1. During the creating stage, I think that my strengths are that I cooperated with my group
and gave helpful ideas. Each time that someone in the group gives a helpful idea,
everyone would sit down and listen to the idea. Then we’d each give our opinion and try to
make this movement better. Afterward, after trying it out a few times, if everyone likes it,
then we would include it in our dance. Each group member contributed greatly to the
movements, and together, after giving ideas, and trying them out a lot of times, we are
finally able to come up with this great dance. Most of the time, fan dancing would be very
fast, and the movements would be very light. However, we wanted our dance to be unique,
so we made it very slow and graceful throughout the whole performance. Also, usually, the
music for fan dancing would be traditional Chinese Music, but we chose a modern Chinese
Song that have some English words in it, so we added a little twist to this traditional dance,
just to make sure that it’s unique and different from others. I liked our movements since
they are quite graceful. At the beginning of the song, we are moving at a fast, light pace,
then as the singing starts, we started to slow down. Therefore we could say that our dance
contains varied speed and a variety of hand movements.
Our weakness though, and it’s a very big problem, is that sometimes, we would go off
topic and loose our focus. Sometimes, when we are trying out new movements, we just
ended up fooling around. Also, another one of our weakness is that sometimes we would
occasionally forget to record the whole process down in our DW book. Luckily, some of the
group member would always remember to remind us about writing down the creative
process. One of the main weakness though, it that we don’t really have a variety of
movements. Most of our movements are at the “high” level, and all of us are at the same
level. Also, there is really not any “heavy” movements. Most of our movements are just soft
and light, and that can get a bit boring since it’s always the same type of movements. If I
am to do this dance again, our group would probably calligraph more level actions, by
making us changing levels. Also we would add some “heavy” and “direct” movements just
so that the movements will be a little bit different from the other “light” and “indirect” ones.
I would say that our groups used the feedbacks that we got from others quite effectively.
First, when we showed our dance to another group, we got some feedbacks from them.
According to them, our movements aren’t very organized and we would occasionally forget
what to do. To make those flaws disappear, we decided to just practice more and try to
memorize our dance in our head. Then, when it’s near the performing day, we showed it to
Ms.Rankin. She said that our movements are good but we just need to be more in sync
with each other. Meaning that we should be exact mirror images of each other. To make
that problem go away, we just had to practice more. We tried to count the beat quietly so
that we would all do the same thing at the same time, and it was quite effective.
I would say that we sort of applied a bit of our research into our performance. While
researching, I had watched a video of a traditional Chinese Opera performance. I took
some of the movements from that performance, which is called Ba Wang Bie Ji, and
2. Our weakness is that we messed up with the counting on stage. Therefore, some of our
movements aren’t exactly in time with the beat, nor in sync with the others. However, it’s
just a small mistake, so we managed to cover it up without anyone noticing it. Also, we
laughed a little bit, because we got kind of nervous since the light is very bright and we
can’t really see what’s happening with the audience. In the beginning, we didn’t get into
position fast enough, and did our turning in the wrong direction because some of us
messed up with the positions.
I think that we could improve most of it by practicing in front of audience more. If we
practice with audience in front of us more, then when we are doing the actual
performance, we’ll be more used to having everybody’s eyes on us and won’t freak out or
make any silly mistake anymore. We should also improve on how to act on stage. We
shouldn’t giggle or whisper to each other like we did.
