In this presentation, I am teaching Lesson 11 of the Mission Preparation class from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to my teenage kids. The lesson is called “Teaching the Plan of Salvation (Part 2)” and discusses how the atonement of Jesus Christ overcomes the effects of physical death and spiritual death (sin). The lesson also provides an overview of our eternal progression and the three degrees of glory.

• Elder Bruce R. McConkie taught that John 3:16 “is
perhaps the most famous and powerful single verse of
scripture ever uttered. It summarizes the whole plan of
salvation, tying together the Father, the Son, his atoning
sacrifice, that belief in him which presupposes righteous
works, and ultimate eternal exaltation for the faithful”
(Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, 1:144).
• “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should
not perish, but have everlasting life.”
• How does John 3:16 summarize the whole plan of
salvation?

Importance of the Atoning
Sacrifice of Jesus Christ
• “Before the world was organized, our Heavenly
Father chose Jesus Christ to be our Savior and
Redeemer. The atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ made
it possible for us to overcome the effects of the Fall.
All of the prophets since the world began have
testified of Jesus Christ as our Redeemer.” (PMG)
• How would you state, in a single
sentence, why the atoning sacrifice
of Jesus Christ is so important?

Effects of the Fall: Suffering and
Death (Physical and Spiritual)
Physical death =
separation of the
individual’s body from
their spirit.
Spiritual death =
separation of a person
from God because of
their sins.

How the Atonement of Christ
Overcomes Physical Death
• “The reuniting of body and spirit is called resurrection and is a
gift promised to each of us. Because of the Resurrection of
Jesus Christ, we will all be resurrected regardless of whether
we have done good or evil in this life. We will have a perfect,
immortal body of flesh and bones that will never again be
subject to disease, pain, or death.” (PMG)
• “Since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection
of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all
be made alive.” (1 Cor 15:20–22)

How the Atonement of Christ
Overcomes Physical Death
• Alma 11:42 “There is a death which is called a temporal
death; and the death of Christ shall loose the bands of
this temporal death, that all shall be raised from this
temporal death….
• 44) Now, this restoration shall come to all, both old and
young, both bond and free, both male and female, both
the wicked and the righteous; and even there shall not so
much as a hair of their heads be lost; but every thing
shall be restored to its perfect frame…
• 45) Also concerning the resurrection of the mortal body. I
say unto you that this mortal body is raised to an
immortal body, that is from death, even from the first
death unto life, that they can die no more; their spirits
uniting with their bodies, never to be divided; thus the
whole becoming spiritual and immortal, that they can no
more see corruption.”

How the Atonement of Christ
Overcomes Sin / Spiritual Death
• “The Resurrection makes it possible to
return to God’s presence to be judged but
does not guarantee that we will be able to
live in His presence. To receive that
blessing, we must also be cleansed from
sin.” (PMG)
• Alma 34:8–9 “Christ shall come among the
children of men, to take upon him the
transgressions of his people, and that he
shall atone for the sins of the world; for the
Lord God hath spoken it. For it is expedient
that an atonement should be made; for
according to the great plan of the Eternal
God there must be an atonement made, or
else all mankind must unavoidably perish;
yea, all are hardened; yea, all are fallen and
are lost, and must perish except it be
through the atonement.”

Christ Suffered for our Sins, so we
Would Not Suffer, if we Repent
• D&C 19:15–19 “I command you to repent—repent, lest I smite you
by the rod of my mouth, and by my wrath, and by my anger, and your
sufferings be sore—how sore you know not, how exquisite you know
not, yea, how hard to bear you know not. For behold, I, God, have
suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would
repent; But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I;
Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to
tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer
both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter
cup, and shrink—Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook.”

How the Atonement of Christ
Overcomes Sin / Spiritual Death
• “To fulfill the plan of salvation,
Christ paid the penalty for our
sins. He alone was able to do
that…He submitted to the
Father’s will in a supreme
expression of love for His
Father and for us. This triumph
of Jesus Christ over spiritual
death by His suffering and over
physical death by His
Resurrection is called the
Atonement of Jesus Christ.”

Additionally, Atonement of Christ
Overcomes Suffering and Sorrow
• “As we rely on the Atonement of Jesus
Christ, He can help us endure our
trials, sicknesses, and pain. We can be
filled with joy, peace, and consolation.
All that is unfair about life can be
made right through the Atonement of
Jesus Christ.” (PMG)
• Isaiah taught: “Surely he hath borne
our griefs, and carried our sorrows:
yet we did esteem him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted.”
• “But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for our
iniquities: the chastisement of our
peace was upon him; and with his
stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:4–5)

• “And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and
temptations of every kind; and this that the word might
be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains
and the sicknesses of his people.”
• “And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the
bands of death which bind his people; and he will take

• During his pre-mortal ministry?
• During his mortal ministry?
• During his post-mortal ministry?
• Why should missionaries regularly share their
testimony of Jesus Christ with those they teach?
• How would you testify to an investigator of the

Diagrams and Illustrations
• Missionaries should be able to explain the main elements
of the plan of salvation
• Diagrams, like this one from the manual, are common
• There is no right or wrong way to illustrate the plan
• Important thing is to include major parts…Premortal
life, Earth, Spirit World, Resurrection, Judgment, and

The Spirit World
• “Death is part of the process by which we are transformed
from mortality to immortality. At death our spirits go to the
spirit world. …Those who chose to obey God in this life live in
a state of happiness, peace, and rest from troubles and care.
Those who chose not to obey in this life and did not repent
live in a state of unhappiness. …We remain in the spirit world
until we are resurrected.” (PMG)

