Clara Elizabeth Jane Peacock was born in 1854 in England and immigrated to Utah in 1866 with her family. She worked as a teacher at St. Mark's Episcopal school and later became a successful businesswoman working for Walker Brothers Dry Goods company. She traveled extensively in her later years. She married Ebenezer Watson in 1875 and they had two children, though her husband and one child passed away in 1891. Clara lived a long life, passing away in 1935 in Salt Lake City at the age of 81.

Watford is a town and district in Hertfordshire, England situated 21 miles northwest of London. The
borough lies just to the north of Greater London.
Watford remained an agricultural community with some cottage industry for many centuries. The
Industrial Revolution brought the Grand Junction Canal in 1798 and the London and Birmingham
Railway in 1837, both located here for the same reasons the road had followed centuries before, seeking
an easy gradient over the Chiltern Hills. By mid 1800’s Watford was a fairly cosmopolitan town.

Possessed a love for music and a strong desire for education, she entered St Mark’s school in 1874, where
she worked her way through, later teaching at the school in association with Miss Joan H. Van Rensaeler
and Rev. G.D.B. Miller, Episcopal bishop and principal of the school. A number of prominent men and
women of the city today were pupils of Mrs. Watson.
St. Mark's School, which was founded in Salt Lake City by Episcopal Bishop Daniel Sylvester Tuttle in
1867. St. Mark's School was closed in the early 1890s. However its sister school, Rowland Hall, remained
open.

4. Abt 1875, She married E.J. Watson, mining engineer and one of the discoverers of the Utah mine at Fish
Springs. He was killed accidentally in 1891 at Point Lookout, near Vernon on the Old Overland Trail.
The same year, 1891, she lost her mother (Phyllis Hyom Peacock), a brother (Alfred James Peacock) and
a daughter (Sella Irena Watson).
Undismayed, she became associated with the Walker Brothers Dry Goods Company and became a
successful business woman, winning many friends in her new position.

Private funeral services for Mrs. Clara E Watson, 78,
former teacher at the old St. Mark’s Episcopal school,
Salt Lake City, and employed for 18 years by the
Walker Brothers Dry Goods company, will be
conducted Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at the White Chapel
Mortuary by Bishop June B. Sharp of the Thirty first
L.D.S. ward.
Mrs. Watson died Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at her home,
1033 Lake Street of ailments incident to age.
She was born July 19, 1856 in England. With her
parents, William and Phyllis Peacock she emigrated
to Utah in 1866, locating at Smithfield.
