The document discusses Jesus' teachings on the greatest commandments from the Bible. It asks questions about empathy, when Jesus displayed empathy, and how to have a better cycle of helping Jesus, others, and oneself. It prompts the reader to identify a current need and how to meet that need.
2. Matthew 22:36-40New International Version (NIV)
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the
Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38
This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the
second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’[b] 40 All
the Law and the Prophets hang on these two
commandments.”

Jesus had been heckling with the hecklers for a while and it seemed he keeps saying things like – you think that this is important, but actually this is what’s important. That’s what I am going to be saying to you today. Perhaps you thought that x,y,z was really important but perhaps it’s not so much.

What needs was he looking after?
(Emotional, Physical, Spiritual?)
Who’s needs are most important?
Love others as – the same way we would like to be loved.
Love others as – while staying connected to our own feelings and needs.
Love others as – enabled by having loved out selves.
Love others as - acknowledging that we all have needs and need love.
Sometimes Jesus looks after self.
Sometimes he looks after others – even after Laza died?
Sometimes he was just with close friends.
I have a need to contribute.
Personally – Empathy Cards? The most practical way I know of showing love and empathy is to be aware of, connect with, and perhaps contribute towards a person’s needs.
How do we love others and evoke the love of others if we are strangers to ourselves? “If you are a stranger to yourself you will remain a stranger to others.”
It’s incredibly difficult to love somebody who isn’t alive to their own feelings and needs. We can do stuff for them, but it’s always going to be a bit clumsy – not quite knowing if it’s what they want and why it’s important to them.
Judgements V Empathy. Truth V Grace. It’s about intentionality and timing – not one or the other
Distraction V Presence = Give the gift of presence this week.
