FOXO1A or Forkhead Box Protein O1 is a transcription factor which plays a role in metabolic homeostasis. When the body is in starvation mode, FOXO1A is un-phosphorylated and localized to the nucleus, where it binds to the insulin response sequence located in the promoter for glucose 6-phosphatase and increases its rate of transcription, thus promoting gluconeogenesis. However, when blood-sugar levels are high, insulin is released by the pancreas which activates the cell's insulin signalling pathway, ultimately causing FOXO1A to become phosphorylated, where it translocates from the nucleus and to be degraded.
