- 6. Blueberries are part of the genus Vaccinium. The main types of blueberries are highbush, lowbush, rabbiteye and half-high hybrid varieties. The most common blueberry for commercial cultivation is the (northern) highbush type. There are many varieties of blueberries each with their own characteristics in terms of size, growing season, flavour and cold hardiness. Other berries that are found within the genus Vaccinium are cranberries, cowberries and bilberries, a European variety that is similar to the blueberry.
