1. The responsibilities of a sound designer
Within the responsibilities of the sound designer is the job of working with the
other areas of the production team, the designer mustdiscuss whatsounds are
appropriatefor the imagery being created by
the visualdesign team. They mustalso work
with the actors and directors to create the
correctsounds for the actions being conveyed.
In order to create the sounds the designer must
obtain the correctequipment. If the designer is
creating the sounds through Foley artistry they
will need to sourcethe correctprops for the
sound required, for example if they needed to create the sound of footsteps
they need to acquire shoes and a floor surface. Becausethis
method is carried out in a recording studio it is a much more
controlled process and the sounds created can be recorded
much moreclearly. In order to record more natural
environmental sound field recording is used. In this method,
it is the designers’ responsibility to bring the correctportable
equipment to achieve the bestsound quality. For example if
the sound of a car is needed the sound designer is
responsibleto find the correctsound to use.
In order to achieve the best sound quality it is
the responsibility of the sound designer to
maintain and manage the sound equipment.
This does not justmean maintaining the
hardwarebut also keeping up to date with
developments in hardwareand software
which could improve sound quality. Once the
sound designer has recorded the required
sound using the mostappropriatehardware, it is then important that the
sound designer edits the assets of the sounds and sequences them correctly in
the soundtrack. In order to do this it is the responsibility of the sound designer
to understand how to use the software.
