This is the 5th in our weekly series overviewing the different grades of titanium. Ti-6Al-4V or Titanium Grade 5 is hands down the most utilized alloy of titanium world wide. Over fifty percent of the worlds usage of titanium consists of Ti 5. In this presentation, you will learn about the applications of Ti5 (and titanium) as well as the different product forms it commonly comes in and given resources on where to buy titanium or learn more about this amazing metal.
Take a look and share if you like what you see!
2. Properties of Ti-6Al-4V
Ti Grade 5 is one of the most commonly used
alloys.
It’s high strength and ability to be welded and
treated at high temps (400 – 600 degrees Celsius).
Because of these capabilities it has been dubbed
the workhorse of the Aerospace industry.
It also is used in several other high strength
performance applications.
3. Common Ti Applications
There are many
applications for
Titanium because of its
special properties. Some
of the more high strength,
high heat, and overly
moist atmospheres are
the best for this amazing
metal.
It is also non toxic which
has given the medical
field a huge advantage.
4. Applications
Being the workhorse of the
Aerospace industry, Titanium Alloy
Grade 5 has also been extensively
tested and utilized in other areas
related to the military.
Some of it’s important applications
are in safety, like ballistic armor, or
high thrust to weight situations like
gas turbine engines as well as other
aircraft structural components.
Ti-6Al-4V has also been used in
marine applications and as well as
sports equipment and medical
industries.
5. Property Ratings and Comparisons
Ti-6Al-4V or Titanium Alloy Grade 5 has well overdone many other grades of
titanium in terms of use. Being the most common alloy, accounting for about
50% of the titanium usage the world over, its no wonder it has some of the most
useful properties across several industries.
Its excellent strength ratings make it a great candidate for applications like armor
and high speeds are factors. It also has great formability and is able to be used
at extremely high heats while keeping it’s strength. It also has some of the higher
marks in corrosion resistance which is crucial where medical and marine
applications are concerned.
6. Common Product Forms
Titanium Grade 5 can be purchased in several
different product forms. Some of the more
common forms include:
Titanium Bars Titanium Billets Titanium Plates
and Sheets
Titanium Pipes
and Tubes
7. Working with Titanium
There is very special machinery that needs to be used in
order to machine titanium. The tools will need to be given
extra care in order to preserve them appropriately due to
titanium’s low heat conducting capacities.

8. Conclusion
Titanium can be used across multiple industries
and it is always important to know which grade will
be best for a certain project.
