The province of Alberta was named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, who was Queen Victoria's daughter. She married John Campbell, the Governor of Canada, in 1871 and moved with him to Ottawa. When a new province was formed in western Canada in 1905, the Governor chose to name it after his wife, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta. Thus, the province of Alberta commemorates the princess for whom it is named.
