15.50 Distribution Planning in the era of Smart Grid - The position of
CIGRE
•The planning process at present hinges very strongly on
data related to customers usage and city planning to form
accurate load forecasts, which is the main input into the
technical planning portion of the study.
•Little or no consideration is given to distributed generation
or demand side integration in the development of these
forecasts and distribution.
•While of interest to many utilities, demand-side integration
and active distribution network concepts fail to be seriously
taken by utilities as viable alternatives in the planning
process.
•The most suitable planning methods and potential tools
that could ensure the transition to future distribution
networks overcoming the inadequacies and shortcomings
of current practices will be identified with practical
examples

  • 4. POST-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP Wednesday 1st October 2014 8.30am - 12.30pm Holiday Inn Regents Park Hotel, London, UK From Big Data to Smart Data - Using signal, image and statistical processing techniques to extract value from Smart Grid and Smart Metering data Hosted by Furong Li, EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow, University of Bath Overview: The workshop aims to provide broad understanding of key issues in big data processing, particularly for the purpose of extracting value and knowledge from big smart grid and smart metering data. This workshop gives in-depth introduction to big data processing techniques, their key principles and differences in extracting features/values in time domain and/or frequency domains, and their applications to customer/network classification, data reduction, phase identification and correlations with internal and external factors (such as weather) in power and other industries. Agenda: 8.30 Registration and Coffee 9.00 Big Data analyses requirements •Where data comes from •What value we hope to extract from smart grid and smart metering data 9.40 Recognition and classification case-studies in the power and other industries •Statistical clustering and scaling techniques to load profiling - WPD Low Voltage Network Templates •Signal processing techniques for spectral analyses of load profiles – extracting load features in frequency domain •Image processing techniques for recognition and classification for faces and remote sensing 10.30 Networking Break 11.00 What data mining techniques are out there to extract features from big data •Where do we go next? 12.00 Group discussions on wider applications to power industry 12.30 End of Workshop About the workshop host: Professor Li is a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Fellow (2013-2018), and was an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow (2006-2011). She has expertise in smart grid planning, operation and pricing, and value analyses of network flexibility, energy storage and demand response. She has undertaken research and consultancies for DECC, Ofgem, NPower, Centric, Wessex Water, Areva, and the UK’s transmission and distribution licensees. She chairs the International Working Group for Distribution Pricing and Tariffs (USA), and is an executive member of the IET Power Trading and Control network (UK).
