Hispanics
In Spanish «hispano» means «relating to Spain».




Today the name Hispanics is commonly used in
the United States for people
with origins in Spanish–speaking countries.
Hispanic population in the USA
•Hispanics comprise 15.08% of the US
population, or about 45 million people in 2007
•If this growth rate continues, Hispanics in the
United States will number anywhere from
80 million to over 100 million by 2050.

• California, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico,
  Arizona, Nevada and Florida have been
  home to Hispanic peoples since the 16th

  series of religious
  outposts
  established to
  spread the
  Christian doctrine
  among the local
  Native Americans

Rancho
• The Spanish (and
  later the Mexicans)
  encouraged
  settlement with large
  land grants which
  were turned into
  ranchos, where cattle
  and sheep were
  raised.
Californios
• “Californios” -
  Spanish-speaking
  people, who live in
  California

• By 1846, California
  had a Spanish-
  speaking population
  of under 10,000.
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
• The Treaty of
  Guadalupe Hidalgo -
  signed on February 2,
  1848
• Marked the end of the
  Mexican-American War.
• Mexico formally ceded
  California (and other
  northern territories) to
  the United States

Incorporation of the Hispanic
             people
• After the Treaty of
  Guadalupe-Hidalgo
  in 1848 and the
  Gadsden Purchase
  the vast majority of
  Hispanic populations
  chose to stay and
  become full US
  citizens.

Gold Rush
               (1848-1855)
• During the California Gold Rush, at least
  25,000 Mexicans and thousands of Chileans,
  Peruvians, and other Latin Americans
  immigrated to California.
