Argumentative Essay
To use or not to use, that is the question
In society, this younger generation is becoming more sexually active than the
previous ones. It that does not mean that providing these youths access to condoms
will lead teenagers to a bad behavior that is irresponsible and dangerous. On the
contrary, this access to condoms statistically prevents sexual transmitted diseases and
unplanned pregnancies, guiding the young people to make more responsible choices.
Masses with very strong moral or religious views automatically frown at the very
thought of sponsoring access to condoms. It is believed that human race must be
perpetuated, that using condoms promote a promiscuous behavior and that they
simply should not be used. These arguments are the strongest points that rise against
the conception that access to condoms is actually beneficial.
First of all, there is a moralist point of view. People that share this view might
say that the access to condoms is just like a courtesy ticket to sexual freedom for
teenagers. That it will lead straight to promiscuous behavior. It is well known that a
great percentage of teens nowadays become sexually active while in high school or
once they enter college. From this perspective, allowing access to condoms will
skyrocket these percentages. On the other hand, by giving some thought to the issue
and paying close attention to what is happening around, will result in the realization
that different types of media such as television, radio, magazines, and the internet are
the ones actually promoting sexual behavior. It is scientifically proven that teenagers,
as they are reaching adulthood, get stronger sexual urges, all part of hormonal
changes. So if we combine this biological process with its cultural effects, it is
society’s responsibility to encourage the government to enlarge the access to condoms

and create conscience in teens to engage safer sexual encounters by talking the
necessary measures to prevent pregnancies and sexual transmitted diseases.
Second, the religious perspective must be taken into consideration and its great
concerns for human reproduction. According to the leading and most conservative
religious doctrines, the access to condoms profanes their definition and purpose of
sex, marriage, and role of humans on Earth. This statement is very reasonable and
comprehensible in an Orthodox Catholic environment, but does not quiet
accommodate to current society. In fact, in a book released on November of 2010
entitled Light of the World: The Pope, the Church and the Signs of the Times, Pope
Benedict XVI commented about the use of condoms by saying: “... It's the first step of
taking responsibility, of taking into consideration the risk of the life of another with
whom you have a relationship.”. This acceptance from the Pope to the use of condoms
in exceptional circumstances such as male prostitution caused a commotion among
the religious, and by any means intended to shift the Catholic Church’s view against
condoms. This statement from the Pope reaffirmed from a religious and conservative
point of view that the access to condoms plays a leading role in taking self
responsibility and that of the sexual partner.
Overall, there is a great diversity of points against and in favor to the access to
condoms. After contemplating the most socially relevant ones, it can be stated that
this access does not lead to a dangerous and irresponsible behavior. Opposite of what
specific sectors of society negatively spread about the access to condoms, these are
proven to be a key factor in protecting teens and making them take responsibility.
Responsibility, Pope Benedict XVI’s concern, is one of the biggest supports to the
fact that the access to condoms does not lead to a bad behavior.
In conclusion, allowing access to condoms will open the gate for teens to

choose protected, responsible sexual encounters. When a teenager chooses to wear a
condom, it is also choosing to prevent a pregnancy and the transmition of aids and
other sexual transmitted diseases. Not providing teens the access to condoms by
shielding behind a load of moral and religious concerns it is merely blindfolding
ourselves. It is well known that millions of teenagers are engaging in a risky sexual
behavior, so providing teens with condoms turns that behavior into a safer, more
protected sexual encounter. This provision is not an acceptance speech from society to
have casual, random sex; instead, it is a way of encouraging teens to take the
precautions needed to keep safety as a main priority and most importantly, to be
responsible.
