The eGranary runs on multiple versions of the Windows operating system (OS). This document
describes installation under Windows 7. References to specific Windows constructs may look
slightly different or be labeled differently under other versions of the OS. All documentation refers
to OS components using standard terminology whenever possible.
Welcome to the eGranary Personal Edition (eG PE), a portable version of the eGranary Digital Library you
can install on your personal computer. This manual guides you through the step-by-step process of installing
the eG PE on your computer. There are also sections on troubleshooting and maintaining the installation.
You can find contact information for Widernet Project technical support in the troubleshooting section, should
you need help .

1 Check System Requirements
1.1 eGranary equipment
You should have:
The eGranary hard drive
A large black or silver box.
A power cord with a transformer
One end plugs into a power outlet, and the circular plug on the other end connects to the eGranary
console. For some hard drives this is two cords that you connect together in the middle.
A USB cord
A small plug on one end connects to the side of the eGranary hard drive and a larger, rectangular
plug on the other end connects to your computer. Both ends should have a symbol on them that looks
like the image below.
1.2 Computer and software
You should have:
Operating System
Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 7 or 2008. The eGranary hard drive will not work under Windows 95,
98 or ME.
Administrator Access
You must have administrator privileges on the computer in order to install the eGranary.
High-speed USB
The eGranary requires a high-speed 2.0 USB port. (USB ports are commonly used to connect
keyboards, printers, and flash drives to computers.)

3 Troubleshooting the eGranary PE
3.1 Basic Troubleshooting
Many issues that arise in the installation and use of the eGranary can be corrected by completing one or
more of the following steps. These steps are listed in the order you should do them, and you should test to
see if you corrected the issue before trying the next step. See the eGranary Maintenance (see page 8)
section for the specific instructions to complete each step.

4.7 Using the eGranary and the Internet
You can browse the eGranary and the Internet at the same time using two different Internet browsers. We
recommend that you use the eGranary Browser for the eGranary and continue to use your favorite Internet
browser for the Internet.
You can connect to the eGranary with any browser. For example, you could use Internet Explorer to access
the eGranary and Firefox to access the Internet. The browser in use with the eGranary must be configured
specifically to access the eGranary. The eGranary browser is automatically configured at installation. You
must manually change the browser proxy settings for other browsers. To configure another web browser to
work with the eGranary, see Appendix A - Alternate Browsers (see page 11).
4.8 Obtaining Version Information
You may be asked by technical support for the version of the PIE software you are using. To determine the
version number:
1. Open the Start Menu.
2. Select All Programs.
3. Select WiderNet eGranary Personal Information Engine.

mailto:support@widernet.org). If the file is very large, you may need to compress it using your favorite
zip tool.
11. Start the PIE Services (see page 8).
4.10 Restoring the Personal Information Engine (PIE) Services
You may need to restore the Personal Information Engine to its original configuration at some point.
If you have added users to the Community Information Platform and wish to preserve them, contact
WiderNet technical support (see page 6).
1. Navigate to the root of the eGranary drive.
2. Rename the folder pie to pie_old.
3. Locate the zipped version of the software in the root directory. The file name will follow the format
PIE-2.xx.zip.
4. Unzip PIE-2.xx.zip using your favorite zipping tool. (We recommend 7-Zip.) After you unzip the file, a
new folder named pie will be at the root of the drive.
5. Reinstall the PIE following the directions in Installing the eGranary Personal Edition (see page 4).
