The document discusses how the creator linked their film trailer to ancillary texts about the same film through consistent visual elements. Similar colors, fonts, and key images were used across a trailer, poster, and magazine cover to clearly show they are related. Dark, sinister lighting in the ancillary texts also aims to set a horror mood to identify the genre. The creator believes these visual links between the texts will help audiences recognize they are all based on the same film.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary txtsss
1. How effective is the
combination of your
main product and
ancillary texts?
2. In order to maintain continuity, I aimed to
make my trailer link to my ancillary texts,
so that my audience can easily recognise
that they are all texts based on the film. By
using similar colours on each text and
creating these links I believe it will make
my product more well known therefore
reaching a wider target audience.
3. Colour schemes
I have used a lot of the colour red which symbolises
strong emotion, such as Olivia feels. However, this also
symbolises blood and danger, which are both involved in
the film.
I have also used a lot of black which symbolises night-
time, when the majority of bad things tend to happen.
This also represents death, evil, fear and anger.
4. As you can see, I have used the
same background for my
magazine front cover and film
poster in order to create a
defined link between the two.
However, I have replaced the
posters picture of the hand with a
picture of ‘Rebecca Jones’ who is
in the film. Her name is situated
on the top left hand corner of the
poster as well as on the right I have created a link between the texts by using
hand side of the magazine cover, an off-white colour font for both titles, however
which tells the audience that it is have not used the same font to show that
the same actress. although it is featuring my film, the magazine is
produced by a separate company who have their
own identity. However, in the caption ‘child’s play
star…’ I have used the same font for the words
‘child’s play’ as on the poster which will create
another link. I also chose the same font for my
billing block on the poster and tagline for the
magazine as I believe this looked professional,
and obviously, I wanted both of my products to
look professional.
5. TRAILER
The lighting in my ancillary
texts is very sinister, to create
an impact on the audience by
making them feel on edge,
which is why I have used torch
and candle light to create this
effect. I believe this darkness
creates a dark mood, which
helps the audience identify my
genre of horror.
MAGAZINE AND POSTER
6. In the final title for ‘child’s play’ in my trailer, I used this shot of a
bloody handprint pressed up to a window. I then took
photographs of this image and edited it on ‘Photoshop,’ which
was how I created my film poster key image. I believe this link
has worked effectively as you can clearly see that it is the same
shot, which helps the audience link the two products together. As
it is the last shot on my film trailer, it is the shot that the audience
will remember, therefore having it on the film poster will make
them link the texts together.
Poster Trailer
7. Trailer
Poster
This shot of a hand against a door
links to the bloody handprint on my
poster. This re-occurring hand
symbolises the fact that as hard as
Olivia tries she cannot quite reach her
stepfather in order to get revenge on
him. It signifies her attempts to get to
him, however the fact that in both
shots there are panes of glass
between the hand and the camera
represent that something is always
standing in her way.
9. Why is the hot air balloon moving by
itself?
Why is Olivia angry/upset?
Who is this man, why has the woman
been killed and why?
Why is Olivia crossing out a man’s
picture?
10. What is the girl looking at and why
does she look distressed?
Where has the blood come from?
Whose body is this?
11. In conclusion
I believe that I successfully combined my
ancillary tasks with my main product, and
that because of my matching colour
schemes, fonts, key images and lighting
choices it would be easy for an audience
to identify that they are all based on the
same film.
