.
The strong talent pool orientation the industry seem to have cultivated over the years shows
up in its payout distribution across today’s and tomorrow’s skill requirements.

Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals prunes its payouts somewhat, belying the apparently perpetual
pink health often attributed to it.
The new-found conservative payout is, however, uniformly distributed across cities – not a
single city has a salary growth rate under 8%.
Competitive considerations in the nascent and fast growing – and maturing – domestic
market, and inherent skill attribute diversity and intensity necessitate a strong focus on
current and future talent pool development. The industry does well on these counts.
