Artist/Band: The Killers
Title of Song: Mr Brightside
Genre: Pop & Rock
There are two versions of this video, but I decided to look at the version which is performance based. We
can tell this, because the band are singing on stage and playing instruments.
The plot outline is very simple. It is basically the band performing the song, with sections inbetween of a
girl (presumably the love interest of the lyrics) on old fashioned film roll shots. It looks as though the lead
singer, is singing it about/to her.
This is the 2nd song off the Killers first album. It is the still the same in the fact that it is performance based.
However this video seems more mature with more emotion. There image is still quite smart looking, but
they are all wearing black and white this time. This video is also in black and white, and shot on stage,
unlike the first video which was shot in a desert.
The technologies used: A few cameras – most likely hand held, or on a dolly, as they are mostly, close up
shots, simple but effective. The lighting is more advanced, there is no natural lights, but there is stage
lighting, soft box lighting, 3 point lighting, contrast lighting, etc.
Star/Artist:
The image of the band projected in this video seems quite vulnerable and volatile. We can tell this by the
way the lead singer acts in his stage presence, which appears quite cocky, but his face looks distraught and
pained. He looks off into the distance a lot, and the camera dollys out a lot, almost as if he is pushing it
away. The video is quite youthful, as the band look quite fresh faced (again keeping in line with the
vulnerability). It is quite simply, that they are singing about love, with a lot of thought and emotion put into
it, - along with that and being in black and white, with other effects, makes it work well.
I think that the record company is trying to sell the band as heartfelt, and again vunerable.
There are quite a few recurring elements in this video: the girl projected on the film roll which could reflect
that they are thinking about her,