The Spirit World
• “Behold, it has been made
known unto me by an angel,
that the spirits of all men, as
soon as they are departed from
this mortal body, yea, the spirits
of all men, whether they be
good or evil, are taken home to
that God who gave them life.”
• “And then shall it come to pass,
that the spirits of those who are
righteous are received into a
state of happiness, which is
called paradise, a state of rest, a
state of peace, where they shall
rest from all their troubles and
from all care, and sorrow.”
• Alma 40: 11-12
Spirit Paradise Spirit Prison
• “The spirits of the wicked, yea,
who are evil—for behold, they
have no part nor portion of the
Spirit of the Lord; for behold,
they chose evil works rather
than good; therefore the spirit
of the devil did enter into them,
and take possession of their
house—and these shall be cast
out”
• “Now this is the state of the
souls of the wicked, yea, in
darkness, and a state of awful,
fearful looking for the fiery
indignation of the wrath of God
upon them; thus they remain in
this state, as well as the
righteous in paradise, until the
time of their resurrection.”

Resurrection
• “And mercy cometh because of the atonement; and the
atonement bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead;
and the resurrection of the dead bringeth back men into
the presence of God; and thus they are restored into his
presence, to be judged according to their works,
according to the law and justice.” (Alma 42:23)

All Will Be Resurrected
• “The spirit and the body is restored to itself again,
and all men become incorruptible, and immortal, and
they are living souls, having a perfect knowledge like
unto us in the flesh, save it be that our knowledge
shall be perfect. Wherefore, we shall have a perfect
knowledge of all our guilt, and our uncleanness, and
our nakedness; and the righteous shall have a perfect
knowledge of their enjoyment, and their
righteousness.” (2 Ne 9:13-14)

Judgement
• Alma taught we will be judged for our thoughts, beliefs, words, and
works
• “And Amulek hath spoken plainly concerning death, and being
raised from this mortality to a state of immortality, and being
brought before the bar of God, to be judged according to our
works.” (Alma 12:12)

according to the desire of their hearts.” (D&C 137:9)

Judgement:
Self Examination Questions from Alma
• “Do you look forward with an eye of faith, and view this
mortal body raised in immortality, and this corruption raised
in incorruption, to stand before God to be judged according to
the deeds which have been done in the mortal body?
• …Can ye imagine yourselves brought before the tribunal of
God with your souls filled with guilt and remorse, having a
remembrance of all your guilt, yea, a perfect remembrance of
all your wickedness, yea, a remembrance that ye have set at
defiance the commandments of God?
• I say unto you, can ye look up to God at that day with a pure
heart and clean hands? I say unto you, can you look up, having
the image of God engraven upon your countenances?
• …There can no man be saved except his garments are washed
white; yea, his garments must be purified until they are
cleansed from all stain, through the blood of him of whom it
has been spoken by our fathers, who should come to redeem
his people from their sins.” (Alma Chapter 5: 15, 18, 19, 21)

Kingdoms of Glory
• Because God rewards everyone according to their desires and
their deeds done on earth, there are different kingdoms of
glory to which we may be assigned after the Judgment.
• “There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon,
and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from
another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead.”

Telestial Kingdom
• D&C 76
• 81 And again, we saw the glory of the telestial, which glory is that of the lesser,
even as the glory of the stars differs from that of the glory of the moon in the
firmament.
• 82 These are they who received not the gospel of Christ, neither the testimony of
Jesus.
• 85 These are they who shall not be redeemed from the devil until the last
resurrection, until the Lord, even Christ the Lamb, shall have finished his work.

Inhabitants of the Terrestrial
Kingdom
• D&C 76: 73 And also they who are the spirits of men kept in prison,
whom the Son visited, and preached the gospel unto them, that
they might be judged according to men in the flesh;
• 74 Who received not the testimony of Jesus in the flesh, but
afterwards received it.
• 75 These are they who are honorable men of the earth, who were
blinded by the craftiness of men.
• 76 These are they who receive of his glory, but not of his fulness.
• 77 These are they who receive of the presence of the Son, but not
of the fulness of the Father.
• 78 Wherefore, they are bodies terrestrial, and not bodies celestial,
and differ in glory as the moon differs from the sun.
• 79 These are they who are not valiant in the testimony of Jesus;
wherefore, they obtain not the crown over the kingdom of our God.

Description of Inhabitants of the
Celestial Kingdom
• D&C 76: 51 They are they who received the testimony of Jesus, and
believed on his name and were baptized after the manner of his burial
• 52 That by keeping the commandments they might be washed and
cleansed from all their sins, and receive the Holy Spirit
• 53 And who overcome by faith, and are sealed by the Holy Spirit of
promise.
• 55 They are they into whose hands the Father has given all things—
• 56 They are they who are priests and kings, who have received of his
fulness
• 58 Wherefore, as it is written, they are gods, even the sons of God—
• 59 Wherefore, all things are theirs, whether life or death, or things
present, or things to come, all are theirs and they are Christ’s, and Christ is
God’s.
• 62 These shall dwell in the presence of God and his Christ forever and ever.
• 64 These are they who shall have part in the first resurrection.
• 69 These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the
mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement
through the shedding of his own blood.

Questions to Discuss / Ponder
• What impact will our decisions here on earth have on
our life after we die?
• How can our understanding of the Judgement affect
our decisions now?
• How does the Atonement of Jesus Christ affect each
phase of our existence (premortal, mortal, and
postmortal)?
• Why is it important to be clear and simple when
teaching these truths to others?

Become like God—Exaltation—Is The
Potential All God’s Children Have
• President Nelson taught, “To be exalted—or to gain
exaltation—refers to the highest state of happiness
and glory in the celestial realm.” (Apr 2008 Gen Conf)
• Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can
progress and receive the blessing of exaltation
• Even though we may one day become like God, we
will always worship Him as our Father and our God
